Robinson Editors 2 DEDICA TION Dr. Victor J. Tulane When the course of man ' s life has been willingly dedicated to the growth of an institution, it is befittingto express appreciation in apermanent man- ner so that posterity can know of his outstanding services. It is for this reason that the students of Livingstone College dedicate this, the 1966 edition of the LIVINGSTONIAN to Dr. Victor J. Tulane. 3 Fifth President of Livingstone College Never was there a more industrious, inventive, skillful, presidential type at Livingstone College than Samuel E. Dun- can. Bishop W. J. Walls THE ROMANCE OF A COLLEGE Dr. John Hope Franklin, noted historian, being greeted and congratulated by Dr. Duncan and Dr. Victor J. Tulane. Dr. Duncan at a formal occasion, presenting Skyne Uku of Nigeria. The president’s contacts are international. Dr. and Mrs. Duncan entertain friends and offi- cials of the Church and College at home. Mrs. Walls, Bishop Walls, Dr. Hoggard, Dr. and Mrs. Duncan, Bishop Spotswood. 4 Dr. Samuel E. Duncan President of Livingstone College GREETINGS TO THE STAFF: You have my commendation for continuing one of the greatest traditional under- takings of the College in the publication of the LIVINGSTONIAN of 1966. It seems significant that the staff is entrusted with the task of recapturing some of the opinions, expressions and activities of students and general staff in the his- torical setting of a Ten-Year Development Program. We must not underestimate the value of your experience to your future in this exciting venture of the institution at this time. As you recall the unforgettable days beneath the maples and the oaks in years ahead, may you feel that in some way you contributed your bit to that component of the implementation of the institution ' s philosophy in making it A College Where No One Gets Lost. Join hands with those who will succeed you as did your predecessors and from your experience, aid in the publication of the LIVINGSTONIAN of 1967. 5 The Assistant To The President Dr. Victor J. Tulane As a result of Livingstone ' s rap- id growth and the increasing demands being made upon President S. E. Duncan, a new position, that of As- sistant to the President, has been created. The honored person named to fulfill the numerous obligations engendered by this post is Dr. Victor J. Tulane, former Dean of Instruction here at Livingstone. Included in the duties which Dr. Tulane is currently performing are representing the president in his absence, making out-of-town appearances on behalf of the president and the college family, and correlating on-and off-campus activities. In addition to these duties, Dr. Tulane, in retaining his position as Head of the Division of Natu- ral Sciences, is currently making plans for the construction of the $500,000 Science Building. He is also responsible for the management of the $20,000 matching grant from the National Science Foun- dation. During Dr. Tulane ' s six years as Dean of Instruction much progress was made. The most outstanding achievement was the school ' s accreditation by the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges. 6 Dean— College of Liberal Arts Dr. James C. Just as the nerve center in the body controls and motivates the bodily functions, the administrative staff of a college controls and motivates the students. Through the perform- ance of their functions, the staff has inspired, within the students, new concepts which will en- able the students to cope with the problems of the future. Douglas M. All have a history of their own which places them in the fore-front of other landmarks on the campus. THE FOOTBALL MEMORIAL Unique to Livingstone College and outstanding in the history of sports events, The Football Memorial commemorates the first Negro inter- collegiate football game played in this country. THE GATES OF LIVINGSTONE The outer gates of the institution mark the beginning of the campus proper. To all Livingstonians, at one time or another, they constitute the gates of home. THE FREEDOM PLAQUE The only one of its kind in the world, the Freedom Plaque commemorates the heritage of the N egro ' s struggle for freedom. Created by Metta War- wick Fuller, the plaque was presented to the institution in 1963. The final resting place of the founder of the in- stitution, Price ' s Tomb, serves as a place of in- spiration to all Living- stonians. 17 THE TOMB OF JOSEPH CHARLES PRICE FEATURE Dr. King admonishes the class of 1965 in his speech, Your Own Little Lambarene. Grand Marshal Simpson leads off the academic procession with the President, the speaker, and the President ' s party. Commencement 1965 The crowning event of each school year is the commencement activities. The seniors are anxious, the parents are relieved, and the faculty are elegant in their academic attire. Last year Living- stone held its eighty-third commencement exercise with Dr. John E. King, President of Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia, Kansas. The faculty performs a tradition of com- mencement by providing an aisle for the graduating class to make their procession through. How- ever, this did not stop classes, basketball games or student recreation. The snow completely covered the grounds and created a beautiful winter scene. The campus was covered by a blanket of pure white for several days. Students built snow men, threw snow balls, and just had a good time. Many students from other lands were amazed that some people were seeing snow for the first time. 68 YEARBOOK STAFF EXECUTES NEW FORMAT The 1966 LIVINGSTONIAN represents an attempt to join the trend in college yearbooks. The new format includes more copy and re- lated photographs which tell a story. Such progress was made possible by the retention of experienced students who had the desire to give LIVINGSTONE COLLEGE a big- ger and better yearbook. Under the leadership of Bobby Norris and Robert Robinson as editors, and with the ex- perience in lay-out of Julia Steele, the LIVING- STONIAN was able to get to press quicker and back into the hands of the students sooner. The new-type title page is the creation of Eddie Mann, art editor, it is an exact photo- graphic representation of his artistic work and lettering. (L to R): C. Allen, R. Robinson, J. Elliott, J. M. Steele, and B. Jackson. Clifton A lien has provided us with many features which are found in several places throughout the book, and James Staton and James Gray took charge of the advertisements. Miss Betty J. Verbal offered her guidance and ser- vices to the staff for the second consecutive year. Del- m ar Publishing Company of Charlotte, through its repre- sentative, Mr. Bullock, saw that the company gave us the best service it had to offer. Many other students, too numerous to mention, of- fered their services, their photographs, and their typing ability. This, the 1966 LIVINGSTONIAN is a product of Livingstonians. Next year, the staff hopes to go even further, pre- senting Livingstone College its first LIVINGSTONIAN with color. The new constitution, which is part of the Student ' s Handbook, pro- vides for several governmental units which did not exist before to ad- minister the business of the Student Government. The Student Cabinet has ultimate student authority in legislative matters. The Student Court has authority to receive and try major infractions of the constitution and by-laws. The Student Commission recommends policies to the Student Cabinet. The Student Cabinet ' s representation is made up from the four academic classes. The House Councils have the authority of governing student life in each respective dormitory. James R. Gavin and Melvin Robinson pres- ident and vice-president respectively of the Student Government. The new constitution also provides for a Summer Commission which will function after the regular terms are over. Under the leadership of James Gavin as President and Melvin Robinson, Vice President, both honor students, the Stu- dent Government strives for greater par- ticipation by the student body in the role they should play in directing student life.
