Foremost among the nations of the world stands the United States. ln Northern New England, occupying a small section of West- ern Maine. Livermore Falls is located. A very typical enterprising American commun- ity, its resources have been highly developed by an energetic citizenry. Realizing that the youth of our land constituted our eountryls greatest asset. the earliest local settlers planned, through education. to bring into action the highest abilities of man, the men- tal and intellectual. In preparation for a greater America, they acted. So we, today. meet at L.F.H.S.. enrolled as students and as junior citizens. We take pride in our school. our community, our state and our nation. GRIFFIN, principal at L.F.H.S. for nineteen years, superintendent of Union l3O for seven years, resigned last -lune due to ill health. Perhaps a Livermore Falls Trust Company column written in The Advertiser best expressed the feeling of townspeople, f'From comment along the street, it is evident that many other towns- people are thinking of that retired Superin- tendent whose eflqective administration is best shown in the remarkable record made by graduates of our local schools in institu- tions of higher learning. Yet the man along the street is thinking of that Superintendent in much more personal termsg thinking of his quiet wisdom and kindly humor, thinking of his uncomplaining courage when illness made the going tough, thinking most of all of his constant, unselfish concern for the welfare of othersf' SUPT. CLYDE L. MANN is a former editor of the Livermore Falls Advertiser, a grad- uate of L.F.H.S., Class of 1920, and a grad- uate of Colby College. He has had teaching experience in the schools of Florida and Maine coming here from Dixlield where 'he had served as principal. He was a member of the Maine Principals, Association, and former member of the Educational Policies committee of that organization. Mr. Mann was principal at for five years. He introduced the Washington Trip for seniors and the Student Council as new school ac- tivities. MR. DANIEL ALVINO, who served as principal at L.F.H.S, from September '53 until February 354, is also a graduate of l,.F.H.S., Class of '27. He is a graduate of Fordham University and came to L.F.H.S. after teaching in high schools in Maine, Ver- mont and Massachusetts. Mr. Alvino re- signed to accept a position as principal at liiddeliord High School. liefore leaving for his new post lVIr. Alvino was given a party and gift by his ofhce girls and Kaydettes LH group he organized at L.F.H.S.bg a gift was also presented by the faculty at a 'lcollee partyw on his last day at school. MR. ALTON BLACK, a graduate of llart- mouth College, was selected to replace Mr. Alvino. For ten years he had 'been principal at Vest Paris High School. YYhile there he organized a County Public Speaking League for small schools and was especially active in the public speaking and dramatic lields. Mr. Black also organized at his school such recreational groups as a rifle club, cross- country team, badminton team, ping-pong and boxing. At Principal Black teaches Public Speaking and Problems of Democracy, is Supervisor of School Activi- ties, Student Council Adviser, Senior Class Washington Trip Adviser and Guidance Di- rector. First, stopping in New York, the group made a tour of the N.B.C. studios and the observation roof of the R.C.A. building. Next morning, leav- ing for Washington, D. C., they followed a crowded itinerary: Mount Vernon, Washington Monument, Lincoln and JefTerson Memorials, the F.B.I., Bureau of Printing and Engraving Buildings, as well as the Capitol, Senate Office Building, Congressional Library, Supreme Court Building, and the Lincoln Museum fthe famed Ford Theaterl. It holds its meetings every Friday during the year at which time all methods of raising funds and the use of club earnings are discussed and decided upon. Each year at Christmas time the members ol' the club donate food. clothing, and toys to a needy family. Boxes are packed with these gifts and sent to the family. Among its activities the club sells soda. candy, eoflqee, and hot dogs to the public at football games from a refreshment booth which was built for the club on school grounds. The club also sells candy during the noon recess and its funds are used toward the purchase of new equipment. Through the elllorts of the club the Com- mercial Department has been made one of the most modern in the state. The desks in the typing room are adjustable to each stu- dent,s height, while all chairs - the new posture type - are adjustable. All new equipment has been purchased by the school department with the Hnancial as- sistance of the club: a new Gestetner Dup- licating Klachine. a mimeoscope. an electric Blarchant Calculator, a new record player to be used to help students increase their dic- tation speed, and new fluorescent lighting' for the typing and bookkeeping rooms. Wilfred Laverdiere at bat. jnacg muiuag 1953 Under the coaching of Mr. Puiia, the squad learned positions, form, and how to run. Every afternoon practice began at 3:15. Starting from the gym the boys ran cross- country, a distance of about one and a half miles. On return from cross-country wind- sprints were in order as well as the 50-yard and 100-yard dashes. 