THE 1956 LIVINGSTONIAN LIVINGSTONE COLLEGE SALISBURY, N. C. FOREWORD Like as the waves hasten to the pebbled shore, So do our minutes hasten to their end . . . And time that gave doth now his gift confound. The future lies before us as a challenge, the pre- sent yields to the past, and the past is but a memory. Yet the memory of the best years of our lives will for- ever remain unmarred by the passing of time. Though these years occupy but a few pages in the annual of history, they have undergirded us with principles and wisdom to march triumphantly through life. The mem- ory of these years shall always prove a balm to our wounded spirits. In these few pages is found a monument to the glo- rious days which we have spent here. When our mem- ories grow dim -with age, when our hearts become torn in the strife of life, when confusion surrounds us with an impenetrable cloak, then may this monument serve as a magic potion, bidding us return to these re- splendent years. DEDICATION It is now in retrospect that we, the Senior Class of 1956 think of our past experiences, and of one who has unselfishly, untiringly, and wholeheartedly devoted a great portion of his life to the advancement of our in- stitution. We think of one who has performed numerous tasks which are very necessary but which remain un- sung; one whose humor and cheerful countenance , whose willingness to extend a helping hand to anyone in need, and whose sophical advice have won the admiration, devotion and hearts of students as well as faculty mem- bers. As we, with eager yet timid anticipation, assume roles in our various life endeavors, we, the class of ' 56, wish to dedicate this small but symbolic offering of our most profound gratitude, this Livingstonian , to Mr. Isaac H. Miller. 3 ADMINISTRATION WILLIAM J. TRENT Pr esident EXECUTIVES MARLOWE F. SHUTE B.S., M.S., Ed.D. Dean of Adminislration FRANK R. BROWN A.B.. Jer. 15:9 To the memory of our beloved classmate, Jimmy Dean Rogers, we the Senior Class of ' 56, reverently dedicate this page. His sun set at noon, but not before the radiance of his personality could be treasured by all who knew him. The sun sets, but to rise again. 14 1955 OFFICERS SENIOR CLASS President . . . .Merilyn F. Gilmore Vice President . . .Lonnie A. Moose Secretary .... Priscilla Y. Malloy Treasurer Ella C. Ratcliff 1956 CLASS HISTORY From as far north as Massachusetts, as far west as Michigan and as far south as Florida we came to begin our sojourn beneath the beloved maples and oaks. Robert Milton held the president ' s rattle; Juanita Terry was hailed Freshman Queen, and reigned well during our infant year. As sophomores, after being formerly welcomed by our new president Smith Turner, we proved to be growing babes in the woods. We proudly boasted of having the highest number of students on the Dean ' s List. Juniors! A royal year it was with Gladys Stewart reigning as Miss Livingstone and Allie Dimery officiating as Miss Homecoming. T. Graham was prime minister. Sorrow was also ours to experience with the passing of our beloved classmate Jimmy Rogers. E.I.A.C. honors were awarded to guard Cameron Seay and quarterback Robert Milton. The French-accented Junior-Senior Prom, which displayed the art tal- ent of Cameron Seay. concluded a noble year. At last we arrived! President Gilmore performed well in leading the procession. Again our class served as campus nobility . Barbara Jami- sori was hailed Miss Livingstone and Constance Taylor ascended to Miss Homecoming ' s throne. Again E.I.A.C. recognition was given Cameron Seay and Robert Milton. The class of 56 passed this way only once, but our mark is firmly made. 15 18 19 21 22 23 24 25 President Lucy B. The Y.W.C.A., a sister organization to the Y.M.C.A. joins in the efforts to keep principles alive on the campus. Their concerted efforts play an important role in molding the character of those who journey here. 46 ORGANIZATIONS THE CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOR STAFF The Christian Endeavor Staff is the governing body of the Christian Endeavor Society, whose activities are an important element of campus religious life. THE SUNDAY — SCHOOL STAFF Sunday Schools are invaluable.
