With the girls taking third and the guys finishing fifth, it looked like it would be a winning season. Al- though at the end of the season the guys’ record was 4-3 and the girls’ was 2-4, both teams quali- fied for the Regional meet and the girls finished a respective sixth in the region. District and Regional places were taken by Jason Fe- lice, Christy Hammer, and Lisa Light, all of whom qualified for the AAA State Cross Country 2 Championships. There were six school records, lots of personal bests, and five athletes qualified for the Indoor State meet. MVP Karen DiSavino claimed three school records her- self in the long, triple, and high jumps. The mile relay team of D ebbie Sharkey, Colleen McDowell, Angel Ingalls, and Ka- ren DiSavino picked up the fourth record. Senior Jason Fe- lice and Angel Ingalls captured the other two in the mile and the shot put, respectively. MVP Mike Wall represented Bird in the 55 high hurdles, triple jump, and pole vault. Confidence, howev- er, was severely test- ed as the team dropped the next two games before scoring a win over Huguenot. The test was on again with two losses before the next victory over Manchester. With confidence restored, the entire team played an outstand- ing game in defeat- ing a strong Mono- can team 20-0. De- fensive stars, Ryan Sharkey, Daryl Thompson and Tim Wade teamed with outstanding offen- sive players, Bryan Leslie, Jammie Brown, Kevin Brown, David King and David Mayfield to show the skill that the young team had worked the entire season to perfect. Earning his rep as a defensive star, Darryl Thompson moves in to pro- tect his quarterback.
