SOCIAL STUDIES U.S. History I, which ranges from the Period of Discovery through Reconstruction, is the first of two courses taken by the entire student body. U.S. History Il, which follows, begins in 1877 and progresses through the present day. The majority of U.S. History ll classes are taught using the team method by Mr. Shields and Mr. Cooney, while the remainder of the seniors have one teacher throughout the entire year. Although both of these courses stress America's past, great emphasis is also placed on contemporary issues. Recent problems have been discussed by several political speakers at LHS. Among these speakers were Assemblywoman Jane Burgio and Assembly Can- didate Jim Bildner, both of whom have spoken on matters of current interest. Other parts of the world are explored through various course offerings. Modern European History is a full year course explor- ing Europe, while History of Russia and Far Eastern Survey, both half-year courses, expose the student to the East. Other offer- ings such as Sociology, Economics, and Cultural Anthropology explain the way people live. Psychlogy adds another dimension to the already multi-faceted department by focusing on the individual's reactions to various events. This year, two experimental honors courses, U.S. I taught by Dr. Riley, and Modern European History taught by Mr. Ranseg- nola, were instituted by Mr. Ostrin. In addition, the department offers U.S. History l A.P. and U.S. History ll A.P. for students with a greater interest in history. As a result of its diverse offerings, the Social Studies depart- ment is able to provide students with a better understanding of man and his world. I MR. STEPHEN GILLOCK MR. EDWARD HILL MR.
