History of Livingstone College Livingstone College has a rich heritage. Incorporated in 1879, the first sessions were held in 1880 in one room of the parsonage of the late Bishop C. R. Harris, who was then a minister in Concord, North Carolina. Its founder and first president was Joseph Charles Price, a man of boundless energy and talent. Organization was more definitely completed two years later, and the institution was moved to Salisbury, the county seat of Rowan County, North Carolina, where work began the first Wednesday in October, 1882. The new site consisted on one building and forty acres of land. The school opened with three teachers, three pupils and a matron. In 1885, the General Assembly of North Carolina granted a new charter, and thename of the institution was changed from Zion Wesley Institute to Zion Wesley College. In 1887, its name was changed to Livingstone College by a legislative act and was named in honor of David Livingstone, the Christian missionary, philanthropist, and explorer. Such was the beginning of Livingstone. The institution has grown. Now, its students come from almost every state in the United States and from Africa. Livingstone ' s physical plant has been increased by fifteen large brick buildings and 272 acres of land with a total value in excess of two million dollars. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Livingstone College is largely supported by the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, but its academic operations are entirely nonsectarian. Ever mindful of its rich heritage, Livingstone College has renewed its committment to fulfill these objectives and has resolved that in the process, its triple goal shall be to awaken beauty, to direct toward order, to inspire always. Dr. Samuef Duncan GREETINGS TO THE STAFF: You have been engaged in one of the most important undertakings of the College program. Like the staffs before you, yours has been the major responsibility for capturing and recaptur- ing some of the highlights of College Life of which you have been a significant part. The students entrusted to your hands a noble venture by their support and that you have worked diligently and effectively is evidenced by the nature of your publication. The students of today who have the privilege of walking beneath . . . . . . the Maples and the Oaks and thousands who shall follow them and learn the meaning of the black and the blue will relive many times the vivid experiences of their educational careers. Yours it has been to help maintain the meaning of these experiences and perpetuate the traditions of the institution in your time. The results of your efforts will extend into the tomorrow as many will look to their yesteryears in what the college contributed to their lives and their contributions to it. We commend you and your Associates for the publication of the yearbook and we are glad that you are a vital part of the Livingstone that moves ever ahead toward the greater realization of its designated educational goals. Dr. ancf 7 Trs. c 5. C. D uncan THE PRESIDENT 5
