All Study ... Psyche! Latin Club gives Latin students the chance to socialize with each other and to realize that it is great — not weird — to enjoy language study. Competition is another strong draw to this club. At state and national conventions Bird students enjoy the chance to compete with peers throughout the country. In Norfolk, the state cite this year, club members partici- pated in academic, oratory and costume contests as well as class project competi- tion. Members brought home over fifty awards. President, Lorrie Andrew; Vice- President, Jack Goodpasture; Secretary, Denise Biggs; Treasurer, Ray Cash; and Head of Publicity, Jenny Holdorff; planned the fund raiser, candy sales, in or- der to help defray convention expenses. Club members went dramatic with The Menaechmi by Plautus. This English com- edy was open to the entire county. Mem- bers designed and made a colorful banner which has the ‘Alma Mater’ imprinted. The banner now adorns the gym. All activi- ties have as a goal, the promotion of the study of the language. A Glimpse at Foreign Affairs On the world scene, French, German and Span- ish Club members have an active schedule. Visits to local restaurants along with picnics, skating parties, Christmas parties and visits from ex- change students may be just part of the calendar. Fund raising serves an important purpose for these clubs. The money earned goes into the spon- sorship of their respective honor societies to rec- ognize outstanding language achievement. Foreign Language Week takes work in the plan- ning but pays off in fun for all. Dress up in togas or sport the buttons of languages studied on dress up days. Language sweat shirts add to the spirit. Class and club members gather on the volleyball courts for hot competition with each language giv- ing its best shot. Open to the entire school, the trivia contest paid off in big bucks for paying at- tention and for knowing those languages. Homecoming’ ’87 was one for the languages. French Club’s ’Le Cage Aux Folle’ took first place, with Spanish Club’s “The Impossible Dream’ in second. GERMAN Front: Sue Hantwerker, Amy Nilsen, Laura Hamm, Jennifer Ambs.
