Hailing from Japan, student Aine Kanamaru and teacher Motoko Omori. nglish as a Second Language or ESL prepares students who have just arrived in the country for regular stateside classes. The program con- sists of students from grades 6-12. The students are from sixteen to eighteen different nationalities, and the length of time each student attends this class varies. Some at- tend for five years while some join regular classes after two or three semesters of special help. Many of the students attend regular classes like algebra, geome- try, history, and biology dur- ing the day. Many attend tech classes. The curriculum Speakers of Gujurati: Savita Patel, Yimal Patel, Mina Patel, Left. Speakers of Spanish: José Alvarado, El Salvador; Yomarys Castro, Puerto Rico; Raphael Oviedo, El Salvador, Below. ig Learning The Lingo for ESL is language and cul- ture to prepare the students for life in the U.S. The most striking prob- lem facing the ESL program is that each student has a different attitude toward education. In some cultures it is considered rude to ask questions in class. Accord- ing to the teachers, it is often difficult teaching students of various cultures and cus- toms, but it is always re- warding. Many modern lan- guage students became in- volved as pen pals with the ESL students which helped all who participated learn more about each other.

I think I broke my thumb. Since when did they start making two ton hammers? This float is taking up all of my free time. All we’re going to do is drive it around the track one time or maybe twice. What’s the use? Well, if one person gets the mes- sage, I guess a mangled thumb will be worth it. I just hope the school gets the message: Drink- ing and Driving have never mixed. SADD members took sec- ond place in the club division. Service clubs, Bird Aid, Park- ing Crew, SADD and Key Club work throughout the year to make all the activities from foot- ball in the fall through graduation in the spring run more smoothly. In the case of a fire, call Bird Aid for help in getting the necessities supplied. The club collects and ee ee Needs distributes food for needy fam- ilies in the community. SADD members encourage people to forget about drinking especially when driving. Key Club mem- bers boast a record breaking year collecting blood for Bird alumni, Ronald Parker who was hospitalized after a motorcycle accident. The family atmosphere and caring at Bird came through again.
