The reason for this sustained and widespread popularity is its broad and diversified cur- riculum, most of which is of a practical nature. The basic idea of these courses, among them Wood Works, Auto Shop, Drafting and Electronics, is to instruct the LHS stu- dent inthe skills and techniques of that area and hovv they can be put to a practical use. Foreign Language Today's world is becoming increasingly smaller, due to more advanced communications and svvifter modes of travel. In such a shrinking vvorld, the knowledge of foreign cultures and languages becomes even more important. The Foreign Language Department at Livingston High School concentrates on teaching the student not only grammar and pronunciation, but also about the culture and history of the country in which the language is spoken. This type of learning aids all foreign language students at Livingston, vvho are fortunate enough to visit a country where their language is spoken, to adjust to a different way of life. Presently, the department offers courses in French, Ger- man, ltalian and Spanish, as well as advanced placement French and Spanish, for those students vvho wish to take a fifth year of a language, as a college level course. Most LHS'ers have taken at least one course in a foreign lan- guage. The study of a foreign language and culture is a vital part of Livingston High School's curriculum, since it helps prepare the students for an experience in the world beyond high school and the American culture.
