LANCERS TRAVEL T0 PLAYOFFS IN GIANTS STADIUIVI! The Livingston football team enjoyed one of its most successful seasons ever in 1979. The Lancers went undefeated in conference play and travelled to Giants Stadium for the championship of the state playoffs. At season's end, the team was ranked first in Essex County and seventh in the state by the Newark Star- Ledger. The Lancers opened the season under the lights against a huge Belleville squad. The team was served a disappointing loss and the hopes of a successful season seemed improbable. The Lancers, however, quickly rebounded with an explosive victory over Mountain. The game was a display of the superb running abilities of All-County senior halfback and Co-captain Greg Wickner along with the precision passing of All-State junior quarterback Stan Yagiello. ln the following game against Morristown, senior co-captain Mike Braun led the defense from his linebacker position and was largely responsible for the victory. The Lancers continued on a winning streak as the players realized their full potential. After winning the rest of their games, the Livingston squad received a bid to play in the state tournament. The first game against highly rated Westfield was a magnificent display of talent and hustle. The Lancers ended up on top 38-20 in a surprise romp at Giants Stadium. Two weeks later, again at the Meadowlands, the football team was vying for the state championship title against Union. The Lancers played their hearts out but were unable to capture the crown in the grueling battle. Livingston did, however, play a very impressive game as they had done consistently all season long. All-County center Harry Neugold anchored the strong offensive line which consisted of senior tackles Rick Sules, Mitch Burner and Dan Danckwerth and junior guards Mike Genovese and Ron Maier. Although consistently outweighed, the line gave Yagiello plenty of time to throw to senior tight end Lou Belardo or All-County junior end George Alpert. Coming out of the backfield for passes were seniors Mike Inga, playing wingback, and fullback Bill Giuliano who was also a vital part of the Lancer running game. Filling in for the backs and returning punts was the hustling Bob Barbella. Throughout the season, the Lancer defense continued to gain respect as a hard-hitting aggressive squad. In the middle of the line were the tough pair of seniors John lmgrund and Frank MacArthur. Alternating at defensive tackle were the massive trio of Dave Pecora, Charlie Clark and Greg Giroux. The intimidating ends, junior John Taylor and All-County Mike Braun combined with powerful senior linebackers Vinnie Russo and Darren Nacht to form a tight defense. intercepting and breaking up many passes were senior deep backs Mike Neary and Jim Wright along with junior Steve Pontiakos. Senior Scott Parsons, a first season player for the Lancers, was an important asset as kicker and punter. Injured in an early scrimmage, senior Scott Moran was sidelined for most of the season, but constantly supported the team. It was a truly triumphant season for the Lancers as five players made All-County and three made All- Group IV. Junior George Alpert was named to the second team All-State, while junior Stan Yagiello made the prestigious first team All-State. Coach Al Jacobson, completing his 22nd season at L.H.S., was named N.J. Coach of the Year by the Newark Star-Ledger. The 1979 Livingston football team instilled a spirit of pride throughout the school and its community. The enthusiasm and support of the fans was a great part of the Lancer's success. As the talented underclass- men return next year, the team should achieve their goal of a victorious season which has become a Lancer tradition. Chg H' 1' ..,'?S,. Qld...
