GIRLS' TENNIS TEAM NETS CONFERENCE TITLE Despite a variety of trying circumstances, the girls' tennis team excelled in its 1979 season. The team was plagued by injury and illness, which meant con- stant shifts in the line-up were inevitable. Despite the instability, the team held together to win the Iron Hills Conference championship and advanced to the state sectional finals. Coach Dan Weidner attributes the team's success in the face of adversity to the girls' fierce competitive spirit. He cites evidence from many matches in which a girl would lose the first set and rally to win the next two and clinch a team victory. This determination, according to Dr. Weidner was the key to many victo- ries, including crucial wins over perennial tennis pow- er houses, Columbia and West Essex. The girls also received post season recognition: the team had an overall record of 19 and 5 and was ranked eleventh in the state and second in Essex County. In addition, the first doubles team of Chris Stoll and Caren Holtzman -n First singles star Felice Zinn will continue her winning ways next year. were named to the third team All State CGroup IVJ The second doubles team was also an important factor in the team's excellent record. Seniors Mary Ellen Joyce and Nancy Goret were paired together for most of the season but due to injuries Marge Landau and Ellen Krupat also saw action. The singles positions were held down by junior Felice Zinn and seniors Wendi Blau and Anne Stewart respectively. Felice showed a lot of potential and will be counted on heavily next year. Blau and Stewart were four year veterans whose experience played an important role in the team's success. Junior Amy Levine and fresh- man Krista Gugliemi also saw varsity action and will be depended upon for a strong showing in the 1980 season. As a result of fine coaching and determination, Dr. Weidner's girl's tennis team triumphed. The girls pulled together to defeat some of the top teams in the state and captured the lron Hills Conference title. Caren Holtzman played well at the first doubles position.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY GETS OFF TO A The Livingston High School sports program was expanded to include a girls' cross country team for the fall season. The team was coached by girls' track coach, Mr. Charles Berry. Despite the small number of girls on the squad, the team finished with a winning record of 7-3 and placed third in the conference. The team was led by seniors Kathy McNally, Terry Le- vine, and Sue Brower. There were also two underclassmen, Eileen Lar- ney and Joanne Dougherty. All com- peted in the tough Iron Hills meets with winning results. Coach Berry feels the team did extremely well in their first season. He hopes to expand the squad and continue his winning ways in future cross country seasons. Junior Jeannie Daugherty ran well for the new Lancer team. Coach Berry and Terri Levine check times. race.
