It means giving one an equal chance and a fair share. Education gives everyone an equal chance-the poor child, the Negro child, the child of the Mountains, , the child on the wrong side of the tracks, the one born to foreign parents. Democracy keeps our society 1 moving toward progress. It develops new frontiers of opportunity. It gives man the chance to improve his way of life, and the way 6f life of others. I Our country has a larger proportion of its young people in school to the age of eighteen than any other country in the world. This is due to public policy, both recent and of long standing. From the earliest days of the American colonies our founding fathers knew that public policy required that public schools be maintained. In 1635 the Latin School was established by a Boston town meeting. In 164-2 the General Court of Massachusetts passed a law requiring all parents and masters to teach their children and apprentices the uEnglish tongue and knowledge of the capital laws. A Franklin, Washington and Jefferson knew that a democracy demands an enlightened citizenry. It sponsors extra-curricular activities, safety training, cafeteria privileges. It cultivates the appreciations, It is vocation conscious. It fosters civic attitudes within the local and the world community. What kind of young people does an American high school produce? Let the pages of our 1952 year- book show one American high school with its young people. They are products of one community and its families, its teachers, its shops, its industries, its churches, its streets, its movies, and all its organizations. These are the boys and girls who, in years to come, will make our laws, run our homes, operate our fac- 1 'riff WNW' 4 ff'-vg1tfg i6'f', 1A ' ' gf Q Qt vc ff-gi Q 1 :swf f' way, pf' gif, sw irl' jffwz-f,g9.' rg 31 ,2 V, , F jmmfxa mg... di ff 1V-1 f .1 V1 '.,V f 2 ' ff kg ' 1 f Wag K fff 1,l'1f f,fgQ 'r115ff:7 V,f1V,llVV,VV1.yV .QC-Q Wfwlpf , . 5 , , ,Q V,,, V1 . How nice to have shed that stigma of extreme youth! At last we were actually Sophomores. The Sophomores have certainly added high jinksl' to the sometimes staid life at L. F. H. S. The class adds to group gaiety, to be sure. but if need should arise, it is just as ready as any to take on real resoonsibilities. Page Thirty-eight myoroue uman mfafiond Class rings are one of the biggest thrills of the Sophomorf- yeah Like every other class we have a social dance and must plan carefully the program of music' and the rm-frm-shments. Of its good work in both sports and subjects the elass may be proud. Many Sophomores have been listed for honors and have participated in the many clubs, plays and musiral activi- ties at L. F. H. S. S. early in September? Have you wondered about them? They were evidently wondering about them- selves, those incoming hordes of Frosh. Survivors of the initiation, they have become fulfledged sons and daughters of L. F. H. S. They have found school an inexhaustible source of satis- faction, making friends galore, joining all the activities and. incidentally, acquiring an educa- tion. Well represented in athletics and clubs are the Freshmen. Composed of energetic salesmen and saleswomen this class earned 3121.10 in the Crowell Publishing Company magazine campaign. The class felt it was good to stand on a strong financial pedestal. Wlhen income from the class social-dance is added. the class will be more than able to cope with its expenses while in high school, and have a reserve for the senior trip. Persistence. courage. initiative. cooperativeness. eheerfulness: these are but a few of the qualities needed during the four years' journey. WW- feel sure the class of '55 has them. Keith Anderson, le facteur, canit refrain from smiling at the clumsy antics of the retired merchant, Perrichon. The mous- tachio'd pere de famille, always fussed at a new experience such as the tour to Switzer- land, is just an easy mark to such an ex- perienced beggar as Majorin QLionel Dubej, who is already considering how to make a quick getaway, even before the adieus of train departure. Behind the ticket window, Robert Gagnon is amused by the outstretched hands, no less than by the handkerchief which, from time to time, mops Perrichon's perspiring brow. Henriette QRetha Turnerj and Mme. Perri- chon QMary Lou Dareyl, already footweary, complain about the discomforts of travel. THE ROMAN HOME Flowing Roman robes adorned the actresses in a Christmas dramatization of the Roman Saturnalia. Matrona QMarie Tardifj explains the symbolism of the annual festival to Creusa QDiane Harlowj. The clay doll was made by Robert Stevens. Billy Strout drew the atrium background for the play. Computation of gasoline eosts when travelling by ear is a lesson assignment, and the high cost of speedi' must be understood after the project is finished. By travelling at 54 rather than 65 mi. per hour one saves 38.30 of gasoline expense per lO00 miles. Advantages of travelling 'by plane or bus are also discussed in the project. Alice Libby. Wlith spirit and enthusiasm the band undertakes its practice sessions. These famous musicians, with all their blowing and tooting, are always on time for practice each Monday night. In their beautiful green and white uniforms, the band members represent the spirit of the school. Certainly the band provides them with many hours of enjoyment. A few band members play with the town band and so gain musical experience. Definitely they contribute to a community enterprise, so much enjoyed by all. Townspeople can truly see the band on parade, when it marches on Armistice and Memorial Days. The L. F. H. S. Band has, incidentally, received high ratings en the judges' scoresheets at the State Festival. The orchestra with its symphonies and preludes is an inspiration to either a student or a community audience. Every Monday morning the members of the orchestra meet for an hour of instruction and practice, so that a competent group of artists may perform at school func- tions. School Play, Visitors, Night, Spring Concert, Junior Night, Class Day, and Commence- ment present the orchestra at its best. Mr. Myers, L. F. H. Maestro, develops practice sessions of large and small groups to offer many opportunities to students. There is practice in rhythm, and sight reading. Sensi- tive and artistic interpretation is cultivated under his baton. The string quartet has played at many church and club festivities, and is popularly regarded as a highly trained group of stud- ent musicians. Page Sixty-four OrcAe5fra ,S?gml9A0nieA, ana! Through its sales activities the students have been able to add many improvements to the Commercial Department. In the Commercial Department is a Marchand Calculator. used in bookkeeping classes and purchased jointly by the School Department and the Club Cin re- cent yearsj. The Club has invested in Filing cabinets. and business reference books for the Commercial library. It has purchased records for shorthand dictation, which are used by stu- dents who wish to increase their rate of short- hand dictation. New steel chairs. adjustable typewriter desks, and an electric mimeograph and mimeoscope are also among the joint pur- A chases of recent years, the School Department furnishing half the funds. This year a new electric typewriter was purchased, and each student has become familiar with the use of this machine. Through the generous support of the superintendent and school committee these purchases have been made possible. This year the Club gave one hundred and lifty dol- lars toward purchase of the new intercommuni- cation system which connects shop. eym. and all classrooms with the Principal's oflice. 124' COMMERCIAL CLUB OFFICERS Seated. left to right.
