A TALON WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF LLOYD C. BIRD 40304 Courthouse Road Chesterfield, Virginia NOLLOL?720 title 1 LOO LE IER To mem ee ed PR util 2 introduction Foreword As the history of the past two decades unfolded, a generation emerged — our genera- tion. Born amidst the anger of the 1960’s, we learned to survive. We were influenced ‘in ear- ly years by men such as John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr; we gained even deeper insight when each fell at the hands of assas- sins. When we started school, a war no one could understand was being fought on the other side of the world and yet it seemed to be forgotten — for a while anyway — when Neil Armstrong took his ‘giant leap for mankind.” The decade of the 1970’s rolled around and with it came political corruption. We saw the first resignation ever of a President of the Unit- ed States. The Vietnam conflict finally ended — without the smell of victory — and encouraged us to strive for international peace. Then came economic problems on the home front—we learned the definition of “inflation.” But we have made it, we have survived; “That was then, this is now.’’Transforming hostility into creative energy, we attempted the impossi- ble — and succeeded. We became responsible citizens, eager to play the ‘game of life’. The 1980 TALON reflects on the events that molded our character. As David Neel (left) has grown and changed through the 60’s and 70,’s so have we all. Seniors as well as some teach- ers can be seen—as we were-— pictured throughout the book. MAT N LUTHER KING JR. a (9 29 1968 4 flashback ’60’s Triumph and Tragedy The 1960’s began and ended with hope, but in between were displays of violence that still re- main unequaled. In 1960 the na- tion elected its youngest presi- dent, John F. Kennedy, with the promise of a ‘New Frontier.” But it was the decade of the as- sassin— John Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Robert Ken- nedy all paid the price. Lyndon B. Johnson was hastily sworn in aboard Air Force 1 in 1963 and the U.S. was soon in the middle of the controversial conflict in Vietnam. National attention shift- ed from thoughts of tragedy to visions of triumph when, In 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin first stepped into the “New Frontier.” sfa flashback ‘60's 5 wend, MICE 6 flashback ‘60's Rock and Rebellion During the 1960’s the emphasis was On communication, be it through music, fashion, or sports. Rock music changed with the Beatles invasion in 1964 and climaxed at Woodstock in 1969. Fashions were as unique as the decade itself when Twiggy intro- duced the miniskirt. For athletes it was the era of the under- dog—Joe Namath led his New York Jets to victory in Super Bowl Ill and Wilma Rudolph sprinted her way to three gold medals in the 1960 Rome Olym- DiGSmaasidam flashback ‘60's 7 8 flashback ’70’s Disgrace and Disappointment Watergate caused Americans to become disillusioned with poli- tics in the 1970's. In 1974 Rich- ard Nixon became the first presi- dent to resign. Gerald Ford spent his term trying to restore faith in government and lost in 1976 to Jimmy Carter. Patricia Hearst was kidnapped by the SLA and the cry of “no nukes’ rang from coast to coast follow- ing an accident at Three Mile Is- land. As the decade drew to a close, 50 Americans were being held hostage by Iranian militants. KK Cf aK flashback ‘70's 9 = SIS come ATUR DAYNIGH Ip ve 10 flashback ‘70's Attempt and Achievement The 1970’s was the decade of achieving the impossible. Mark Spitz won a record seven gold medals at the tragic 1972 Mu- nich Olympics and Bruce Jenner dazzled us at Montreal in 1976. Evel Knievel attempted to jump the treacherous Snake River Canyon in his custom-made rocket. Movies provided two means of escape—disco fever swept the country with the gy- rations of John Travolta in “Sat- urday Night Fever’ and interest in science fiction was regenerat- ed with the likes of “Star Wars.” KK fq flashback ‘70's 11 TOP BIRDS GAN? Although road trips were long and hard, the girls still had enough in them to show their opponents what a tough team they are. Sticking to their motto, “We Are Family”, the girls worked together making a strong bond that could NOT be broken. With every team member playing well, three awards were given for best offensive players, best defen- sive player and 110% during each game. The winner of one of the awards wore a skyhawk necklace. This brought encouragement to the team and helped lead the girls through a tough but victorious sea- son. BIRD HIGH SCHOOL Congratulations on your graduation. | am pleased to have been asked to join your relatives and friends in celebrating with you this important occasion in your fives. Only a few decades ago, going to high school and earning a diploma were prized objectives that many people only dreamed about -- if not for themselves at least for their children. Today, most of us take a high school education for granted since it is within reach of anyone who wants one and is willing to work for it. With notable exceptions, this is true. Our country has made significant progress in providing opportunities for all our young people to acquire the skills and training which will enable them to further their development on their own, to pursue careers and to become productive members of society -- either following high school graduation or after further schooling. Your graduation marks a milestone, therefore, in regard to public expectation, Although you will continue to learn on your job or in another school, you are now presumed to be prepared to make a living and to assume responsibility for yourselves. Your graduation marks formal entry into the adult society with its characteristic privileges and corresponding obligations. As you pursue your own personal goals, | hope you will always reflect that it is up to you to help make your community, your country and the world a better place for the next generation. Rosalynn joins me in applauding your achievements and in sending best wishes to each of you. ee 208 message to seniors 4.7 | t
