In these golden years to come we will look back on the year ' 68- ' 69 as one of many changes, conquests and dreams. We, the staff of the Living- stonian, have tried to capture these moments in pictures and in words, thus we have prepared this yearbook for those persons who come to Livingstone in FULFILLMENT OF A DREAM. DEDICATION In July, 1958, Dr. Samuel Edward Duncan accepted the leadership responsibihties of Livingstone College. From the very beginning, it seemed that he was motivated by a magnificent obsession , a strong urge to fulfill a dream. The College Family was intensely aware of his desire to give back to the institution the ten years of service and inspiration that he had received as a youth. Undoubtedly when Doctor Duncan expired at his home Wednesday, July 10, 1968, he had seen a dream fulfilled. He had worked untiringly to translate his dream into a reality. The Great Master permitted him to return in full measure that which he had received. A natvie of Madisonville, Kentucky, Doctor Duncan grew up in the SaUsbury community, receiving his high school and collegiate training at Livingstone College. He earned the M.A. and PH.D. degrees at Cornell University. During his professional career, Doctor Samuel Edward Duncan served as teacher, athletic director, principal, state supervisor of Negro high schools and president of Livingstone College. Not only did he devote time to his profession, but he devoted a great deal of energy to organizations beyond the realm of employment. He held membership in the following: North Carolina Council of Churches, North Carolina Teachers Association (serving as president of these two organizations), North Carolina Board of Higher Education, U.S. Civil Rights Commission, Piedmont University Center, board of trustees of Palmer Memorial Institute, study commission of the Southern Regional Educational Board, State Welfare Board and the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. Doctor Duncan ' s name will be preserved in the annals of Livingstone College as the Builder . During his ten years of administration, several new buildings were constructed. Not only will he be remembered as the builder, but he will be remembered as a Friend. May his idea that Livingstone College is a place where no one gets lost live on. Because Doctor Samuel Edward Duncan had a dream he became the Builder , and because in his expression of friendUness he developed a heart that was very big , we dedicate in his memory the 1969 Livingstonian. In Grateful Recognition
