Text from Pages 1 - 92 of the 1957 volume:

iviNc tcNicN Foreword It may be that the gulfs will wash us down; It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles And see the great Achilles, whom we knew; Though much is taken, much abides. And though we are not now that strength. Which, in old days, moved earth and heaven. That which we are we are One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, But strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield. — Tennyson It is indeed with ineffable pleasure that the Senior Class of 1957 presents this Diamond Jubilee edition of our yearbook, commemorating the earnest strivings and noble achievements of our unforgettable historic past. Though it is impossible to recapture the complete glory and resplendent grandeur of those years, particularly the last four, the Livingstonian of 1957 purports to revive some of the most illustriously eventful years in the development of our Alma Mater and in the college germination of this — our Senior Class. Dedication For the interest she has shown to serve willingly, unselfishly, and open-heartedly, asking nothing in return, for the service she has rendered with dignity, pride, and poise, we the Graduating Class dedicate this 1957, Livingstonian to Mrs. Victoria Prince Yates. But we moved right in without even a clue. During our sophomore year we gained a little poise; Our voices became softer and we made less noise. No longer afraid, we spoke with pride ' Twas easier now to take matters in stride. By this time we had chosen our own special course; Each separate in study but joined in loving discourse. We were a part of the choir and other clubs too And did all we could for the old Black and Blue. Our Junior year was tops; we ' ll never forget. The task was great but we had nothing to regret — Our Float and Slabtown Convention were prizes to behold And our Prom for the seniors glittered like gold. Now we are seniors and must depart, But we ' ll never forget those who gave us our start. Our parents, our teachers have all labored with care. We ' ll always be grateful with memories to share. Farewell colleagues, teachers and friends so dear. You ' ve been so wonderful since we ' ve been here. You- have given us courage to conquer our task, Through your help we have reached our goal — at last. Our old Alma Mater that we love so true, Livingstone, Livingstone our dear Black and Blue! What happy years with so much to gain. So God bless you all until we meet again. class History September 8, 1953, a new city was formed within the state of Livingstone College with a population of one hundred forty-two citizens. The groundwork for this small but powerful city was started under the direction of Mayor Daniel Harriston and City Manager Miss Blance Jordan. A few of our citizens were able to hold their own with members of other cities in the state. Citizens Juanita Brock was attendant to Miss Livingstone, Violet Tillman was attendant to Miss Home- coming, Earl Clowney topped the dean ' s list for the year and Hilda Bryant re- ceived top honors in the Freshman Oratorical Contest. During our second year of construction many avenues were opened up under the leadership of Mayor Penny Bridges and City Manager Dr. Stanley Smith. We were busy on every foundation, but we took time out to salute citizens Peggy Mills attendant to Miss Livingstone, EInora Jones attendant to Miss Homecoming and Earl Clowney student of the month. This city really grew during the third year. There was a decrease in citizen- ship but certainly not in determination and confidence. The citizens turned out well at the polls, and Mrs. V. P. Yates was elected our new city manager with James Cobbs as mayor. What fun we had building this year! Citizens Victoria McAdoo was attendant to Miss Livingstone and Violet Tillman was again attendant to Miss Homecoming. The second half of the year brought about a change in our government and citizens Lucy Stewart moved in the mayor ' s seat. Citizens George Leake was now President of the Student Council and was elected student of the month. Earl Clowney was again chosen student of the month, Tate, Smith, Shinholster, Leake, and Bridges walked off with E.I.A.C. honors, Richard Newby ' s name went down in the city record book as being the best speaker in the Junior Oratorical Contest, our blue ribbon Float and production of Slabtown Conven- tion were the talk of the town and our Junior-Senior Prom was the finest the state has ever known. As our city approached the fourth year of its existence, the same officers were re-elected. Progress was halted to salute citizens Peggy Mills as Miss Homecoming, Vilma Leake as attendant, and Grace Boyd attendant to Miss Living- stone. Citizens Newby and Beidleman well represented us as Student Council President and Vice-President, Clowney topped the dean ' s list again and was chosen Omega scholar of the year, Frances Payseur was elected state president of the F.T.A., and Boyd, Robinson, Butler, Bracy, and Green laid many floors in the sport ' s building. . , • City established — Construction completed — Citizenry molded — in the state of the old Black and Blue.
