oreword Tiny oak and maple seeds were we — planted by the loving hands of earnest and hardworking parents. Afraid to near the surface of the earth because we did not know if we could equally accept the responsibilities of adulthood, we burrowed deeper into what was thought of as security. However, this security was false, and became visible in our various problems of maladjustment. Even with sunlight, rain and proper nutrition, we began to wither and die, despite the fact that we knew our destiny was to be of might and strength. But then came our Spring — and with it our awakening. Our buds be- gan to blossom into the promising golden color which symbolizes progress. And, with our awakening, we began to realize our importance as pillars of strength, and stopped to thank from the bottom of our new- lyborn souls the sincere parents who gave us the privilege of the ultimate aim of education. We became grate- ful to the teachers who had fed us with the richest food of knowledge, heated us with rays of understanding and showered us with the rain of Christian principles. So, since all strong forces leave their imprints on the sands of time as a guide, we the now mighty and victorious maples and oaks of 1953 — leave to you our imprints of progress as found in the pages of our annual, The Livingstonian. Thy dear old name we sing, While mem ' ries cluster thick and fast, And closer to us cling. Beneath thy maples and thy oaks The zephyred breezes blow, Just as they will in years to come, No matter where we go. Oh, Livingstone, my Livingstone! When thou art old with age, Perhaps thou too, shall hold a place That ' s bright on mem ' ry ' s page. And in thy sky, no cloud shall be — Instead, thy sun shall gleam, Prosperity shall live always Amid its golden beam. Oh, Livingstone, my Livingstone! Thy students come and go, The moments fly, the years go by With all their weal and woe. Along with fleet and nimble feet Oh, hasten on thy way, And fling the light of wisdom out Across the wand ' rer ' s way. Oh, Livingstone, my Livingstone! Upon thy campus wide, In numbers many students roam, Some from the other side; And still they love, we can but hope That they may e ' er be true To both thy name and colors too, The modest black and blue. Words by: W. F. Fonvielle Rapidly wending its way toward nonentity and obscurity were we, the Class of ' 53. Then Freshman and Sophomores, we were standing at the brink of our destruction, alone, unable to fathom the light of progress. At that darkest moment, a hand reached down and snatched us up, brushed the dirt from our garments and set us on the golden road to success. The flexible hand represented the elasticity of the personality of our rescuer. The arm of strength portrayed his innate power in reconstructing a mighty force from a weak smattering; the sturdy shoulders signified the capability of our rescuer to bear our burdens uncomplainingly and competently. MR. JOHN H. BROCKET!, JR. One of the reasons for our deliverer ' s strength results from his educational training and experiences. Being a graduate of Livingstone College, obtaining a M. S. degree from the Uni- versity of Pennsylvania, directing a city recreation center, serving as company commander with the rank of captain in the Pacific as well as holding the position of Administrative Dean at Palmer Memorial Institute, Sedalia, North Carolina, have all helped to forcibly mold the per- sonality of the man who so willingly dispelled his strength of character to us. Now, as the film is clearing from our eyes, we see ourselves as renewed and whole human beings who have sacrificed for a just cause, and have chosen the better means to an ultimate end. As we glimpse the golden road ahead, we gratefully thank our advisor and friend, and humbly dedicate The 1953 Livingstonian to Mr. John H. Brockett, Jr. ■■■■■naHMnMinBnHninMHMni Our President - DR. THE LIVINGSTONE DERBY Freshman year always reminds me of the first day of a race, with all of the eager, vigorous freshmen beginning their four-year trial, their race for knowledge and for social recognition. Our race began in September, 1949, when one hundred and forty-one neophytes assembled at the big track, Livingstone College. Some were proud and pranced about, while others were shy, frightened and embarrassed by the host of spectators. Many were not ready to break the strong home tie or to leave the parental stable. They could scarcely stand on their wobbly legs, and we paused to wonder how they would survive. One of the first trainers with whom we came in contact was Mrs. Anne Swanson Drew, our advisor, who strove to encourage us. We trotted along slowly, displaying our first talent at the annual Freshman Talent Show. The first prize was given us for showing on Illumination Night. Our reward was a huge picnic, where for a brief period, we forgot our academic aims in a gay pursuit for entertainment. Our Sophomore year began the next lap in the race with only one hundred and eight competing. We changed trainers this year, and Mrs. Florence Mitchell and Mr. Leon McCrary did their share in molding and guiding us. This year found us a little more advanced. Certain comrades sprang ahead showing great potentialities, and lead- ership ability. Maryjane Williams, a roily polly, little filly was class president. Hattie Savage, Tina Jones, Beatrice Frye, Mary Miller gained recognition in basketball. El- wood Massey, Neville Tucker, Eugene Hobson, Richard and Charles Sherrill carried us to fame in boys basketball, while Arthur Pemberton, Maurice Marsh, Richard Harris and Carl Harris carried the pig skin over the goal post. Stopping again for a bit of social life we gave our Backward Dance in Trent Gymnasium. T u- 1 0 ; 8 , th ° Se Wh ° df °P alon « the wa y si de. Tina Jones and Beatrice Frye, finished with their duties in the Physical Education Center at Livingstone, are relaxing in the English room and talking with those learned English professors, Ruth Gray, Ella Hargett, Martha Person, Johnnie White, Elizabeth Spencer and Gladys Hunter, that distinguished history teacher, Katie Foy, and those noted shorthand teachers, Rutha Dixson, Minnie Mitchell and Hattie Savage. Ooh, I can ' t stand these kids a minute longer, murmurs Tina, If I don ' t get away from them for a little while I think I ' ll go berserk. I feel exactly the same way, Bea replies. I ' ll tell you what we could do, let ' s take my private helicopter and go around the country visiting all our old classmates. It only takes a minute to tell the president, Richard Harris, of their decision , and then they climb into the luxurious plane, push a button and are on their way. They decide to head for San Francisco and enter Allen ' s Restaurant owned by William Allen. Its roof is crowded with airplanes and it takes all of Bea ' s skill to land. The lines of people outside contain many familiar faces, among whom are those of Ruth Murray, and Jessie Bouleware, noted laboratory technicians. Willie Clifton, a successful teacher, brings up the rear as usual. After sitting around and eating delicious food, ' Bea and Tina decide to leave in order to get a room for the night. On the way they stop in George Hill ' s drugstore for a cup of coffee and buy the Atomic Herald. They see that the newspaper is edited by those famous journalists, Mary White and Maxine Ormond. After putting their airplane in a hangar at the airport, they register at the Washington Hotel, and have no difficulty getting a room because they know the owner, Willie J. Washington. The hotel beds in their beautiful, ultra-modern rooms are so soft that they cannot fall asleep, so they switch on television in the room and recognize the face of Perry Leazer, the only disc jockey in the world who uses Feet-o-matic record changers. After the television program goes off, Tina picks up the Atomic Herald. This is what she reads, Neville M. Tucker Recently Admitted to National Bar Association.
