I III I5 si' ,lil We gratefully dedicate this, the Livingstonian of 1951, to our beloved Physical Education teacher, Miss Gale, Due to her friendly nature toward everyone, she has become one of our most loved teach- ers. We now say, Thank you, Miss Gale. L E I je jacugg ana! .xdclminiafrafio MR. R. W. LYON Principal IIIIII 'xxxkix' Our founding fathers, during the time that they were deciding the basis of the government of our young nation, wisely decided that ours should be a government of, by and for the people. They also concluded that, in order to have government by the people, it was essential that the voters should be educated, wise and informed. Thus was the idea of our educational systemborn. In order to have a strong govern- ment it was necessary to have a strong educational system. Now, over one and one half centuries later, we find our school system strong, vigorous and unique among nations. Our country has more people going to school for more years than any other. This is the foundation of a democracy, and certainly our democracy must have afirm foundation which mustbe strong and active in these years. Our school is proud to be part of such an educational system. This year we are using our two new buildings for the first time. Classes in these buildings round our curriculum in the vocational and avocational direction. It is in these new buildings, as well as the others, that we hope to train young citizens who are informed, capable and healthy in mind and body. aue Lagoa! 1,45 in our growfd av ave STROI ----r ADELLA BARNARD Commercial CHARLES BLACKWELL Wood Work Physical Educ ation BARBARA BR OWN Home Economic s HAMLIN BROWN Agriculture ESTHER BR UNETTE Journalism English STANLEY CAPLAN English, Speech C. Each year the Latin Club sponsors suchabanquet. The students and faculty members that attend must be dressed as afamous Roman, or as agod or goddess. The food is typical of Roman times and is served by slaves. Also many of the Roman superstitions and customs are ob- served. The Latin Club is affiliated With the Junior Classical League Whichis a national organization of students enrolled in Latin. New members are initiated by a candle- light ceremony in which they repeat the pledge to hand on the torch of classical civilization to the modern world. Among the achievements the year of 1950-1951 held in store for the teams of I... H, S. were the knowledge , training and experience that are very much needed for a better understanding of sportsmanship and courage. Although this year's football men did not win all their games, they did bring together some new outside teams that we hope may be continued on future schedules. The team this year won a powerful victory from Hollister in a pre- season practice game and also tied a powerful Coalinga eleven. In basketball the Wolves had one of the largest turnouts that has ever been produced in L.H. S. The team won a good percentage of their games and finished fourth in a ve ry strong Valley Oak League. This year also produced something new in the baseball department. Instead of the B team, Coach Elam took over the Junior Varsity squad which travels along with the Varsity and plays other J. V. teams. This new system is giving the chance that is needed to encourage better ballplayers who will make up the future Varsity teams. 64 ROW I, LEFT TO RIGHT: C. Casey, B. Lawrence, B. Dusin, D. McNabb, F, Walters, The Wolves breezed through 1950-51 basketball season with a fair record of 12 wins and 14 defeats, Having a record of 41 wins and six de- feats in League play, they managed to take fourth spot in a league with such potent teams as Tracy, Ceres, and Oakdale, The team entered the annual Gustine Tour- nament early in the season came out with a record of one win and one loss, losing out to Patterson in the semi-finals, Pro- bably the most important player in the Wolves lineup this year was, All-Star Center, Richard Picton. Picton ended his last year with the team by scoring a total of 320 points. This has beenhis third year with the Varsity, playing only one year with the B te am. This year he was mentioned on the Z0f3O Club's All-Tourney Five at the Gustine Tournament and received a small medal for his feats. Another star on this years squad was play-maker Forward, Bill Pickle. Pickle is another Senior and has played his last year on the Varsity. Bill has always been a consistent scorer ever since he first started basketball, The most impressive proof of this is when he scored the amazing total of 41 points in one game as a B player. He has always been a high scorer and when he didn't take the scoring honors he was always right behind the person who did. Members of the first string who will be returning next year are: Guard, Sandy Garcia, F o rward , Wilbur Ratzlaffg and Forward, Windel Pressley. The Pups had afairly successful season this year and will be gaining experience and knowledge for next year's power- packed squad. The team started off well in the first half of the season, going through the league with only one loss. The second half of the season proved disastrous, however, as the pups managed to win onlya few of their games from much improved squads, The most important player on this year's team was a fiery little forward Jerry Gebbie. Gebbie led the team in th scoring department most of the time ar lead them also in morale support. He is senior this year and will be ending hi sports career in June. Also on this year's squad were th following fellows who helped all through th season: Rodger Fox, Vic Maldonado, Fre Virgo, Jim Ratzlaff, and another senior Dan Wilkinson. ROW I, LEFT TO RIGHT: B. Why was he afraid to go into his own darkroom, you ask? He was afraid. that he might have to make a cut for the L.ivingstonian that would have your gruesome physiognomy in it. You'd be afraid, too! Now, though, Mr. Walter can have some peace.
