Filling a vital role here at Livermore High School is a teacher known to all of us. We are all aware of his invaluable contributions to our school life. Born in San Antonio, Texas, Coach Lee Williford moved here with his familyfrom Dunsmuir nine years ago to teach and coach at Livermore High. Since then, through his perseverence and dedica- tion, he has become one of our best-liked teachers. In addition to his outstanding abilities as a math teacher, he is, in our opinion, one of the best basketball coaches in the area. Coach Williford has led our basketball teams to victory for nine years, five of those years we won the District Champion- ship, and this year we played in the Tournament of Champions. J Q N To you, Mr. Willifor , as a teacher, a coach, and a man, we ti dicate this yearbook. Nl Z' F V , ' 'NV' - J 'L 1WlxfnfiVf'fL M' f it Q ff fxt, ' A I' X s-, i AA Qi. rj CJ, if N r A lliflgf. That is all well and good. Too little is being said about the role of modern education in Q, - the development of moral and ethical values. This I 11 - could become a national calamity, because the world is looking to us for democratic leadership. Nl! fr , r Our schools must play a major role in the develop- ment of that leadership. One ofthe most essential characteristics for demo- cratic leadership is honesty. It is the basic moral virtue. It is, also, the best asset for success that any boy or girl can have. MW! Ralph T. It is later found that the greatest problem is the continuation of efficient and productive student government. There is one singular key to an efficient associa- tion. This is the mutual cooperation between the administra- tion and the student body. Only the gradual development of sound student body agencies and policies can a nearly independent self-governing body be at- tained. But for such a situation to be instigated there needs to be the continued strong support from the student body majority. As student body president 1960-1961, I would like to thank the student body for their assurance and support through the entire year. With lollipops in our mouths and bows in our hair we began the long trails of our high school career. A little later that fall we presented our first class dance, The Freshman Return. We all remember clipping the lawn around the Senior Bench with scissors, and wondered whether we would ever see the day when we could step on it without having to polish or sand the bench. Well, that day finally came. In fact, it crept upon us so quickly that many of us still cannot believe that we have graduated In our Freshman year we elected our first class officers Ronnie Mueller, Presidentg Robin McCormick, Vice Presidentg Carolyn Clark, Secretary-Treasurer, Si Gimbel, Boys' Representative, Sandy Chrisman, Girls Representative. In our Sophomore year we put on our first really big dance, the Sophomore Hop. The class chose for its theme, Silver Bells, since the dance was presented at Christmas time. Class officers for our Sophomore year were Si Gimbel, President, Dennis Strieff, Vice President, Karen Shewchuck, Secretary, Ginny Mul- queeney, Treasurerg Maryanne Reginato, Girls' Rep- resentativeg and Ron Mueller, Boys' Representative. That year Karen Shewchuck, Robin McCormick, and Jan Peters served our school as the first Junior Varsity Cheerleaders. Our Junior year was an exciting one for all of us. Our class was privileged to send our schools' first foreign exchange student, Rosalie Baca, to Belgium for the summer. Jan Peters and Denny Strieff were selected from the Junior class to be our representatives at Girls' State and Boys' State. Our Junior Prom was one of the biggest events of that year. The theme for the prom was Midnight Mist. Jean Kliss and Ronnie Mueller were elected class king and queen. Everyone thought the prom was a big success, and it wasg we made 24 cents on the delightful affair. Our class also has the unofficial distinction of being the class to fit the most people in a telephone booth. We were an up-and -com ing class: no one could deny that. We, also, among all the others, had another distinction that yearg all the pom -pon girls were from the class of '61, ours, of course. Class officers for our Junior year were Bill Clark, Presi- dentg Mike Benedict, Vice President: Ginny Mul- queeney, Secretaryg Denny Strieff, Boys' Representa- tive, Jan Peters, Girls' Representativeg Heather Ro- wen, Treasurerg George Ising and Jackie Cerruti, Program Chairman. As Seniors, we all enjoyed the many long-awaited privileges. We now were the supreme rules of the Senior Bench and Lawn, we had our Senior Ditch Day, our