The ehronicler might speak of the Anasagunticook rAndroscogginJ Indians, most powerful and warlike tribe of the Abnaki Indians whose headquarters were at Rocka- meca lCanton7. a few miles up river: might tell fascinating legends of the aborigines who, for generations, roamed the entire length of the beautiful 210-mile Androscoggin Valley, devastating English coastal settlements as early as 1688 and making frequent forays inland against the hapless whites: the story teller might relate episodes con- cerning the Shuy Indians. or the lVIoose that Deacon Livermore shot at Moose Hill in 1787. Records point to the 130 families settled in the environs of our town in 1787: many of these menfolk had given important service in French and Indian Wlars. at the storming of Quebec. at Lexington and Bunker Hill. These great Ameri- can military traditions were carried on in later wars. for our townsmen bled at Gettysburg, at Chateau-Thierry, at Guadalcanal. and at the Bulge. An analyst of the modern scene would certainly speak of the industries of our town, how it is largely supported by the International Paper Company. whose local mill is the greatest producer of wall paper in the world: the Record Foundry, world famous for its precision manufacture of valves: the Burnham and Morrill Canning Company whose products sell in the great U. S. chain stores. and of large apple orchards and poultry farms in surrounding areas. Chiefly, however, our modern epic would deal with the human material in the town today. This is the way today's high school students. sometimes exuberant but always astute. describe their townspeople: I-Iere there is no racial discrimination, because everyone works with everyone else. Uusually in our town one has. as next door neighbors. people he has known all his life. and their troubles concern him. This I have seen with my own eyes - when the father of a family had broken his leg. neighbors would not only bring in the wood. and pile it neatly. but they would see that the family did not run out of wood. Having lived in two Maine cities I find Livermore Falls a wonderful place. The boys in this town are more serious and less destructive. Most parents try to give their children a good bringing up and manners are as good as can be expected from any child. 'Our town does not fear to face the futuref, Only a few people think back to the days gone by, and wish those times were here again. Some followers do not do much to help the leaders make our town a better place. but our chosen leaders accept responsibility and when they do not forget their duties. they become leaders not in mann' only. Our town has a balanced budget. a good public library: it is increasingly health- conscious: it has a childrenls clinic: Blood Mobile and health drive quotas are met. one lodge alone purchasing a hospital respirator after the '52 polio epidemic: it has quiet gardens which may be seen from the sleepy streets on a hot summerls day: it provides a school system with school buses. cafeteria. career study. school patrol and driver training course: it renders tribute to the liner things of live while fostering a strict, practical common sense: hardworking people progress in the cheerful compe- tition of our towng perhaps for a time back stairs gossip may seem to flourish like the bay tree, but it is soon countered by the indispensable fact lindersf' and healthful public discussion which bring about more ethical procedures. It can be seen that our young people are exposed to all kinds: to the good and the bad, to success and tragic weakness, all of which goes to prove that not all the lessons are in the school books. Cf course our school is a younger smaller part of our town. In such a community compounded of many diverse personalities the school children may be seen riding their bicycles. marching in scout parades. playing in the park. and enjoying to the full summer band concerts. liy their light hearted- ness we may know that they enjoy living in this typical American couununity. Our Town. Page lfom 'T lm-Mm. is 'KIM 1311.1- 22 Often . . . I would get to thinking about what a town Galesburg was. And I would ask: Was Galesburg any different from many other towns, some bigger and some smaller? Did I know America, the United States, because of what I knew about Galesburg? Come and show me another city with lifted head singing so proud to be alive and strong, Bragging and laughing that under his wrist is the pulse, and under his ribs the heart of the people. H. for nearly quarter of a century, died early in December, 1952. During a long period of physical suffering she left a splendid example of indomitable patience and high courage. Recognized in professional circles of the state and community, she set exacting standards of classroom work that commanded the respect of students and the grati- tude of many who learned later how much they owed to her thorough classroom training. Recognizing young students of high promise in her classes, she gave them practical, specific advice, as well as unflagging encouragement to continue their schooling. Her interest in the careers of her students continued far beyond high school. Especially outstanding for her extra curricular work as commencement and dramatic coach, Miss Maher spoke at her departmental meeting of the Maine Teachers' Association in 1950 on High School Commencement Ax a Senior Englisch Class Project, she contributed to The journal of Education an article on Dramatizit In The Small High School, and to the Mai1ze Teacher.s Digest another article on a creatively developed commencement project in her senior English classes. No. indeed. it is a Friday morning and the scene is Room ll? at Livermore Falls High Sehool. A weekly meeting ol' the Dramatic Cllub is being held. 