FIELD HOCKEY ON THE UPSWING The field hockey team performed well after a slow start in 1979. The girls finished the season with an overall record of 5-6- 6 including some impressive play in the Essex County tourna- ment. Coach Pam Clause claims the team got off to a disap- pointing start. At the opening of the season, the girls played without seven starters. Coach Clause said the team was plagued by the inconsistency and scoring difficulties. Also, the demand- ing schedule called for the girls to compete against some of the top teams in the state. Despite this, the coach said the team showed tremendous improvement by the end of the season and is right on the brink of being really good. The team was led by senior tri-captains Jill Smith, Leah Finkel, and Tracy Cole. Jill and Leah were forwards, and Leah, along with sophomore Debbie Siegel, was named to the second team All Essex. Other offensive players included seniors Melina Mari- tato, Nancy Cushman, and Dana Maranz. Juniors Shari Berke, Beth Cacossa, Joyce Zelkowitz and Fran Miller also saw action. Tracey Cole finished her third varsity season as goaltender for the team with 107 saves. With her on defense were seniors Kim McDermott and Cheri Weinstein at fullback, and Karen Turi at Sweeper. Underclassmen on defense were Abby Schwartz and Lisa Fellman. The girls worked well as a team and utilized a variety of unique psyche-up methods. Coach Clause enjoyed coaching them and looks forward to more success in the future, Forward Leah Finkel outmaneuvers her opponent. Coach Pam Clause discusses strategy with her team.