graduation, and our graduation party, our Senior Ball, and all the other wished -for Senior Privileges. I Remember Mama, the senior play, presented No- vember 18 and 19 was sold out both nights. It was the first senior play in the history of Livermore High that made a clear profit. Varsity Cheerleaders were all from our class again. Sandy McGregor, Sharon Savage, Carol Hachmann, and Bobbi Gaar did a wonderful job of cheering our teams on to victory. They, in fact, did so well at the football games that our school won the league champ- ionship for the second year in a row. Our class officers for our Senior year were Bill Rund- strom, Presidentg Ronnie Mueller, Vice President, Jean Kliss, Secretary, Ron Weimer, Boys' Representativeg Sharon Savage, Girls' Representative. Thinking back upon it all, we see that each year had its own share of fun, hard times, and sorrow. It is hard to say which year was the best, because each year had a different meaning for each person. After 12 years of carefully guided education, it now becomes our turn to walk out and meet the world. Many of us are going on to schools of higher education to further our judg- ment and knowledge. We are just beginning a search that will last for the entirety of our lives. Others of us are going out in the work-a -day world to work our way to fame and fortune. If we can just remember a few of the basic truths that we have learned in Livermore High, we will be well on the road to success. ROBERT AARON Bob , Transfer San Luis Obispo 3. Q has been residing with the family of Deci and Jamie Deck 5,51 IJ? -V A this year, while attending Livermore High School. Cockie comes to us from the Netherlands. She resides with her parents and two younger sisters in The Hauge, the capi- tol of South Holland. Here at school Cockie is active in G.A.A., C.S.F., and A.F.S. She was chosen Senior Girls' Representative in G.A.A., and is Assistant Editor of the school annual. Cock- ie's favorite subjects this year are History and Spanish. She intends to major in languages when she returns to the Netherlands. Cockie had a lot to say about our American boys. The first thing she said was, They are so very different from the Dutch boys--not only in looks, but in actions and attitudes. As she started saying this, her face began turning a faint shade of red, and before she was finished her blush had turned to a vivid shade of redish -purple. One might say that her unique blush is one of Cockie's most distinguishing charac- teristics. Asked if she ever gets homesick for her family and home- land, Cookie replied, Oh, no, I have such a wonderful time here and so much to keep me busy that I never have time to be homesick. It didn't take too long for Cockie to become accustomed to our American foods. She says she even prefers our food to her hown. Many of us remember the time Cockie had her first pizza, a dish she had never tasted before. Now she eats right along with the rest of us. We all had a wonderful and interesting time with Cockie this year. The girls will remember trying to explain the difference between a peach and a nectarine. You should have seen the time we had trying to tell her what fuzzy meant. She has been the source of much enjoyment to all COCKIE Van Den BERGH of us--and has brought us many experiences that we will never forget. We will all miss Cockie when she returns to Holland this summer. Her friendly warmth and interest have made her such a familiar part of the campus that something will be missing without her. We are sure that Cockie will long be remembered in the hearts of all the students of Livermore I-ligh School. Good -Bye, Cockie, it has been a wonderful experience knowing you. Best of Luck in all you do. 70 .uw 4 'N-A , , Fl A s ll K Y , Z 1 ix, t ll ' , Lil' :gk ,gl 1, Swv Casey at the Bat Sexy Seniors! ! The Girls' Athletic Association welcomes all girls enrolled in Physical Education classes to join them in fun and sports. During the year we participate in a variety of recreational activities. In the fall volleyball is the game--high- lighted by the classic of the senior girls versus the faculty. A swimming clinic was added this fall for those interested in synchronized swimming. In the winter cageball and basketball are the sports. In March comes fun at our G.A.A. dance--it's perfectly acceptable and encouraged for a girl to ask a boy! Our climax comes in the Spring when we present the acquacade. This is a three-month project which takes the participation of every member to be successful. It is hard work, loads of fun, and very rewarding. The finale this year was something new--an awards tea and initiation of new officersg alumni and parents were encouraged to attend. In addition to local fun and sports, we also attend many sports and playdays to meet the girls of G.A.A. in other towns. We are very fortunate, indeed, to have Miss Wilson, Miss I-Iurner, and Miss Nelson working right along with us to make our year in G.A.A. successful. SPORTS QUEEN WRITE-UP This year Livermore High School tried something new: instead of having a Homecoming Queen we decided to have a queen who would reign over all the sports--a Sports Queen. The Queen and her two attendants reigned over the John Swett basketball game on January 20. 