'l'his morning the elub members are learning the fundamentals ol radio broadeasting: they are taking eues. speaking distinetly. and applying the various essential signals. ll' all goes well, this play will be tape reeorded. ln the elub this year several tape recordings ol' student play reading have been made, the record has then been played baek so that constructive criticism eould be given. Radio seripts have been used in the club which have proven so interesting that several members have expressed their intentions ol making a career of radio act- ing after graduation. Friday morning programs may include delightful readings, see- tions ol' famous plays. and operatic arias played on a reeord player purchased by the Dramatie Club several years ago. Before the Christmas holidays the llramatie Club Celebrated a meeting in Room IU whieh was decorated with mueh red. green and silver and a very gala Christmas tree. A tight pitchers, duel of eleven innings was lost by the locals when Tyler, the winning pitcher for Farmington, laid down a bunt to squeeze a man in from third. Bob Foster pitched a good game for the Andies, allowing only three hits. 'Bob Walton won his hrst game in the Sandy Andy League, setting back Wilton 4'-fl in ll innings. In the jay game which ran to ten innings, Couture was the winning pitcher. Ken Dube led the Andies with a homer and a double. ln the next game, for a second time, L. F. H. was defeated by Jay. Dubord was the winning pitcher for jay, giving up six hits, while 'Bob Foster, the loser, allowed four hits. Finally the Andies went on a hitting spree to defeat Farmington ll-3. 'Bob Walton pitched a fine game. Fred Franchetti was the big sticker for the Andies with a home run, a double, and two singles in Eve trips to the plate. In the hnal game the Andies really put on their hitting togs and walloped Kents Hill I4-4. Every Andy Cwith the exception of onej stacked up at least one hit. H. for the '52 season was a sad story, as the Andies lost 6 games and tied 2. The graduation of many reliable football players limited the return of experienced veterans. Of the thirty-four squad members who started the season only eight lettermen returnedg on the whole these were fellows whose only experience was as substitutes. They lacked the endurance required for 60-minute football. Coaches Toomey and Lazour had little opportunity to get acquainted with the squad in preseason practice. Mr. Lazour left us for the service in October, but we annexed a former college teammate of Coach Toomey's, Mr. Dominic Puiia. M1'. Puiia, like M1'. Toomey, had been a lineman at Colby College and both men had been captains of the '5Mules,l' Mr. Toomey in 1949 and Mr. Puiia in 1947. In the curtain-raiser the Andies lost to an almost equally unsteady Lisbon Falls eleven, 6 to fl. Andy Barclay was removed in the fourth quarter because of a shoulder injury. The Andies were more fortunate in their next combat, tying Kents Hill, 6-6. Again not much can be said about the game as Kents Hill had had about as much practice as the Andies. The Greyhounds from Farmington, led by ex-marine Bernie Davis, whitewashed the Andies, 21 to 0. The game was a fight, but fumbles on the Greyhound goal line gave our opponents the TDs that dropped the Andies. Mexico crushed the Andies, 47-l2. The team traveled to Rumford for a clash- by-nite with a highly favored Pinto team. Mexico, sparked by a small, speedy, and shility freshman, ran the Andies ragged. Sophomore Rickie Rhodenizer broke a leg and was out of action for the rest of the season. BOW' Bajfeffaff 1952-3 ln llecemher 552 the Andies opened their season with a fairly green,' lineup. Players who had seen some action last year were Bob Foster. john Wade and Paul llailey. Due to other activities in the gym Coach Puiia was able to get only about 1: week and a. half of practice before the first game. In the first contest of the season, a game with llay. the Andies found their mistakes and began working on them. At the final whistle the scorehoard showed the Tigers out in front. At the first home game with the South Paris Cardinals. the Andies showed improvement and battled the tall South Paris hoopsters well. hut the visitors remained il few steps ahead all the way to the final buzzer. When the L, F. H. S. Cagers traveled to Norway. they werenlt ahle to Control the boards since the Norway lineup averaged six feet. Despite Bob Foster's charging through their zone to net l-l points. the Rams romped ahead to a win. The waning morale of the Andies was fanned back to flame by a new team member. W'ilfred fFo-Foj Layerdiere. a transfer from .john Bapst High School liangor. Also Mr. Puiia's skillful coaching began to show results in the improvement of individual players. The win-starved Andies satisfied their hunger in the game with Lishon Falls. A yery high shooting percentage of fifty percent in the first half put the Andies way ahead for the rest of the game. In a hard-fought battle the I.. F. courtsters overwhelmed the alumni team, consisting of veterans of past varsity squads. During the final quarter the alumni made a frantic attempt to turn the tables but were unahle to stop the well-coached Andies from Hswisliingu points through the net. Another home game proved that the L, F. H. hoopsters were no longer a push-over. A heavily-favored Mexico quintet found it hard going against the revived Andies. although the Pintos squeaked hy with a 3-point margin.
