PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENTS OF LIVINGSTONE COLLEGE SALISBURY, NORTH CAROLINA CO-EDITORS WILLIAM MOSLEY DOUGLAS RUFFIN 1971 Foreword Man ' s development can be marked by reflecting on his past mistakes, present accomplishments, and future goals. We assert that Livingstone College is continuing to progress by learning from her past mistakes, her present accomphshments, and is steadily working toward a better future, which will equip her graduates to negotiate the systems of an ever changing world. With this in mind, we the staff of the 1971 edition of the LIV- INGSTONIAN present to you in pictures reflections of Living- stone ' s past, views of her present, and glimpses of her future. Douglas Ruffin William Mosley 2 I Do Not Care How Dark the Night I Beheve in the Coming of the Morning Dr. Joseph C. Price 3 Miss Rountree as she receives the Jennie Smallwood Price Award for 1970. An insight into Miss Rountree ' s devotion and interest in Liv- ingstone may best be expressed in her own words: As a hbrarian I firmly believe that the dissemination of knowledge is viable in a college situation with friendly coercion — particularly Livingstone College. I believe in the youth of Livingstone. They are aggressive and involved and their participation in the democratic process will prepare them for the pohtical, rehgious and civic arena of their final communities. I am above 30 the ancient age so this honor is accepted with humility. However, my normal approach to dialogue with students, disciphnary action when needed, ad- vice and counseling whenever accepted. The library assistance I am trained to give will continue. Miss Louise M. Rountree was born in Barnwell, South Carolina. She received her A.B. from Morris Col- lege, Sumter, South Carolina, her B.L.S. from the Atlanta University School of Li- brary Service, Atlanta, Georgia, and her M.L.S. from Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York. Miss Rountree has been employed as a teacher at Estill High School and as a teacher librarian at Allendale County High School, both of which are in South Caro- lina. At Livingstone she has served as Assis- tant Librarian, Assistant Professor of Li- brary Science, Acting Head Librarian, and Head Librarian. During her tenure at Livingstone, she has co-advised the Y.W.C.A., held membership in the Religious Life Committee, been Sec- retary of Committee on Fraternities and Sororities, and has served on the Library Committee. In the way of organizations. Miss Roun- tree holds membership in the American Library Association, Southeastern Library Association, North Carolina Library Asso- ciation, Rowan Citizens for better Libra- rians, Rowan County Library Association, and the American Association of University Women. Miss Rountree ' s professional contribu- tions include several publications among which are six bibliographies: An Anno- tated Bibliography on Joseph C. Price, An Annotated Bibliography on Living- stone College, An Annotated Bibhogra- phy on James E. K. Aggrey, Collectors item Bibliography on Slavery, The Ameri- can Negro and African Studies, and Multi-Cultures. A pamphlet entitled Blue Bear Trax, Highlights of the Liv- ingstone College Blue Bear Football record, The Negro American Citizen, and Stu- dents Guide to the Library. 5 Dedication William Mance Gilliam Former President of the General Alumni Association 6 Mr. Gilliam as he turns the first spade of soil symbolic of the dedication of the Jennie Smallwood Price Azalea Trail in Livingstone ' s Poets and Dreamers Garden. He is presently married to the former Naomi Wilhams and is the father of three children and the grandfather of four grandchildren. Mr. Gilliam is a graduate of Livingstone College and in 1956 graduated from the National Insurance Association School in Agency Management. His career began in 1928 with the North Carohna Mutual Life Insurance Com- pany. His positions with North Carohna Mutual included jobs as Agent, Assistant Manager, Agency Supervisor, and Assistant to the Agency Director. He retired on December 31, 1969, ending thirty-one years of service. He is very active in local and civic affairs. Mr. GilUam has served as President of the General Alumni Association and Treasurer of the Local Chapter of the Alumni Association of Livingstone College. In 1923 she worked as a student aid to the registrar. She received her A.B. Degree from Livingstone College, after which she was appointed Acting Reg- istrar from 1925-1936 by President W. J. Tent. The following year she began her services as full time registrar. From 1936-1957. she served in the dual capacity of registrar-treasurer. Since 1958 her position has reverted to the single role of Regis- trar. For her long service and tireless devotion. Miss Duncan is indeed a valuable asset to the Livingstone College Community. 9 Sixth President of Livingstone College F. Livingstone College, being mindful of its past, is built upon a proud heritage to insure its students of a bright and promising future. Livingstone has grown from classrooms, instructors, and students into one of the fastest growing Black Institutions in the South today. The curriculm is so flexible as to give the individual student the maximum amount of freedom in the selection of a program of course to meet his particular needs. The academic program is divided into two groups — first, a basic group of liberal stud- ies designed for the general education of all students; second, a group of special- ized courses leading to preparation for some occupational or professional field. In order to provide a well-rounded education for its students, Livingstone College offers courses leading to degrees in the following areas: Sociology History Social Studies Political Science Biology Chemistry Mathematics ' English French Music Business Education Elementary Education Biology Department Chemistry Department Department Of Education Psycholog Mrs. Blue Dr. Frank R.
