Later on in the year we wel- comed Robert Jones to our starting class, At first we were rather bashful and meek and our superiors ignored us for they knew we were just green freshmen. If you happen to see someone carrying an armful of books and looking in at every door, that was just a Freshie searching for his right classroom. Our first big social event was the Initiation Party, During the day, the girls wore boy's jeans and shirts while the boys had to wear dresses inside out and back- wards. Members of the Student Council had made green hats for us to wear and of course we were painted up like Indians. When the fateful night arrived we were taken to the gym and each one had their turn getting the nworks.n Luckily we all survived but through no fault of the upper classmen. We want to congratulate one of our classmates, Cath- erine Weber on her winning a contest on conservation. With the help of Miss Stiritz, she composed an essay on nwhy Conservation of our National Resources Should Be Taught in School.W For writing the best essay she was awarded an All Expense-Paid trip to Chicago. Along with five other regional winners they were entertained by be ing taken to Chicago's scenic spots over the week end Sunday they visited the Outdoor Sport Show at Navy Pier Here Catherine was chosen and crowned Queen of Queens for having written the best essay out of the six winners from among BOOO which were originally submitted She received a beautiful crown and trophy We are very proud of Robert Malench and Richard San drin both of whom made the first twelve in basketball At our first class meeting we elected the following officers for our freshmen year President Richard Sandrin Vice President Pobert Malench Secretary Maridel Nixon Treasurer Leona Krivan Sponsors Miss Smith Miss Stiritz Maridel Nixon and Robert Malench were chosen class reporters on the Eaglet Staff For representation on the Student Council we elected Leona Krivan and Bob Malench Class Flower White Rose Class Colors Blue and White Class Motto Upward Striving an ' 0 I n o 5 o o Q ease.. some .oo ogg n neue- .gg use ease ooonsoueeoeoeosuaooeoeoo seasonal! e o -1.-1 - .. 11 -ii -V, Q ,Y,,,,vV:1, ,,,.,.,,f-...7,:-,l, H -V, -T,., ,,--..-... -., -......s....-..,--,.....-.-,.,Q-NewY---W...fw A-JAQUIULBQ Y i f HHW ll 'Fkrg 4 U ,' P 1 M' A - If lg . qi ,. S. This year we have had the extreme pleasure of having many in- teresting speakers come to our school and lecture to us. I am sure each of us will remember Mr. Dittmore, an ex-convict, who talked to us on the subject of Wcr1me.' He stressed that education and religion are the best weapons with which to fight crime. A talk was also given to the students by Dr. Hawkins of Shurt- leff College. He talked about many famous people such as Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone, 'Thomas Alva Edison, and John Burroughs. On the following day, Mr. Ziegel from Eastern State Teachers College, Charleston, Illinois, spoke to the seniors about college life and answered questions that were asked by the students. On December 14, we were given a band concert by the McCray-Do- wey Township High School, of Troy, Illinois under the direction of Louis Philippe. I I I e e Q so I I I I l-5 Since the autumn of 1946, there has been a concerted effort to u ite the alumni of L.C.H.S. into a functional organization for the purposes of fostering a closer relationship between the schools and its alumni, providing a means for keeping members of the classes in contact with one another, and bringing together the classes for re- unions at regular intervals. The initial program of the organization, directed primarily by A. W. Perne, and D. Covi, with the assistance of A. Farhat, E. Lib- gra, F. Perne, V. Balen, L. Moggio, B. Kopuster, J. Lusiana, B. Dal- pazzo, and F. Augustine, included the formulation of the constitu- tion and by-laws. The constitution was formally adopted by a vote at the first annual meeting at the high school on December 28, 1947. The officers elected were: J. Lusiana '28, President, F. Perne '35, V1ce-Pres- ident, G. Brun '45, Secretary, W. Hancock '47, Treasurer, F. Augus- tine, '45, Historian, and A. W. Perne, '27, Advisory. The proposed plans for the following year were to increase active membership, to foster an alumni play night, and to prepare a plan for awarding an annual scholarship to one member of the graduating class. As a result of these early efforts, the Alumni Association has acquired a substantial treasury which has served to pay for regular members' subscription to the 'Eaglet' for the past two years. In addition, the organization treasury has provided initial capital for certain group functions, such as the scheduled reunion banquet the Class of '39, to be held this year, under the chairmanship f Helen Zarr The class of 1947 held their reunion during the 1947 Homecoming Over half the class and their husbands and wives attended the first reunion of any of the L C H S alumni The officers of the class of '37 were President A Renner, who was unable to attend and was re placed by his wife, Sophia, Vice President J Britt Buehling, Sec retary S Karnosky, who was not present, and Treasurer V Paulicka Balen, ho acted as mistress of ceremonies The business meeting took place after a sumptuous dinner 'Re member Way Back When?' was the theme of several speeches and recall ed memories for everyone A letter from Mr Mays, who was principal when the class graduated and who now resides at Dixon, Illinois, was read Class members reminisced about their doings of the past ten years E Kieffer, E Sandrin, 0 Spagnola, and A Simonek were cho- sen to plan the next reunion to be held in 1952 V Balen, and E Becker Moggio of Livingston, and M Komanecky Stanhaus and S Hoggio Benner of Chicago were on the committee that managed to make this first reunion a success Alumni who were enrolled in colleges during the past year were H Van Hooser '38, Univ of Denver, D Covi, '59, Univ f Iowa, J Semanek '40 North Eastern Missouri Teachers' College, 0 Kreuter '40, Eastern Illinois State College, J King '45 Knox College, Bowles '43, Univ of Missouri, H Malench '44, St Louis Univ Pedrotti '45, R Bowles '46, F Dumont, '47, G Sawchak '48, J Spu dich '48, V Pedrotti, '48, G Spudich '45, and J Hancock '48, Nor mal University, J Dudley '45, Shurtleff College, W Augustine, '47 Univ of Missouri, and D Everts '48, Lake Forest College The following attended the University of Illinois A W Perne '27, A Graiff '28, W Schuette '40, J Scanavino '59, C Ondes '40, E Basol '40, T Karnosky '44, R Rochelli '40, and B Staiser Kar nosky, B Wall '52, Muir College, Pasadena, California, F Bausch Perne, '55, C Rachaw Loeh, '55, E Sandrin '47, and L Dudley '47 Shurtleff College, E Knezik Hansen '42, University of Wisconsin, F lilchalic '46 and M Ondes '47, Rankin Trade School, St Louis, and D Zarr '47, De Paul University !
