Since Robert Livermore first settled in 1839 on the Las Positas Land Grant, the city's population has grown steadily until it now exceeds 13,000. Liver- more's expansion in area has also increased sharply in recent years with new housing developments spreading the town in all directions. During the colorful, luxurious days of the Spanish Dons, Livermore's settlement became a flourishing cattle rancho, famous for its generous hospitality. By 1848 there existed only three families in the valley, then the Gold Rush brought an influx of people who, attracted to the beneficial climate, re- mained here permanently. These early immigrants established hotels, general stores, shops, saloons, and restaurants, in 1876 Livermore was incorporated as part of Murray Township. Farming has progressed from the original cattle and grain raising to the production of a variety of ir- rigated crops, including such specialties as roses, grapes, and assorted vegetables. Founded in the late 1800's, three major vineyards produce world- famous wines. The turn of the century brought the first successful industries to Livermore, including Coast Manu- facturing and Supply Company, Kaiser Gravel Plant, and many others. These have increased in size and number through the years. 2 I In addition, Livermore's healthful climate has en- couraged the establishment of two institutions for the cure of tuberculosis. One of the West's foremost mental hospitals is also located here. For forty years Livermore's World's Fastest Rodeo has annually drawn spectators from all over the United States. The first school was initiated here in 1866 with thirteen pupilsg today the combined enrollment ex- ceeds 3,000. Livermore High is rapidly expanding to adjust to the needs of a growing community, with three new buildings constructed this year, Extensive research in nuclear physics by Sandia Cor- poration, General Electric, and the University of California Radiation Laboratory has contributed notably to the growth of Livermore Valley. Prom- inent scientists and numerous other employees, aided by fabulous new equipment, labor here in atomic research to provide for a richer and more secure tomorrow. The Livermore Valley may well indeed boast a colorful past, yet it promises an even brighter future. Today, it is the prosperous center of scientific research, culture, and a variety of in- dustries --wineries, agriculture, gravel mining--as well as construction to accomodate the continuous increase in population. It is to the unending prog- ress and development of this area that the 1958 EL VAQUERO is dedicated. 3 dministration LEFT to RIGHT: C. Graham Nissen, Chester H. Nelson, Raymond Gurney, Elwyn J. As a one -man athletic department, you directed football, basketball, baseball, and track, and taught boys' physical education and mathematics. As the school grew, your duties multiplied until 1952 when you were selected as vice principal. Your leadership has been sparked by a keen sense of humor and characterized by excellent sportsmanship. Thank you for all the fine things that you have done for us. Good luck but not good -bye to an excellent teacher and a fine friend 56 IHHHUFHCTUHIHG s ,71 .X iii .'.,l'..-A I I X X yf x , P q ,w!. ' They won two of the most important games by upsetting Liberty 14 - 13 and beating Amador 13 - 6. Their 13 - 13 tie with San Ramon also pleased Livemaore fans. The fighting spirit of the team was exemplified by the fact that many of the games were not decided until the final minutes of play. 1 Livermore had seven of its players named to the EBD-DVAL Z All-League squad. Frank Sposeto, who played well throughout il Leroy Irwin- the year, earned first string position at guard. He also won Frank Sposetto, :I both the Eagles' and the Foresters' awards for being our most ' valuable player. Paul Martinez, Gilbert Rocha, and Joe Captain Spruiell were .elected to the third stringwhile Dan Hansen, Most Valuable Player Herold Sinclair and Sonny Mayer qualified for honorable mention. Graduation will deplete our first string ranks. Frank Sposeto, Paul Martinez, Gilbert Rocha, Joe Spruiell, Sonny Mayer, Pat O'Shea, LeRoy Irwin, Chuck Romero, Jim Stocks, George Greeno, Charles Foscalina, Chris Frank and John Dougherty are senior players whose positions will have to be filled next year. These boys may not have been champions in a won or lost sense, but they were I without peer when it came to continuous, clean, hard play - every team they faced knew they had been in a battle. 5 Livermore High watches their passing with regret, for their actions will be hard to emulate. 5 i 58 ' J J. THIRD ROW: Cliff Patrick, Coach Bill Wolcott, Bill Palmer, Jim Majka, Tim Ford, Jim Armstrong, Keith Johnson, Dallas Smith, Stanley Roudebush, Duane Rooney, David Dutro, Ted Davis, Wally Walker. Junior Varsity 5' Football By Clifford Patrick Livermore's Junior Varsity, coached by Bill Wolcott, not only won the league championship of their division but they also completed the most successful football season in the history of the school. Unbeaten and untied, they permitted their opposition a season's total of only 18 points while accrueing a decisive 153. Our best offense was shown at Liberty when our boys scored 21 points in the first quarter. Defensively we were at our stoutest against Alhambra holding them to microscopic yardage. But the final game of the year with San Ramon for the championship topped all for thrills. After trailing 6 - 0 till the final two minutes of play, the young Cowboys scored on a Jim Armstrong pass up the middle to Larry Strieff. Then Tim Ford, capable quarterback, ran across the extra point to give us a 7 - 6 lead. Although San Ramon filled the air with footballs in the closing seconds, they could not penetrate our defense. Standout in a group of exceptionally fine players was Ron Mueller. Ron, a back, could run, kick, pass, and tackle with amazing facility. Larry Strieff with 66 points was our most dangerous attack, and Keith Johnson, deadly tackler and excellent pass receiver, proved a veritable Stonewall on defense. Coach Wolcott believes that excellent attendance at the practice sessions, unselfish group play, a fiercely blocking line, plus an intense desire to win were the key factors for our teams success. He anticipates that many of his present stars will perform equally as well when they graduate to varsity ranks next year. 59 , l -as-gn ,w Rs' Y Qr3nrf'?k .