1961. Six finalists were chosen from the Senior Class to run for Queen. They were Susan Borch, Dianne Pouliot, Karen Shewchuck, Mary Mueller, Jackie Cerruti, and Annette Weidman. When the stu- dent body went to the poles they elected Karen Shewchuck as their Queen, and Jackie Cerruti and Sue Borch as her attendants. All of the girls looked very lovely the night of the big event. The girls were escorted by Si Gimbel, Lonny Podgorney, and Mike Benedict. ,ev-sm.. l 1 an r K 'l ,QI ' 4 3 if . ,G gg .A l A I X.. l 1, if Queen Connie Brenton and King Bruce Henry take a ride in the royal sleigh. The dreamy decorations blended in very appropriately with the theme. The Junior Class nominated Deci Deck and Daryl Schofield, Connie Brenton and Bruce Henry, and Linda Ferrario and George Howard to run for king and queen. The people attending the dance were given aballot, and voted for whom they would like to see become king and queen. Connie Brenton and Bruce Henry proved to be their choice. The king and queen were crowned by last year's king and queen, Ron Mueller and Jean Kliss. Everyone had a wonderful time at the prom and enjoyed many Christmas Dreams, we're sure! As our first game opened the boys ran over the San Ramon wolves with a tremendous score of 39-13. The winning of this game meant the continuance of 10 consecutive winning games. The cowboys came right back the following week to meet Tracy. The tense feeling in the air during the game proved to be false when the team defeated Tracy by a score of 49-13. For the next game, we traveled over to Antioch. This hard, sell-fought game brought us our 12th straight victory. The score was a close 13-6. The heartbreaker for Livermore came on October 7. Pacifica then broke the winning streak of the Cowboys with another close score--18-14. But this loss didn't affect the Cowboys, they just practiced and practiced, and then ran right through the Albany line to win our first league game. The scoreboard sung the beautiful tune of Cowboys 38, Albany '7. Coaches Don Couch and Paul Reginato felt we were then ready to meet our big rivals, Amador High of Pleasanton. This was an exciting gameg the cowboys came up with their second league victory. Pleasanton played a hard game but it seemed the Dons just didn't have what it took to beat the cowboys. The score was 39-13. The next game over at Liberty wasn't as easy a game as everyone thought it would be. Liberty fought hard, but like Amador, just couldn't make the few extra touchdowns they needed. The score--19-6. The night of the last league game was the big triumph for the cowboys as they wiped our John Swett 41-12. The Livermore High School Cowboys had once again taken the EBD-DVAL Championship! At our last game with Moutain View the Cowboys wrapped up the season with a 38-14 win. Not only did Livermore come through with one honor, but three more besides. First of all, six members of the Cowboy team made the All-League team. They were Si Gimbel, Denny Strieff, John Hughes, Dan Spruiell, Paul Phillips, and Chuck Neil. Second, Denny Strieff was voted, along with four other members of teams in the bay area, to the Football Hall of Fame. Third, the hard working Si Gimbel was voted to play on the North-South Shrine Game to be held in July at the Los Angeles Colosseum. This has truly been a remarkable year for the ever-popular Livermore Cowboy team. VARSITY BASKETBALL This year's Varsity Basketball team is one of the best teams we have had in a long time, says Varsity Basketball Coach, Lee Williford. We, also, feel that this has been a very successful year for our basketball team. Our team this year was composed of many excellent players, because of this fact we are unable to single out any particular player or players as being our team stars. Plenty of practice and much effort put forth by all the players on the team were among the top secrets of our Champs. To top off a wonderful season, our boys won the League Championship