DR. E. L. HARRIS Class Advisor TO A BLACK COAL MINER The carbide lamp on your forehead is a gleam- ing star, The ebony walls around you are blacker than the jungles through which your ancestors have wandered. Life for you too is a jungle, you must battle the falling slate, the black damp, not to mention the greedy mine-owners. You should be thankful that God in his infinite Wisdom has placed on your forehead, a gleam- ing Star. Thomas F. Fletcher Seeking the fruits of knowledge in the Carnegie Library. 4 1

We, the Senior Class of 1960, with undying love, respect and gratitude, and with sincerity that fills our hearts to overflowing, dedicate this 1960 LIVINGSTONIAN to our beloved par- ents. Finally their hopes, anxieties, and fondest dreams have been realized. Our beloved parents have worked, worried, and prayed for us during these four memorable years, thus we are the class of 1960. Even as this very afternoon fades into evening, and the memories of the years sur- round us, we humbly, and respectfully dedicate this annual to our beloved parents. ir

Class Histottj In the fall of Nineteen 56, 120 young men and women trom all over the United btates disem- barKed at Liivmgstone College, .eager, wary and anticipatmg. As that very September afternoon slowly faded, we had already begun to take our places in the Livingstone family. The Freshman Class of 1956 was a very versatile and progressive one. Unhesitantly we moved into the cultural, so- cial, athletic, and academic aspects of the campus life. Guided by Miss Blanche Jordan we elected the following class officers, Benjamin Rochester, President, Charles Littlejohn, Vice President, Loree Hall, Secretary, Vernon Shannon, Treas- urer, Talmadge McDow Jr. Council Representa- tive. Charles Hunt, Charles Littlejohn, Alvin Damon, Willie Graham, Jethro Partee, Harold Flemming became members of the football team with Willie Graham, Charles Hunt, and Alvin Damon being regular performers. Cheering the fellows on to victories were cheerleaders ; Rose Reasor, DeVese Perry, Evelyn Hargrove, and Genevieve G. Farmer. Ruby Etter was our can- didate for Miss Livingstone, and Miss Marie Berry was selected to the Homecoming Court. During the same year other events taking place, Gwendolyn Spease was elected Sweetheart of the Sphinx Club and also May Queen. Charles Hunt, Loree Hall, Evelyn Hargrove had leading roles in the major production of the Drama Guild, A Man Called Peter. Academically we had stu- dents with very high averages, some of them were Gwendolyn Spease, Faye Souder, Talmadge McDow, Jr., Milton Williams, Jacqueline Sinton, Charles Hunt, H, and Ora P. Davenport. Later that year, Dr. W. J. Trent became ill, and relinquished his position to Professor J. H. Broc- kett who became Acting President until Dr. Sam- uel E. Duncan was appointed President of the In- stitution. The year quickly faded and we emerged upon our Sophomore year, wiser, prouder and a bit more informed. The class made a wise selection as we elected Benjamin Rochester for our pres- ident again. Miss Loree Hall was secretary, Treas- urer, Bettye Mayes. Council Representatives Tal- madge McDow and Milton Williams. As the Blue Bears took the football into our first game, fans found the following Sophomores in the starting lineup, they were ; Charles Hunt, Charles Littlejohn, Alvin Damon, Willie Graham and Jethro Partee. Three Sophomores again were given parts in the year ' s leading production, they were ; Loree Hall, Fredrick Sanders, and Charles E. Hunt, Jr. A number of us went into Sororities and Frater- nities this year. May Queen again came from the Sophomore class, Jo Ann Bowens Holmes. Acad- emically Faye Souder, Talmadge McDow, Douglas Sanders and Charles Hunt were outstanding. Lo- ree Hall was selected Miss U.N.C.F. In September 1958, a very successful mature, and competent Junior class returned to the Ivy clusters halls of Livingstone College. Again Miss Cora Drakeford was our Advisor and we elected Jethro Partee III, as our president, Vice-President was Charles E. Hunt Jr., Jo Ann Holmes, Secre- tary and Frank Hunter Treasurer. Our Council representatives were Talmadge McDow, and Charles Hunt Jr. Charles Littlejohn, Willie Gra- ham, Jethro Partee, Joseph Lavie and Alvin Damon were selected to the all E 1 A C football team. During this year Benjamin Rochester was National President of the Pre-Alumni Club. Dorothy McCoy was class representative to the UNCP Charles E. Hunt, Jr., was elected National Vice President of the Inter-Collegiate Drama As- sociation. Genevieve P armer and Gladys Torrence were Miss Livingstone and Miss Homecoming at- tendants respectively. Gwendolyn Spease was Sweetheart of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. The Junior and Senior prom was tremendously suc- cessful under the expert guidance of Miss Joyce Marie Hodges, the theme was, A Night In Tro- picabana. Talmadge McDow, Faye Souder, Douglas Sand- ers, David Boger were elected to Beta Kappa Chi, the National Honorary Science Fraternity. Among the college ' s Who ' s Who selections were three Juniors, Talmadge McDow, Faye Souder, and Jethro Partee. All things considered the Junior class of 1958-59 was a class composed of leaders and outstanding persons in every walk of the col- lege life. In September, 1959 one hundred and eight gracefully poised, intellectually sound and fiercely nxious seniors returned to the campus of Living- stone College. As a mother is to a small child, so is a Senior Class to any Institution, and the Sen- ior Class of 1959-1960 was surely no exception. Mr. E. L. Harris was selected to be our Advisor, the class then elected the following officers: Tal- madge McDow, President, Milton Williams, Vice President, Dorothy McCoy, Secretary, Frank Hunter, Treasurer. Our Senior year was filled with many happenings that were new to us. We immediately began planning our Yearbook, with Charles E. Hunt II, acting as Editor-in-Chief. Mil- ton Williams, Assistant Editor-in-Chief and Joyce Marie Hodges, and Gwendolyn Spease leading the layout staff. Wilma Harris, Dorothy McCoy, Mar- lene Douglas. Patsy Jackson, and Margaret Glenn were typists. Miss Marie Berry was selected as Miss Home- coming. Sara Conley was selected as Miss Liv- ingstone, and Miss Ruby Etter as Miss United Negro Colleore Fund. Maynard Sandridge was selected as Co-Captain of the basketball team. Miss Dorothy McCoy was selected as Sweetheart of Alpha Phi Alpha Fra- ternity, and Sara Conley was selected as Sweet- heart of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. Willie Gra- ham and Emery Partee were elected Co-Captain of the football team. Miss Wilma Harris was selected as Miss Senior Class, Miss Geneva Gillespie and Mrs. Joann Bowen Holmes were selected as her attendants. We hope that our achievements will become a monument to education and insure us a perman- ent place of honor and esteen among the residence of Salisbury, as well as, the citizens of the United States. As we depart these hallowed halls, and take a step onto the threshold of life, we sincerely hope that our hopes, our efforts, and those of our par- ents and professors have not been in vain, but that our achievements, no matter how small, may stand as living testimony of our faith in the American way of life. 5
