Skyhawks’ captains Earl and Burrell Fisher were featured in local newspaper—articles not only because of their skillful leadership on the field but because it is rumored that they look alike. Ae fe Skyhawk fans enjoyed exciting, action-packed games. 65 Finishing the first season with a record of 5-3, Skyhawks did not let the fact that there were no seniors on the team affect their ability to win. The first and only game of the season played on L.C. Bird’s home turf against Matoaca ended in Sky- haw victory 12-7, topping off the winning season. Backed by his teammates, Rick Cratch pitched 1 no-hitter and ended with a personal record of 9 wins and 1 loss and an ERA of 0.59. The Skyhawks placed Cratch and second baseman Ron- nie White on the All-Southside District first team, while outfielder Greg Edmonds was chosen for the second team. In the high hurdles, Linwood Carroll smokes his competition. 95 Spring Track Teams The girls and boys were both successful in track. The girls went undefeated for the regular season, finished first in the district, and third in the region. Cherri Taylor, Lisa Friend, Karen West, Mary Taylor and Shelley Beavers repre- sented Bird in the girls state AA meet with West finishing third in the 880 yard run. The boys had a regular season record of 9-2-1, finished third in the district and third in the region. Jake Clarke, Linwood Carroll, Steve Freed, Trevor and Travis Wright went to the boys state AA meet from Bird.