once again. But this time they did not stop here! The biggest thrill of this season was the winning of the Diablo Valley Athletic League--East Bay Division Championship which led to the defeat of Pittsburg, the Contra Costa Division champion, and gave us the wonderful experience of playing in the Tournament of Champions. Our first game in the Tournament was lost to McClymonds, who had won the Tournament for three straight years, and who went on to win the Tournament this year. For awhile, we thought that we might beat McClymonds, but the game was lost in the last five minutes of the game. If we had played them later in the Tournament we might have won. The second game was with Redwood, and we won this one with a score of 42-38. The third game was a play-off in the consola- tion finals with Richmond. Before they came to the Tournament, Richmond had won 24 games and lost none. This team was rated ffl in Northern California. Here we probably played the best game of the season. Erwin Mueller scored 26 of our 57 points in that game, and ended up as the leading scorer in the entire Tournament. I-Ie was also picked to be on the All-Toumament team. The winning of the consolation brought about a good finish for a team whose outstanding quality was their unselfishness in team play. This team has gone farther than any previous team from Livermore High School. The school will always remember the boys who represented Livermore High so well: Jerry Smith, Erwin Mueller, Terry Dailey, Pete Zodtner, and Denny Strieff. When asked about the team, Coach Williford said, It was an extreme pleasure for me to coach a group of boys with such a good attitude and desire to win. 114 as 3 QQ! Coach Crew VARSITY BASEBALL The 1961 baseball season was just underway when the El Vaquero went to press, so it is hard for us to say just how the season progressed. George Howard, Terry Dailey, and Mark Worth will be doing the pitching chores, while Ted Goad is behind the plate. Terry Dailey and Rich Mans field handle the duties on first base, Bill Dawson and David Salisbury on second base, Dan Spruiell and Ron Weimer on third base, and Ray Arm- strong and Don Romine as shortstop. John Needham, Craig Mueller, and Ron Mueller should take care of the spaces in the outfield. There are rumors that the team may have a chance at the championship. To this date they have won 3 out of 4 practice games, and are constantly improving. . It is hoped that they will hold the spirit they have at present throughout the entire season and come up with the championship for Livermore. First string men are Bob Rundstrom, handling the pitchingg Jim Henderson, Jim Clark, and Bob Taylor, performing the duties of 1B, 2B, and 3B, respectively. David Grubbs is behind the plate, while Kieth Erickson, Neil Haera, and Tony Mejia cover the spaces in outfield. The team is expected to win its share of games this year. They have a lot of spirit and plenty of talent. If the team keeps doing as it has been so far, we should have a team of which to be proud at the end of the season. -tg v il' u.-.4 A A, T T 15fe lfiv, faef fs: Y fb N B .ff 4 ft si. B TEAM SWIMMING B SWIMMING Coach Fracisco tells us that this is undoubtedly one of the very best B swimming teams we have ever had at Livermore High. Don and Ron Knott, swimming freestyleg Tim Weaver, swimming backstrokeg Bill Gruhlke, swimming butterflyg and Phil Smith, swimming breaststroke all set several records. These boys will make a strong future varsity team, and will undoubtedly he among the winners of the EBCA L. Tom Holms, Bud Davis, Ray Mclntosh, and Bruce Sojka also brought honor! as well si' Li sis V ua ' .f s M is as extra support needed by the team. With all this fine material there is no doubt that this year 's B team will win their league. All of the fine points possessed by this team add up to indicate that Livermore will most likely continue to dominate swimming in the EBCAL in the years to come. VARSITY SWIMMING This year we again have one of the finest teams in the history of Livermore High, says Coach Pat Fracisco. We should again be able to take the ch ampionship. Undoubtedly some of the boys will go to the North Coast. George Ising, this year 's team captain, is one of the best distance swimmers on the team, and has been beaten by very few other men. With Lonny Podgorney and Larry Morris as our top divers, Jim Carlson and Pete Szekely in the backstroke, John Becker, Mike Segundo, Larry Morris, Pete Szekely, and Steve Harrison in the freestyle, Gary Wentworth and Dick Gaskill in the breastroke, the team should make a real show this year. Pete