Text from Pages 1 - 158 of the 1969 volume:

m In these golden years to come we will look back on the year ' 68- ' 69 as one of many changes, conquests and dreams. We, the staff of the Living- stonian, have tried to capture these moments in pictures and in words, thus we have prepared this yearbook for those persons who come to Livingstone in FULFILLMENT OF A DREAM. Marshall L. Jackson Editor in Chief DEDICATION In July, 1958, Dr. Samuel Edward Duncan accepted the leadership responsibihties of Livingstone College. From the very beginning, it seemed that he was motivated by a magnificent obsession , a strong urge to fulfill a dream. The College Family was intensely aware of his desire to give back to the institution the ten years of service and inspiration that he had received as a youth. Undoubtedly when Doctor Duncan expired at his home Wednesday, July 10, 1968, he had seen a dream fulfilled. He had worked untiringly to translate his dream into a reality. The Great Master permitted him to return in full measure that which he had received. A natvie of Madisonville, Kentucky, Doctor Duncan grew up in the SaUsbury community, receiving his high school and collegiate training at Livingstone College. He earned the M.A. and PH.D. degrees at Cornell University. During his professional career, Doctor Samuel Edward Duncan served as teacher, athletic director, principal, state supervisor of Negro high schools and president of Livingstone College. Not only did he devote time to his profession, but he devoted a great deal of energy to organizations beyond the realm of employment. He held membership in the following: North Carolina Council of Churches, North Carolina Teachers Association (serving as president of these two organizations), North Carolina Board of Higher Education, U.S. Civil Rights Commission, Piedmont University Center, board of trustees of Palmer Memorial Institute, study commission of the Southern Regional Educational Board, State Welfare Board and the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. Doctor Duncan ' s name will be preserved in the annals of Livingstone College as the Builder . During his ten years of administration, several new buildings were constructed. Not only will he be remembered as the builder, but he will be remembered as a Friend. May his idea that Livingstone College is a place where no one gets lost live on. Because Doctor Samuel Edward Duncan had a dream he became the Builder , and because in his expression of friendUness he developed a heart that was very big , we dedicate in his memory the 1969 Livingstonian. In Grateful Recognition Acting President Dr. Victor J. Tulane assumed the role and responsibility of Acting President of Livingstone College. He ably stepped in and filled the position left vacant by the untimely death of President Duncan. Dr. Tulane showed that he was well abreast of the workings and functions of the President ' s office. So, Dr. Tulane, congratulations for a job well done! Dr. Victor J. Tulane Mrs. Ruth Anderson 6 F. George Shipman— President President F. George Shipman Dr. F. George Shipman was appointed Sixth President of Livingstone College on January 6, 1969. He was born June 1 1, 1919, in Clarkton, North Carolina and graduated from Central High School, Elizabethtown, North Carohna. He was married to Miss Louise McKoy, Clarkton, North Carohna on December 22, 1948. They have one child, Sheldon Rene. Dr. Shipman has specialized in the education of disadvan- taged students. During 1966-68 he served as consuUant for the U. S. Office of Education on the commission responsible for the NDEA Institute for advanced study in teaching disadvantaged youths. In his statement of educational philosophy, Dr. Shipman is quoted as saying In our society education is an equalizing force among men. It must be free and universally available to all segments of the population if our society is to continually reconstruct and maintain viable to the extent that each man is accorded full opportunity to maximize his potential individually and socially. I respect the individual for his worth and for what he is capable of becoming. The individual has immense promise for unlimited achievement and satisfaction under the Judea- Christian tradition. It is in this tradition that man may achieve his intellectual potential through the educative process and his social fulfillment through democratic procedures. 7 Office of the Dean Dr. J. C. Simpson Academic Dean Miss Elmira C. Cannon Student Secretary Mrs. Lula Holloway Secretary to the Dean 9 11 Business Office Mr. Arthur L. Jefferson Business Manager Mrs. Izetta R. Spencer Chief Accountant Mrs. Phyllis A. BeU Clerk-Typist Mrs. Jane M. Harris Secretary 12 Service to the student. Service to the employer. Service to the institution. This is the motto of the Career CounseHng and Placement Office. To the senior it is a gateway to the future; to the underclassmen, it is the hour of decision; to the employer, it is making his needs and operations known to the students and alumni and enabling him to visit and interview qualified appli- cants and to make contact with the professors and other personnel; to the institution, it is a challenge for cohesive relationships with faculty and staff and a dessiminator of data on program planning, business outlooks, statistical and factual data and numerous other service. Mrs. Doris Jones Director of placement Mrs. Edrina Turner Secretary 14 Jackie Dillingham Student Worker The Student Health Service was established to maintain and improve the physical and mental health of the students of Livingstone College. Over the years, Mrs. Reeves, the director, has seen the health center grow from a one room to a modern complex in a wing of Goler Hall. She dreams of the day when there will be an entire building to meet the health needs of the students on campus. The students can also rely on the medical attention of Salisbury-Rowan County, surrounding areas, and the state. On many occasions, Mrs. Reeves has taken students to Chapel Hill and the Duke Hospital. Student Health Worker Mrs. Lois Reeves Mrs. Reeves Instructor of Health 15 Library Mrs. Josephine P. Sherrill Librarian Miss Ella M. Hargett 16 The Andrew Carneige Library is one source of great pride at Livingstone College. The perpetual growth and renovation of the hbrary depicts the ideal that the institution endeavors to achieve. The library, one of the hot spots on campus has had major improvements over the past year, particularly in- side. $20,000 was appropriated for the interior renova- tion of the hbrary. Wall-to-wall carpeting was installed. Also along with that a book elevator. These two new installments has enchanced the environment of the h- brary. The library at the present has approximately 70,000 volumes. This does not include such materials as micro- films, filmstrips, and records, of which the library has a wide selection. It is an established fact that the library of any college is one of the most important structures in the hfe of the college. We as Livingstonians feel that our library with a ratio of over 80 volumes per student, is one of the best to be found at any college of our size. Mrs. B. M. Sell Reference Librarian Mrs. Minnie H.
