LANCERS NET A VICTGRIOUS 1980 SEASON The boy's basketball team had a fine 1979-80 season. Coached by Mr. AI Maranz, the boys pulled off some surprising upsets and won the first place trophy in the Holiday Tournament. Forward co-captain Har- lan Coben finished a three year varsity career leading his team to a 17- 8 record. Senior center Scott Parsons and junior forward Steve Pontia- kos provided the height and skill necessary to control the backboards. Jeff Mitnick and George Alpert at guards positions rounded off the starting five. Mitnick's pinpoint passes made him an effective play- maker, while Alpert's clutch shooting was the key to many victories. The team was hindered by injuries throughout the season. As a result, the depth of the bench proved to be vital to the team's success. Co- captain Pete Appel's fine ball handling and outside shooting was a great asset. Senior Wayne Tunis and junior Dave Peck proved invaluable. Steve Jacobson, Bruce Eatroff and Steve Fleisher also saw plenty of action. The boys finished third in the Iron Hills Conference behind strong Columbia and Morristown teams. Their fine record qualified them for the Essex County and State Tournaments. Exceptionally fine ball play- ing was displayed in both tourney's. The team improved tremendously over last year's record. Although Coach Maranz will lose the many strong senior players on his squad, he expects a successful season from his '80-81 players. Junior George AIpert's accurate shoot- ing was a great asset to the team. 1979-80 Boys' Basketball Season Team Llv. GRAPPLERS SCORE WITH INDIVIDUAL RECORDS The Lancer wrestling team completed their 1980 season with a 4-11 record. This losing re- cord, however, was not indicative of the grappler's achievements. Under Coach Valentine, the team lost five matches by five points or less and, in addition, won the last three matches of the season. Highlighting the year were the Lanc- er's fifth place finishes in the Seton Hall, Dover, and District Tournaments. Outstanding individual records characterized the Lancer season. Co-captain Mark Friedman 11015 compiled a 15-9 record and placed second in the Seton Hall Tournament. Mark holds the record for wrestling in 42 consecutive dual matches. At 170, co-captain Frank MacArthur compiled a 17-3-1 record, placing first in the Se- ton Hall Tourney, second at Dover and third in the Districts. Leading the Lancers, senior Harry Neu- gold had the most outstanding record on the team 121-45. Harry holds the team record for pins 185 and most team points 1705. Other record hold- ers were seniors David Fisher 11485 who recorded the most escapes 1115, and Jeff Pichat 11295 who holds the team record for the most reversals 1145. Heavyweight senior Dan Danckwerth, one of the Lancer's superb individual performers, re- Harry Neugold took first place in the Seton Hall and Dover Tourneys and second place in the Districts. corded a 10-5 record and, in addition, amazed the fans and his teammates with the fastest pin of the year at 42 seconds. The underclassmen further exhibited the Lancer strength. Junior Steve Molinaro 11085 with a 19-7-1 record took first place in the Dover Tourney and the Regions. Steve has the honor of being only the second wrestler from Livingston to win first place in the Regionals. Jon Taylor 11585, a junior, should also lead the 1981 wrestlers. Jon's second place finish in the Dover Tournament demonstrated his fine skill. Certainly, graduating seniors Friedman, MacArthur, Neugold, Fisher, Pichat and Danckwerth will be missed greatly, but Coach Valentine hopes the team will see improvement, and experience a fine 1981 SGSSOTI. Get psyched, Lancers!!!
