Foreword As the history of the past two decades unfolded, a generation emerged — our genera- tion. Born amidst the anger of the 1960’s, we learned to survive. We were influenced ‘in ear- ly years by men such as John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr; we gained even deeper insight when each fell at the hands of assas- sins. When we started school, a war no one could understand was being fought on the other side of the world and yet it seemed to be forgotten — for a while anyway — when Neil Armstrong took his ‘giant leap for mankind.” The decade of the 1970’s rolled around and with it came political corruption. We saw the first resignation ever of a President of the Unit- ed States. The Vietnam conflict finally ended — without the smell of victory — and encouraged us to strive for international peace. Then came economic problems on the home front—we learned the definition of “inflation.” But we have made it, we have survived; “That was then, this is now.’’Transforming hostility into creative energy, we attempted the impossi- ble — and succeeded. We became responsible citizens, eager to play the ‘game of life’. The 1980 TALON reflects on the events that molded our character. As David Neel (left) has grown and changed through the 60’s and 70,’s so have we all. Seniors as well as some teach- ers can be seen—as we were-— pictured throughout the book. Triumph and Tragedy The 1960’s began and ended with hope, but in between were displays of violence that still re- main unequaled. In 1960 the na- tion elected its youngest presi- dent, John F. Kennedy, with the promise of a ‘New Frontier.” But it was the decade of the as- sassin— John Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Robert Ken- nedy all paid the price. Lyndon B. Johnson was hastily sworn in aboard Air Force 1 in 1963 and the U.S. was soon in the middle of the controversial conflict in Vietnam. National attention shift- ed from thoughts of tragedy to visions of triumph when, In 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin first stepped into the “New Frontier.” sfa flashback ‘60's 5
