'GIRLS SOFTBALL SEEKS IMPROVED SEASON The 1980 girl's softball team expects to improve upon last year's disappointing record of 1-16-1. Coach Ransegnola attributes his optimism for a bet- ter season to experience and the acquisition of a pitching machine. All but two starters will be returning from last year's squad including three year veterans Barbara Oelz, Mary Ellen Joyce, and Karen Turi. Turi has displayed some fine fielding ability at third base. Also returning are seniors Alyse Hirschhorn, Cheri Wein- stein, Caren Holtzman, Fran Egnezzo, and Sue Gro- howski. Grohowski batted clean up last year and will be counted on for many key hits along with Oelz and Joyce. Junior Fran Miller is an outstanding short- stop and will be a big hitting threat as well. Other juniors showing promise are Many Hawk, Linda Hol- land, and Beth Cacossa. Coach Ransegnola feels the new pitching machine will be a big help improving the batters' timing and coordination. lt will be an asset when the girls have to face the tough pitchers of the lron Hills Confer- ence. Sue Grohowski takes a lead off first base. 0914! fl ' t Coach Ransegnola gives some batting tips to Mary Ellen Joyce. Alyse Hirschhorn delivers her pitch. I GIRLS VOLLEYBALL BEGINS FIRST SEASON I wi A 1980 will be the first year Livingston High School will have a girls' volleyball team. The squad will be coached by Miss Alice Caskey who is chairperson of the New Jersey Top Ten Volleyball Committee. Coach Caskey says the team is working hard and shows a lot of potential. The Lancer girls will make up one of four new teams in the spring volleyball season. Senior players include Elena Vidal, Lyn Gir- one, Kim McDermott, Jenise Geannakakes and Leah Finkel. Coach Caskey expects juniors Mary Jo McHugh and Shari Berke will be great assets to the team: the coach also anticipates a strong showing from Mary Beth Picini, Beth Cacossa and Trish Bilby. The team's main emphasis will be on defense. Miss Caskey feels if the team can receive and serve well, they will be able to force errors or cause the opposition to make offensive mistakes. With this strategy, Coach Caskey believes the girls will do very well and possibly achieve a state ranking in volleyball. 1 - -, 'U , .J .
