Triumph and Tragedy The 1960’s began and ended with hope, but in between were displays of violence that still re- main unequaled. In 1960 the na- tion elected its youngest presi- dent, John F. Kennedy, with the promise of a ‘New Frontier.” But it was the decade of the as- sassin— John Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Robert Ken- nedy all paid the price. Lyndon B. Johnson was hastily sworn in aboard Air Force 1 in 1963 and the U.S. was soon in the middle of the controversial conflict in Vietnam. Rock and Rebellion During the 1960’s the emphasis was On communication, be it through music, fashion, or sports. Rock music changed with the Beatles invasion in 1964 and climaxed at Woodstock in 1969. Fashions were as unique as the decade itself when Twiggy intro- duced the miniskirt.