'l'o keep in training the group ran around the field from four to eight times dailyg in a few weeks the squad was in fairly good con- dition. On May 15, 1953, the team took part in a triangular track meet at W'ilton. competing against Mexico and Wilton. The entire team participated in the runs, and acquired some helpful experience. Andy Barclay took the shot-put, throwing the shot 37 feet, Really a very fine sport, track should become more popular here in Livermore Falls High School because it develops stam- ina and a determined spirit. Laverdiere was the heavy sticker for the Andies with a home run and a single in three trips to the plate. 'l'he Andies were edged out, 3 to 2, by Wil- ton in what was a pitchers' duel all the way. 'l'he Andies blasted two Farmington pitchers lor I5 runs and easily trimmed the Grey- hounds, 15 to 7. Wlalton pitched his second victory of the SCHSOH. In the second game with Jay, thc Tigers blasted away at the Andies' pitchers for 9 runs, ending on top, 9 to 2. Oakes starred for -lay, Although the Andies led all the way until the seventh, Farmington came up with 5 big runs to heat the Green and lN'hite, 7 to fl. lYilton blasted out 4 runs in the lirst inning. going on to win 4 to ll. Bucky Buchanan pitched a perfect game, allowing no runs, no hits, no walks: no errors were committed be- hind him. He retired 21 men in order in the seven inning game. The Andies traveled to Leavitt, hut lost a close 'fl' to 3 game. Leavitt scored the win- ning run in the ninth inning. llean did well on the mound for the Andies. In the opening game of the State Principals' Association 'l'ournament the Andies were humped olli by Bridgton, I8 to -lf. Norman Nemi hit a home run for the Andies, but in a losing cause. As an opener, 'Lisbon High School came to Livermore Falls, The score was a deadlock 0-0. In the Wilton game the Andies met the Eagles at Colby Field. For two periods L.F. held the Wiilton chargers. Of the final score, 34-7, Wilton ehalked up 19 points in the third. Livermore Falls travelled next to Kents Hill for their best game of the season. The boys played a wonderful second hall' while hold- ing' Kents Hill to one first down. Farmington was the scene of another helt- ing for the Andies. Although we scored Iirst and led 7-O for a few minutes, it was hard to hold the speedy, shilty Greyhound backs. The score, 34-7. The Mrtxico HPintoes', invaded Andies' terri- tory with their troops at full strength. Little Joe Blanchard led the Pintoes to an un- disputed Vietory over the Andies. The Armistice Day 1953 game provided a dismal ending for the season. Trailing 13-O at the half, the Andies were outclassed. .lay intercepted two passes which provided l-It points in a matter of minutes. QA' Z?mAefLafZ 1953-4 Early in the season the hilltop girls donned their pale green gym suits and white sneak- crs to report to Coach Wagner for basketball practice. The clang of locker doors and the rush of feet on the gym floor was a welcome sound to many who liked fast scrimmage and frequent play. The Hrst practice sessions consisted mainly of calisthenics to get the girls in conditionf' Intramural competition was emphasized this year as the squad divided up into three teams. Each team had a captain and chose such titles as Beau1ieu's Bombshells, Har- low's Hotshots, and Brown's Spitballs. These intramural groups competed for honors. The Bornbshells racked up the points to take the Hotshots and 'Spitballs by storm. The teams serimmaged daily and a chart was kept of the schedules, scoring, and win- ners. Aside from intramural activities, the Andi- ettes played their regular seasonal games with other schools. The Ustarting lineup was composed of Lorine Beaulieu Q'Captainj, Diane Harlow, Anne Brown, Frances Darey, Marilyn Demont and Dianne Hamilton. Many of the subs including Ellen Cummings, Frances Kowalzyk, Marie Black, Jackie Tes- sier, and Sally Anderson saw plenty of action on the floor and around the hoop. However, at the Hrst showing, a Nliound Robinn pre-season meeting with Jay, Farm- ington and Wilton, the Andies took next-to- top honors. The Green and VVhite edgers kicked up their heels in the first game of the season, they romped past a Leavitt In- stitute quintet by a wide margin. The next two games went into the red col- umn .lay squeezed out a three-point Win, and an experienced and tall South Paris club downed the boys. Sparks flew as Coach Puiia whipped the home team into shape to thrash Winthrop and Leavitt in successive games on the home court. The Andies came from behind in the first half to glide past the Lisbon Falls courtmen. A small crowd saw the Green and Wlhite slowly creep past Boothbay Harbor and hold a considerable lead to the Hnal buzzer. An-- other game with Jay was a repetition of the first, with the Tigers teetering on top. Farm- ington went down under the Hne shooting of the Andies in a home game. Wlilton Acad- emy Eagles managed to fight oil a third quarter L.F. rally to roll over the Green and White. The next two contests were upsets on a di- vided basis, as Wlinthrop squeaked by tht Andies with a one-point lead and the home team jumped a strong Mexic'o quintet, due to the fine shooting ol' Harry Maxwctll and his teammates. Lisbon fell behind, beginning with the opening whistle. L.F. eagers had no trouble here. With Larry Bryant and Harry Nlaxwell missing because of sickness, the Andies held a strong Gould Academy club to a tie until the hnal quarter, when the handi- capped Green and Wlhite lost the race. On opening night of the Regional Tourna- ment the locals managed to stay out in front ol' Farmington until the final minutes of the last quarter when the Greyhounds made a strong bid and went out ahead to stay. This upset ended the season for the Andies, When playing at their best, the Andies al- ways looked good, but many games found the L.F. cagers in a slump. Page One Hundred Two ann!
