Independent Study Developes Creativity The independent study program this year at Livermore High has been expanded to allow more students to pursue their special interests. Each student turns in a plan of work to the teacher that he wishes to study under. ln the English department there are twenty-four students working on individual projects. One of the more popular projects is film making. Veterans of the film class are continuing their explorations in this field, Others are doing research in literature or creative vvriting, Those taking independent study in the social studies department do research for papers on the histories of certain laws or comparing economic systems. The students are graded by their supervising teachers according to their accomplishments. Scholastic Freedom Sparks Imagination Many students are working on projects in the science department this year. There was a wide variety of experiments conducted throughout the year. Three students made a survey of the Del Valle Reservoir. Others worked on comparative anatomy and optical experiments. Many of these people take the regular science courses with their independent study as a supplement. The Math Learning Center provides the opportunity for moving at your own rate in that department. In its second year, independent study has proven to be one of the most popular and effective educational programs offered at Livermore High School. lt is hoped that there will be independent study in more fields.