Szekely, 50 meter and 100 meter freestroke, set several school records already this year. George Ising has also done the same. All of the boys on the team contributed much to its success. Plenty of hard practice, lots of hard work, and a fine effort put forth by every member of the team brought many honors upon our swimming team. iw 3 wi 53 Ak mm T.. ' '2 xg 1 ww V , asf? ' Livermore High School's 1961 track team has indicated so far by their first two i, meets, that they have a team to watch. To this date Livermore won against a I 4,y.,,-yt if strong John Swett team 61 1X2 to 51 1!2, and defeated San Ramon 70 to 43. Coaches McCormick and Goldsmith have over 100 candidates out for track, but they feel that there are still quite a few boys who have a lot of talent who 1 haven 't even tried out for the team. Some of the varsity boys have indicated they will be hard to beat. They are Pete Malinari, Paul Kliss, Don Reed, Ray Armstrong, Phil Johnson, Sam Thompson, Terry Anderson, Pat Roberts, Darryl Schofield, Paul Phillips, Si Gimbel, Randall Coagh McCormick Ellison, Jerry Ingledue, Bruce Henry, and Dave Schmedding. All of these boys, along with the rest of the track team, should put forth an effort that will bring them a great many victories. X , I M -..vi . A ,,,.- . ' ,.,j,gm' . Their snappy cheers and the enthusiasm they displayed did a great deal to encourage the teams and fans. Under the leadership of peppy Sandy McGregor the cheerleaders led the crowds in many new yells and routines. Making posters, beatum cards, and banners took up a lot of their time, but intensely ral- lied the school spirit. The girls have had a wonderful season: they cheered the football and basketball teams on to their league championships, and climaxed their efforts by inspired cheerleading at the Tournament of Champions. The J.V. Cheerlead- ers, under the leader- ship of Simone Pier- son, put forth great effort in leading the LV. and B teams on to victory. 1' . Through these pages, we have tried to capture the spirit and ingenuity of the student body as contributing to and reflected in a considerable scholastic achievement. As you turn the leaves, you visit once again the familiar scenes about the campus, and see the friendly faces which, with you, joined in support of your alma mater. The whole year seems to pass before you at a glance as you attend once more the dances, assemblies, meetings and sports events. The 1961 EL VAQUERO pays tribute to the senior class which has led the school through a year of firsts. The cover, a colorful duplication of the beautiful graduation announcement chosen by the class of '61, is the first introduction to the book of memories reviewing the outstanding events. Eleven years ago, the class of 1950 used a colored picture on the title page but this year, we have utilized a very beautiful color picture for both insheets to bring color and life to the book. Winning the EBD League Championship was not enough for our Varsity Basketball team. They were 'Tmade of sterner stuff and strove on to capture the consolation crown at the Tournament of Champions, representing Livermore, in their return after ten years. The DAR award given annually to an outstanding senior girl was presented to Rosalie Baca who has done a fine job in school leadership and, who represented LIVERMORE JOINT UNION HlGH SCHOOL as summer exchange student to Belgium. Not stopping at this, Rosalie pressed on toward her goal and became the first girl from our school to win the state award. Replacing the traditional Homecoming, the Pom -Pon girls helped to stage the first Sports Qieen game at which a queen and two attendants were elected and presented during half time. They reigned at the victory dance at the Forresters Hall that night. Other new developments during the school year have been a new, all girl chorus, a promising wrestling team, and the honor of Dennie Strieff being elected to the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame. Si Gim- ble was the first player selected from our school to play in the North-South Shrine Game in Los Angeles. We would like to express our thanks and appreciation to our advisors, Mr. Cooper, Mr. Dust, Mr. Saunders and Mrs. Rundstrom for their time, effort, and concern in helping us to produce this annual. This is a growing, active, exuberant school with endless possibilities in scholastic and athletic achievement, and we, the staff, are proud to present to you this lasting record of the years' events, the 1961 EL VAQUERO. ...M manual an x' 4-rv fx 2 'Q '?1 ', 1g 43 v-nl Y , ax 1 Q: u 7 fm. if fn. iff,-, 1 aww WW, .
