As you begin to view these 172 pages let them be a re- minder of the accomplishments Livingstone College has made this year. Let each word and picture be an accomplishment in itself. Although some you may not see any accomplishment at all for Livingstone College, they surely happened, but you will have search for them. We would like to share with you the student body, faculty, staff, administration, trustees, alumni, and friends three ac- complishments that took place during the 1973-74 school year. .1 1. We are proud of the football team and the coaches who made it possible for Living- stone College to place second in the CIAA Conference. We are especially proud of our new Head Coach Baxter Holman, who arrived at Livingstone College just in time to lead the Bears on. The Marching Bears under the derection of Mr. Henry Duncombe was together and dynamite each time they took the field at home or on the road. BENJAMIN F. PAY TON Dr. Payton received his BA degree in 1955 from South Carolina State College in Orangeburg , South Carolina. His BD degree in 1958 from Har- vard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, MA degree in 1960 from Col- umbia University, New York, New York, PH.D degree in 1963 from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Queens 57 Bringing grace and charm to Livingstone College from Burlington, New Jersey is Miss Shirley Ann Mack, the reigning Miss Livingstone College. Shirley, the daughter of Mr. Mrs. J . C. Collins, is a senior Elementary Education (K-3) major. Her ambition after graduation is to teach kindergarten or nursery school and later to pur- sue graduate study . Although Miss Livingstone is her most im- portant position, she also is active as a member of Swing Phi Swing Social Fellowship, Inc., Pep Club, Kappa Court, President of SIMEA, Dormitory Assistant, Activities Committee, and at one time, reigned as Miss Sophomore C lass . We are very proud of Shirley and feel she, along with all our queens, uphold our theme Essence of Blackness. 61 Miss Junior Daring and lovely Miss Wanda Wendy Lewis represents the Junior Class. Wendy comes to us from New- burgh, New York and has a major in Soci- ology . She is the daughter of Mr.- Mrs. Floyd Lewis. Wendy is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Marching Band, and Julia B. Duncan Players. Alverta is a Senior mathematics major from Durham, North Carolina. She is the daughter of the Rev . Mrs . C . C . Satter- field, Jr. She also serves as Basileus of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Senior Counselor, Pep Club, and Secretary of the 1974 Living stonian Yearbook Staff. Alverta plans to attend graduate school and acquire a Master s of Computer Science Degree. 72 FElXOlOSftrPS swme p-ki TCU GACPCDA A£ ' PHA SWING PHI SWING SOCIAL FELLOWSHIP, INC. , was founded at Winston-Salem College in 1969 by twelve young Black women. Our pur- pose is to instill and stress black awareness throughout the community as well as on campus.. The Umoja Chapter of Livingstone College was ' chartered in 1972. Our motto is Unity and To- getherness . 77 UnA vailable for Photo OMEGA PSI PHI was founded at Howard Uni- versity in Washington, D. C. on November 17, 1911. The Omega ' s motto is Friendship is essential to the soul . The fraternity ' s colors are Purple and Gold. Lambda Psi DELTA SIGMA THETA was founded at Howard Uni- versity in 1913 by twenty- two determined black women. They dreamed of an organiza- tion that would de-emphasis the social side of sorority life and uplift public service. In 1974, over 65,000 Delta women have pledged to Break New Ground and bring about changes for blacks in America. The Delta women wear the colors of Crimson and Cream. A Beta Kappa 0 m Tr; - I Andrew Leak Larry McCalop PHI BETA SIGMA FRATERNITY was founded on January 9, 1914, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. It has been the goals, ideals and objectives of PHI BETA SIGMA to develop and instill in the minds of mankind brotherhood, service, schol- arship and to promote the general welfare of men and thereby serve as a spirit of motivation for future en- deavors.
