How can success fail to come to a race of masterful energy and resoluteness which has a continent for the base of its domain and which feels within its veins the thrill that comes to generous souls when their strength stirs in them, and they know that the future is theirs? -4 : 1 ■ Livingstone College Historical And Descriptive Livingstone College, located in Salisbury, North Carolina, is an institution of higher learning and it is chartered by the state of North Carolina. Incorporated in 1879, its first sessions were held in 1880 in a room of the parsonage of the late Bishop C. R. Harris, who was then a minister in Concord, North Carolina. The idea of instituting an educational enterprise for the training of negro youth was the result of a conference of negro ministers who wished to promote a type of education which would make for self-reliance in their race. In 1882 the institution was moved to Salisbury, where work began the first Wednesday in October with three teachers, three students, and a matron. Chartered as a four year college in 1885, Livingstone College has operated continuously ever since, and many of its students come from many states in the United States, from Canada, Central America, the West Indies, South America, and Africa. Named in honor of the great Christian missionary, philanthropist, and explorer, David Livingstone, Livingstone College opens its doors to all qualified applicants regardless of race, color, or creed. 33 The Campus Experience Enjoy a scenic campus experience!! The campus of Livingstone College includes about 75 acres of land and 21 buildings. The campus is compact and the many maple and Oak trees, impressive gates, lawns, and columned buildings make the campus most beautiful to behold. On the east side of the campus are the lovely Poets and Dreamers Garden and the mausoleum of the founder of our institution, Dr. Joseph Charles Price. sf . ... Joseph Morris Bio-Sketch Dr. Weston Mance Gilliam, a 1928 graduate of Livingstone College, received the doctor of humane letters degree in May of 1974 from the college. He retired in 1969 as agency secretary of the North Carolina Mutual Insurance Company. Survivors include his wife, Naomi Gilliam; one daughter, Mrs. Ruth Gilliam Duncan of Richmond, Virginia; two sons, Weston Mance, Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio an d Ralph Gilliam of Los Angeles, CA and four grandchildren. 188 When all is said and done, the rule of brotherhood remains as the indispensable prerequisite of success in the kind of national life for which we strive. Bio-Sketch Mr. Baxter Holman starred as a lineman at Carver High School in Winston-Salem, then became an all-conference tackle at North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC. Following graduation, he played three years of pro-football with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. Holman began his coaching career at Anderson High School as an assistant in 1961. Five years later, he was named head coach. He led Anderson to four district titles and three state championships. When Anderson was closed in 1970, Holman went to Mt. Tabor, where he was named the state’s coach of the year after leading the Spartans to a divisional championship. Mt. Tabor was also closed, so Holman moved to Winston-Salem State as an assistant for two years. Then he took the head coaching position at Livingstone in July of 1973. At Livingstone, Holman had five players drafted by the National Football League. One of the LC players Johnny Miller, became a starter for the San Francisco 49ers. 189 Press Onward Keep a brave spirit, and never despair Hope brings you messages through the keen air — Good is victorious — God everywhere Grand are the battles which you have to fight Be not downhearted, but valiant for right; Hope, and press forward, your face to the light. Bio-Sketch Bishop George Leake, minister, civil rights leader, social program administrator, and family man died at the age of 51. Reverend Leake was appointed Bishop of the llth Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. He founded an alcoholism program called Innovative and Concentrated Approaches to Combating Drug Use, Inc. in 1974. The program provided counseling and housing for alcoholics recruited from the streets of Charlotte. Leake became a forceful and influential personality during Charlotte’s civil rights movement of the I960’s. He led protest marches, demanded more jobs for blacks among county jail personnel, he organized boycotts against white merchants, yet he was a major force in preventing violent racial riots as had occurred in many other southern cities. In 1966, he ran for a seat in the N.C. House of Representatives. Three years later he ran for mayor of Charlotte. Finishing third in a four-man race and eventually throwing his support to John Belk, Leake’s campaign was so successful the political analysts and writers said, If George Leake were not a black man, he’d be the next mayor of Charlotte.” Bishop George Leake will be missed by all who knew and loved him. 190 The life of duty, not the life of mere ease or mere pleasure — that is the kind of life which makes the great man, as it makes the great nation. Bio-Sketch Mrs. Beatrice Cheatem Jackson departed this life December 5, 1981. She was the daughter of Elijah and Fannie Cheatem of Gainesville, Alabama. Mrs. Jackson was educated in the public schools of Alabama, was a graduate of Stillman College, Tuscaloosa, AL and did further studies at Livingstone College, The University of North Carolina, at Greensboro and Boston University in Boston, Massachusettes. She was formerly employed at Hood Seminary as a librarian and was last employed by the Rowan County Schools at Enochville Elementary School. Mrs. Jackson, a member at Soldiers’ Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, served as a member of the Missionary Society, the Christian Education Board, an assistant teacher in the Sunday School and a teacher in Vacation Bible School. She was a member of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. and the Sedgefield Women’s Club. She was the wife of Professor Henry E. Jackson. Survivors of the immediate family include one son, Kermit Darryl Jackson and a daughter, Cynthia Denise Jackson. 191 In Memoriam She hath done what she could: Where- soever this Gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her. Bio-Sketch Dr. Howard Thurman, Baptist minister, educator, philosopher and author died the spring of 1981. Dr. Thurman was chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Howard Thurman Education Trust Fund, dean emeritus of Marsh Chapel at Boston University, Boston, Mass, and a former professor at Howard University, Washington, D.C. He helped found an interracial, interdenominational church in San Francisco, California called the Church for Fellowship of All Peoples. Dr. Thurman contributed much to Livingstone College as well as to the world. His educational trust fund is a charitable trust whose purpose is to provide a channel for the enlistment of funds, and disburse them in a carefully planned program of support for religious, charitable, scientific, literary and educational causes. His books on religion and race include Deep River: An Interpretation of Negro Spirituals (1946) and The Creative Encounter (1954). A collection of tapes and books given to Livingstone by the Howard Thurman Trust Fund are housed in Carnegie Library at Livingstone. His wife, Mrs. Sue Bailey Thurman, survives him. 192 Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Founded: Indiana University Date: January 5, 1981 Chapter.- Gamma Delta Motto: Achievement in all fields of endeavor. Then slowly rise to higher heights, stretching and extending toward the heavens. Eventually, you sprung open, blossoming and blooming as though you were flowers and trees — the gifts from our God. Now that you have come into your own, as men and women, here at Livingstone College and are ready to leave this haven to make your way in the real” world, you must remember that this is not the end of learning, but the beginning. Carry with you all you have learned here and gather more knowledge along the way, as a rolling stone gathers no moss.
