LANCER SOCCER: A HEARTBREAKING SEASON The 1979 Lancer Soccer team, coached by Mr. Paul Swenson, finished the season with a record of 10-7-2. The potential for success was great however the Lancers' inability to come from behind resulted in a frustrating, though winning season. Strong potential was evident as the Lancers continually out- shot their opponents, but their inability to convert these opportu- nities resulted in deficits. The most disheartening losses occurred in the quarterfinals of the Essex County Tournament and in the State Tournament. ln the County Tournament against a tough Verona team, a scoreless game resulted in a suspense filled tie- breaker shootout. The Lancers' valiant efforts were frustrated as Verona edged past to defeat them. Int he State Tournament the Lancers provided sharp competition to a fine Westfield team before being defeated by a 3-2 score. The season finale was indicative of a well-played season which came close to success. The Lancers were led offensively by veteran seniors Jack Guer- rieri, John Bailey and Bob Miseo. Their experience and speed proved instrumental in Lancer performances. Wingers Dave Spie- Steve Glassman played well for the Lancers. gel and Bob Brenner also aided the team. The superb skill of David Fisher, Dave Andreason, Rob Clarkson and Scott Whitman provided the Lancers with a formidable line. A strong defense halted Lancer opponents. With Larry Gerson and Steve Litvak protecting the goal, the Lancers turned back many scoring drives. Seniors Howard Koval, Jack Rosenbloom and Pete Courter played spectacularly on defense, as did sweep- er Steven Glassman. . Although the upperclassmen provided necessary experience, a large part of the Lancer strength came from the efforts and determination of the team's juniors. Juniors Todd Silverberg and Mike Friedin sparked the offense, continually baffling the oppo- nents defense. Midfielder Doug Burns and Ralph Spagnola pro- vided the Lancers with agility and quickness. Defensively, the superb quality of performances from centerback Eric Friedland and fullback Scott Johnson were vital to the team. With the determination and cooperation exhibited by the underclassmen, next year's team can anticipate a championship campaign in the fail. i l Larry Gerson makes another fine save. LANCERS NET A VICTGRIOUS 1980 SEASON The boy's basketball team had a fine 1979-80 season. Coached by Mr. AI Maranz, the boys pulled off some surprising upsets and won the first place trophy in the Holiday Tournament. Forward co-captain Har- lan Coben finished a three year varsity career leading his team to a 17- 8 record. Senior center Scott Parsons and junior forward Steve Pontia- kos provided the height and skill necessary to control the backboards. Jeff Mitnick and George Alpert at guards positions rounded off the starting five. Mitnick's pinpoint passes made him an effective play- maker, while Alpert's clutch shooting was the key to many victories. The team was hindered by injuries throughout the season. As a result, the depth of the bench proved to be vital to the team's success. Co- captain Pete Appel's fine ball handling and outside shooting was a great asset. Senior Wayne Tunis and junior Dave Peck proved invaluable. Steve Jacobson, Bruce Eatroff and Steve Fleisher also saw plenty of action. The boys finished third in the Iron Hills Conference behind strong Columbia and Morristown teams. Their fine record qualified them for the Essex County and State Tournaments. Exceptionally fine ball play- ing was displayed in both tourney's. The team improved tremendously over last year's record. Although Coach Maranz will lose the many strong senior players on his squad, he expects a successful season from his '80-81 players. Junior George AIpert's accurate shoot- ing was a great asset to the team. 1979-80 Boys' Basketball Season Team Llv.
