BIRD HIGH SCHOOL Congratulations on your graduation. | am pleased to have been asked to join your relatives and friends in celebrating with you this important occasion in your fives. Only a few decades ago, going to high school and earning a diploma were prized objectives that many people only dreamed about -- if not for themselves at least for their children. Today, most of us take a high school education for granted since it is within reach of anyone who wants one and is willing to work for it. With notable exceptions, this is true. Our country has made significant progress in providing opportunities for all our young people to acquire the skills and training which will enable them to further their development on their own, to pursue careers and to become productive members of society -- either following high school graduation or after further schooling. Your graduation marks a milestone, therefore, in regard to public expectation, Although you will continue to learn on your job or in another school, you are now presumed to be prepared to make a living and to assume responsibility for yourselves. Your graduation marks formal entry into the adult society with its characteristic privileges and corresponding obligations. As you pursue your own personal goals, | hope you will always reflect that it is up to you to help make your community, your country and the world a better place for the next generation.
