Text from Pages 1 - 166 of the 1973 volume:

L _j — S 1 , What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up Like a raisin in the sun ? And fester like a sore — And then run? i Does It siinR iiRe ruiieiL rrteut. Or crust and sugar over — Like a syrupy swee t ? Maybe it just sags Like a heavy load. Or does it explode? -Langslon Hughes PEACE, POWER, TOGETHERNESS Livingstonian 1972-73 Victor Hall Gilbert McRae EDITORS As each day passes, we become more wise, not so much that we forget past events, hut that we cherish them. With this is mind, we, the staff of the Livingstonian, extol the achievements of black egalitarians in the hope that this yearbook will not only reflect the blackness of those great men, but also the blackness of tho. e to come. ' ! LOOK TO THIS DAY Look to this day! For it is life, the very life of life. In its brief course lie all the verities and realities of your existence: The bliss of growth The glory of action: The splendor of beauty: For yesterday is already a dream, and tomorrow is only a vision: But today, well lived, makes every yes- terday A dream of happiness, and every to- morrow a vision of hope. Look well, therefore, to this day! Such is the salutation of the dawn! From the Sanskrit 3 With this poem we, the members of the Yearbook Staff, dedicate to Mr. Walter Jones the 1973 Liuingstonian. i Riseandgo into that darkened world invincible Leaving in ruin all the ancient myths and stereotypes • Engage not in idle revelry with docile idolaters Who with god fallaciously explain the inexplicable And all logical occurences adamantly annul Crush your foe with impunity and put to dust his Castles of quartz and his antipathies of granite Then sit back and take a much needed rest as That dreadful disease you so graciously created — the Pneumonoultramicroscopicobolcanoconiosis — rids this ' World of its staggering decadence and lethal injustice Miss Liuingstoj jit.. Brewtun Class of 1974 145 HISTORY OF THE PRAYER MEETING CHOIR The Liuingstone College Prayer Meeting Choir wan organized in 1960 by the Rev. George Maize, presently a pastor in one of the Zion Churches. Originally the group was called the Maize Singer.i. Rev. Maize, then a .student at Livingstone College, felt that a choir would add to the spirit of the Wednesday Night Prayer Services, held weekly on the college campus. Rev. Maize also felt that such a choir would add to the tone of the Col- lege. Rev. Maize loved to sing. The Choir was made up of Christian young men and women who also loved to sing and who dedicated their lives to Christian living, and they got a joy out of singing. Rev Maize was the first director. In 1961 the Maize Singers became the Prayer Meeting Choir Under the direction and inspiration of Rev. Maize, the choir grew in puputarity and in .uze. Requests for the services of this choir pured in from the churches in the vicinity of the college. The popularity of the Choir is .still spreading throughout North Carolina and the eastern portion of the Unites States. Since its inception, the choir has had five directors and three Presidents. Rev. Maize, Miss Detores Pouncey, Mr. Gary Meekings, Mr. Curtis Crockett, and currently, Mr. Ronald William. ' i, have served as directors. Miss Carolyn McCleod, who graduated from Livingstone in May 1971, served as President, preceding the tenure of the incumbent President, Mr. Leamon Brown. Prior to Miss McCleod ' s tenure. Miss Irene Faust .served as President. Miss Willie B. Atdrich, Hood Seminary Librarian, has been the advisor to the choir, except for a brief period in 1967, when Mrs. Madge Reynolds, became the Choir ' s advisor. In 196H. Mrs. Aldrich resumed her duties as the advisor. Presently there are two co-advisors, they are Mrs. Beatrice Jackson and Mr. Henry -Jackson, members of the staffs of Hood Seminary and Livingstone College respectively. The choir has rendered musical programs for churches throughout North Carolina and in other states. It has not restricted its services to Zion Churches. The Choir has appeared on The Hour of Opportunity on Char- lotte television station WSOC. The Choir has forty-one members. It is an integral part of the Religious Life and the Prayer Meeting of the College. It is a student organization. In February 1973 the Prayer Meeting Choir recorded their first album, which is hoped that the album will be a great .succes.s for the Prayer Meet- ing Choir. 147 Pray Meeting Choir Recording Their New Album My Awareness - My awarenesa- beautiful, strung. Ihe symbol of my blackness. . My awareness- bought a welcome change, and solidified me as a person. My awareness- made getting Black people together my life. My awareness- made me not only tooh at what was happening to me, but what wa.v happening to my people. My awari ness- was revolutionary, it turned Black nothingness into everything, white everthing into nothingness. My awareness- tied me closer to my people- I was no longer alone, yet I am alone. Alone- my mother and father don ' t understand. brothers and sisters won ' t listen. My awareness- is an oak tree, strong, and proud. My awareness- canniit bend. Cannot bend back to unconsciousness. An unconsciousness that would make me believe that I can ' t feed my family because I am a mismanager of money. An unconsciousness that would make me believe that my brother, now, lies dead in the street because he was a deliquent. An unconscientiousness that would make me backstep into whiteness, and sail on a sea of nothingness. The rests of my awareness will dig deeper, deeper into my hertiage and convictions and W-I-L-L take hold. Like the oak that dig deeper into the soi . My roots will hold fast and- W-I-L-L endure. I will last and be unchanging. work for and anticipate the calmness of summer. Freedom and Power Te-Taniska - (LERNEA FISHER) Class of 1976 - Hlnrk Queen by Rodney Mason Black queen — skin so s ift, so lovely, so brown — You ' re a treasurer to a brother ' s heart. Here to love, to cherish, to stay — Black queen, there is no one as beautiful as you: for you are the beauty of your people. Black queen, so fine — so divine — No one could ever take your place I ' m so happy that you ' re mine. Black queen.i all over the world. I love you all Cause you make us feel like Kings! Class of 197. ' ) Because I Am Black by Laverne McDuffie Because I am black. I must work harder to prove , I am a person. Because I am black, my best is not enougli. Because I am black. I am denied my rights. Because lam black. 1 live in fear of being killed a white man ' s bullet. Because I am black. I live in hell. Because I am black. I ' ll never he free. Class of 197n ; will weather the stern of winter BLACK IS LOVE by ROBERT JETER Black is more than just the color of a person ' s skin, and the fact that one man ' s features are different from those of another. Be proud and hold your head up high because you are different, even though people say that you are an outcast of society. Just look up above you and keep on fighting the. good fight, because right always conquers might in the end. And although sometimes your heart seems as if it ' s going to explode, don ' t stop then; but keep the faith that led your ancestors out of the bondage of slavery and misery. And when the end seems near, pull all the strength that you have inside of your body out, and leave it there. And then make it do whatever you deem is necessary for you to continue in this world of use. For as long as you know that you are what your Creator made you, then you just keep reaching for that star that everyone said you ' ll never reach. Because whenever someone abuses, misuses and criticizes you for your color, just remember that Black is love. Class of ' 74 Renewing Faith by JOHNNY JOHNSON I knew you that first day As our eyes met in that room Across the hall From the listening machines The meeting of our eyes Started an avalanche That may eventually Reach my paper wall And tear it down. On, but don ' t let my paper well Fool you because it Has withstood Countless avalanches before yours. But I must say that There is a slight crack That has appeared Near the center reinforce- ments. And lam afraid. Class of ' 74 To You by PARTICIA GWYNN Define our unusual gratitude, Loving — and say love ends on names quite unique in captive keeping.
