For if you feel that you are being loved, your love becomes stronger. And in becoming stronger, it grows until it consumes your whole life. And your love should be your whole life. One should never say I once loved you. Because love is never a one time affair. Only physical love is such the case. Not true love. True love is always there, never uncertain. If you have been ' shot down ' as the saying goes Thank Cod that you are alive and not dead. For such a love was not true. And not being true, it would never have lasted. If it leaves you sad and with memories. If it makes you uncertain of the future. If it seems as if the end of the world is near, you must live each day to its fullest extent- Hoping that the pain goes away; Wishing that the memories leave you; Praying that your true love will feel as strong, if not stronger, in loving you, Love is something that you never want to shut your heart to; for if you shut your heart to love, you shut your eyes to life. And in shutting your heart to love, you become a plant and not the Supreme creature that Cod intended you to be - T.H.E. MOON - Count me o ' er earth ' s chosen heroes, they were souls that stood alone, While the men they agonized for hurled the contumelious stone, Stood serene, and down the future saw the golden beam incline To the side of perfect justice, mastered by their faith divine, By one man ' s plain truth to manhood and to God ' s supreme design. By the light of burning heretics Christ ' s bleeding feet I track, Toiling up new Calvaries ever with the cross that turns not back, And these mounts of anguish number how each generation learned One new word of that grand Credo which in prophet-hearts hath burned Since the first man stood God-conquered With his face to heaven upturned. 9 10 RELIGIOUS LIFE If you Love the Lord and his infinite grace you will not have to tell others, it will show in your face. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? For sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. - Luke 6:32-34 _ m- I L 16 DR. In 1968, Mrs. Duncan was bereaved by the loss of her husband. As President of Livingstone College Poets and Dreamers Garden Association, she worked assidously to bring beauty to the campus. During her following sunset years, she was successfully active in over twenty organizations making outstanding contributions as a member of the Salisbury City Board of Education, Vice-President of the Negro Business and Professional Women ' s Club, Vice-Chairman of the Salisbury Chapter of the National Council of Christians and Jews, Associate Trustee of Soldiers Memorial Church, Chairman of the Ecumenical. Celebrations of Salisbury Church Women United, and as a member of the Rowan Cooperative Christian Ministry. She worked well as a member of various social and civic groups. Many honors were bestowed upon Mrs. Ida Hauser Duncan and rightfully so, for she dedicated her life to the proposition that somehow, in some way all people should enjoy the bliss of growth, the power of noble action and the splendor of a life beautiful. THE ATLANTA SLAYINGS In memory of the slain youths of Atlanta, Georgia, the Livingstone College family would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the lives of twenty-five or more happy and carefree children whose lives have been mysteriously taken from earth ' s existence. Our prayers are with the families of these young people in hopes that your grieving hearts will be reli eved and justice will soon avail. Much appreciation goes to the fine young men of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. who took upon themselves to initiate a program and a march through the streets of Salisbury promoting togetherness and BLACK pride!!! MITCHELL Once again we have come to a close of another school year and this year was particularly rewarding for me. Rewarding due to the fact that I had accepted an immensed responsibility of producing a post - Centennial edition of the UVINGSTONIAN. As you looked through this volume I hope that you obtained some form of satisfaction. In any publication there are deadlines and we stretched them quite a bit, but in trying to get as much in as possible we had to omit certain sections. We pray that you not criticize us for what is omitted; but commend us on what was included. Many thanks go to my staff on the support given to me this year although I constantly stayed on them about one thing or another. I would like to especially commend Robert Dumas and Jerry Asbury for their photography contributions and for being there whenever I called upon them; Ray Tyson for the beautiful artwork in the class section; Glenn Grayson for his photography contributions and moral support in between his rigid work schedule; Cassandra Chuckie Wade, Denise Brown, Reginald Bradshaw and Lois Gaskins who never refused to lend a helping hand. Special thanks to Anita Gambrell who just gave of her time to help out whenever I called upon her and even when I did not and my heart goes out to Mr. Wilbert Sadler; our advisor, who never thought twice about the personal sacrifices he made in order to benefit the staff and who was a loyal and trusted friend. To the graduating class I wish you all the success in the world and I encourage the rising seniors to strive on toward their goals. In closing I bid you all farewell and pray that my predecessors will have as much joy and success in producing a good book. Livingstonianly yours, 166 CO-EDITOR ' S NOTE Congratulations and best wishes to the class of ' 81. The Yearbook Staff has worked overtime, between time, and above and beyond the call of duty to produce a yearbook that captured and highlighted all the memorable happenings during your college career. Our theme is A Second Time Aroun and I sincerely hope that you will cherish your yearbook for a lifetime. My position as co-editor of the LIVINCSTONIAN has led to many rewarding experiences that have contributed to my growth as a member of the Livingstone College family. There were times when we were very pleased and even astonished at the work accomplished as a result of burning the midnight oil. Then again, there were times when we thought we had run completely out of seeds for thought. Through these times I learned to be tolerant, patient, aggressive and assertive. Now I can say, with great relief, we made it! To all of you who gave unselfishly of yourself, ideas, time and talents, I sincerely thank you. This experience has enhanced my sense of responsibilities and given me the opportunity to grow spiritually and socially. Livingstonianly yours, Co-Editor of ' 81 LIVINCSTONIAN 167 ADVISOR ' S NOTE - DR. WILBERT L SADLER Dear Yearbook Staff, Thank you for permitting me to work with you. The minutes, hours, days and months that we labored on arduous challenges were all worthwhile. The challenges were not for naught for now you can be proud of the product you have produced. y I appreciate your ebullient spirits that kept us toiling when we were ready to give up. You have been a delight to work with even when I was distressed because you were not punctual and missed deadlines CjOOd lirk tn parh nnp rti vr n sni-l m i ur„-.. Livingstone, My Livingstone! Thy dear old name we sing, While memories cluster thick and fast, And closer to us cling. Beneath thy maples and thy oaks The zephyred breezes blow. Just: as they will in years to come, No matter where we go. O! Livingstone, my Livingstone! When thou art old with age, Thou, too, shalt hold a noble place That ' s bright on mem ' ry ' s page, And in the sky no cloud shall be Instead, thy sun shall beam. Prosperity shall live always amid its golden gleam. O! Livingstone, my Livingstone! Thy students come and go, The moments fly, the years go by With all their weal and woe. Along with fleet and nimble feet Oh, hasten on thy way, And fling the light of wisdom out Across the Wand ' rer ' s way. O! Livingstone, my Livingstone! Upon thy campus wide, In numbers many students roam - Some from the other side; And still they love; we can but hope; That they may e ' er be true To both thy names and colors too - The modest black and blue.
