History of Livingstone College Livingstone College has a rich heritage. Incorporated in 1879, the first sessions were held in 1880 in one room of the parsonage of the late Bishop C. R. Harris, who was then a minister in Concord, North Carolina. Its founder and first president was Joseph Charles Price, a man of boundless energy and talent. Organization was more definitely completed two years later, and the institution was moved to Salisbury, the county seat of Rowan County, North Carolina, where work began the first Wednesday in October, 1882. The new site consisted on one building and forty acres of land. The school opened with three teachers, three pupils and a matron. In 1885, the General Assembly of North Carolina granted a new charter, and thename of the institution was changed from Zion Wesley Institute to Zion Wesley College. In 1887, its name was changed to Livingstone College by a legislative act and was named in honor of David Livingstone, the Christian missionary, philanthropist, and explorer. Such was the beginning of Livingstone. The institution has grown. Now, its students come from almost every state in the United States and from Africa. Livingstone ' s physical plant has been increased by fifteen large brick buildings and 272 acres of land with a total value in excess of two million dollars. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Livingstone College is largely supported by the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, but its academic operations are entirely nonsectarian. Ever mindful of its rich heritage, Livingstone College has renewed its committment to fulfill these objectives and has resolved that in the process, its triple goal shall be to awaken beauty, to direct toward order, to inspire always.
