Longfellow The class of 1954 has reached the final stage of educational training at Livingstone College. We stand ready to discharge our responsibilities as citizens. Our dear Alma Mater has given us the special equipment and the obligation to play an effective and productive role in society. This thor- ough preparedness warrants our deep gratitude and appreciation. We are proud to add the Livingstonian of ’54 to the tradition of the college. The photographs, class history, and superlatives herein tell the story of four years of accomplishments in our gayer hours. In this annual we have striven to preserve our pleasant memories so that when the past rises before us like a dream, the unforgettable years spent at Livingstone College will emerge panoramic in scope and bring a mist before our eyes. With a tinge of melancholy, we make this our last contribution to dear old Livingstone. May we thank the administration, faculty, and all others who have cooperated with us in helping to make our Livingstonian a success. Since we are departing now, we leave our annual as a reminder of our contributions and accomplishments with you, O Livingstone, my Livingstone! She has been firm, yet gentle in urg- ing us forward as mature individuals. Miss Smith has shared our many responsibilities and has diligently dele- gated to us those duties which we ourselves should perform. Therefore, with deep appreciation to one who has helped our class in every endeavor — the class of ’54 dedicates this annual. DEDICATED TO DR. W. J. We landed September, 1950, on the sandy shores of the Land of Knowledge — Livingstone College — one hundred and sixteen freshman tourists. Pre- pared for a four year educational tour through the cultural, intellectual, and religious land of Knowledge. As our journey began Darnell C. McCauley was elected spokesman for the first stage of our tour. Mrs. Anne Swanson Drew went along as the official guide through the Mire of Bewilderment at the Land of Knowledge. Our tour through the Mire was quite educational and challenging. We took time out to compete with other groups of tourists in the annual Home- coming Parade at the Land of Knowledge. One hundred and sixteen ingenious minds planned and decorated a first prize winning float, Just Hatched”. After gathering what knowledge we could in the Mire, we emerged with valor, determina- tion and confidence that we could wind our way through the Valley of Gradual Enlightenment, the second stop on our tour. We elected a new spokesman, John D. Hamlet. Mr. Luther Greene was the Land of Knowledge’s official guide through the Valley. We took part in the activities and made excellent contributions to the culture that we found here. Other tourists and natives watched us as we won recognition and admiration for our musical and sports talent, and high scholarship (Fannie Jones had maintained a straight A average). At the top of a hill surrounding the Valley, we viewed the lights from the Garden of Bright Outlook, and we hastened the third lap of our tour. Charles Gibbs was elected spokesman for this phase of the trip, and Miss Elnora Smith was official guide through the Garden. Our tour of the Garden was joyous and profitable. We made our largest financial contribution to Founder’s Day and entertained the graduating seniors at an elaborate Junior-Senior Prom. Decorated an- other prize winning float, Love Rules the World”, for the annual Homecoming Parade. Miss Nellie Massey represented us as Miss Homecoming of 1952. From the Garden of Bright Outlook, we could see the glittering and gleaming lights of the Isle of Eden on a distant hill. In our eagerness to complete our tour of the Isle, we kept our same spokesman and guide who had successfully steered us through the Garden. When we topped the hill and entered the Isle of Eden, we really excelled the other tourists. Our group was represented in the Homecoming Parade by Misses Alice Faggart, Jeanne Looney, and Naomi Scales. We were awarded a certificate for the best performance in the Inter-Class Night sponsored by the junior class. In sports Charles Gibbs captainted the football team to one of its most successful years. Gibbs and John Blalock were selected to the All-E.I.A.C. teams. Mary Wooten was captain of the girls basketball team, with teammates Jewel Witherspoon, Harriet Tillman, Georgia Boswell, Hazelene Burris, and Marian Brile comprising some of the best ball players on the team. John Blalock was captain of the boys basketball team. As we completed our tour of the Isle of Eden, we realized that our tour of the Land of Knowledge was over. At times it was rugged, trying, and joyous, but we stand now as proud tourists who have had a most successful tour. Our days were dark, but on we ran And did the best we knew to do. Ah, at times we smiled a while, Other things anticipated not, As the ship, the unseen isle — Things that counted, we’d forgot. That now a large river has been swum Or that a higher mountain climbed But speak of greater things to come, For minor ones are left behind ; Yes, we look ahead for that in store, The challenge beckons us ahead. We look not behind but on before, T o lift humanity from its bed. Yonder lies a great reward In doing what we like to do; We’ve looked ahead on our accord; Some falter note — but you? A brighter day is yours and mine. ’Tis to behold, someone has said, It’s the rainbow that will shine, If we bit now just look ahead.
