Our class has a history which is spread over a period of four years. Let us think of our class as a bridge with four planks, each plank representing a year of our high school history - freshman plank, sophomore plank, junior plank, and senior plank. We have bridged the years with glorious, noble, and daring deeds which make our bridge strong with planks of achievement. I would like to present to you those four sturdy planks. When the freshmen, forty-five in number, came to high school from different localities in August, 1953, they brought along their plank. It so happened that all they could find to start building a bridge was a green plank. This plank was long and broad and green to its core. It soon showed signs of warping under the heat tumed on it by the sophomores. The teachers put on this green plank, pressure with their rounds of study. Poor plank, it was whittled down to fit into the bridge: however, it took its seasoning well and soon began showing signs of talent. It was a hard journey, but most of us made it safely under the direction of our sponsor Miss Hicks. The second year the class with their rosy pink plank came ready for a gay time. We now have thirty- nine members, losing six and gaining two. There was nothing warped about this plankg it was properly seasoned for all the sophomore activities in sports and in scholarship. In the spring our class enjoyed a trip to Kentucky Lake under the direction of our sponsor Miss Anne Calhoun. During this year, Kitty Burden was elected cheerleader and she has been re-elected as cheerleader each year. How happy were the golden plank days of the junior class! This class was a shining light in all the school activities, and an excellent lamp even for the teachers to use to teach the lower classmen. We had thirty-seven members with Mr. Carlton Inglis as our sponsor. On March 30, 1956, we gave our junior play MUMBO JUMBO which proved to be quite a success. Of course the junior-senior trip that year was the grandest plank of all the year. Both juniors and seniors enjoyed Lookout Mountain on May ll, 1956. The bridge was not yet completed: the senior class had not laid its distinguished plank on the bridge of history. Our senior plank was the symbol of dignity and glory, the purple sign of royalty and fame. You may be sure that this plank showed signs of culture and training. On April 5, 1957, under the direction of our sponsors Mrs. Arthur Greenwalt and Mr. L. D. Knight, we gave our senior play EVERYTHING HAPPENS TO US. Another enjoyable highlight was Senior Day at Western State College. Accompanied by our sponsors, we journeyed to Bowling Green on May 3, 1957, for this event. We have been unfortunate in our selection of sponsors. Miss Amber Henton who started us out on our senior year, resigned in December to take a job with the Federal Government. Mr. 7 Gerald Buxton was our sponsor for a few months, but he resigned to take a job in California. We chose Mr. Knight and Mrs. Greenwalt to guide us through the remainder of our senior year. On May 13, 1957, the junior class, under the direction of Miss Lenora Hicks, took us on a tour of Nashville, Tennessee. We saw the State Capital, the museum, the Parthenon, and the Hermitage. , ., ,rfwm-wwsfiwr-mvfwfanfrwwswwvsre.EAWFSWWXWWSBF i' ,4 if RICHARD L.
