Hendrix. SKIPPERS MESSAGE f Since the theme of this Lions Pause is sailing ships, I wish to express thanks to those of the crew who made this school annual possible. It is a fine log of activities and will be long cherished. Another yearly cruise has come to a close. Much has happened during this time to make us thankful-the war is over-our auditorium and classrooms have been completed-and students have been more desirous of building a good high school record. The students have shown increased interest and ability in student government. Relations with other high schools have been both enioyable as well as beneficial. This includes, in addition to athletics, inter-school assembly programs, student leader conferences and visits. As your Skipper, I extend best wishes to the graduates who are about to embark on that bigger cruise for which the high school voyage is but a preparation. The sailing ahead may not always be smooth, but stormy seas have always held a challenge. May you always remain good sailors in fair or stormy weather. . EDWIN A. HENDRIX, Principal. TEAM HISTORY , Our I946 season turn-out was a big improvement over the previous season. A large number of team aspirants were experienced, a different condition also. Fighting Lions gradually sharpened their claws for the fray, under the watchful eyes of Coach Smith. Roaring over Biggs and Los Molinos in practice games they bogged down in league compe- tition. Arbuckle, last year's record spoiler again this year gummed up the works for the ambitious Lions. The team averaged l5O pounds. Quarterback Charles Flowers was elected team Captain. The coming season will see us change' from the South Side League to the West Side League. Also, our gallant Lions will be starring in ll-man football, with a varsity and a B team. Schools included in this League will be: Anderson, Colusa, Corning, Gridley, Orland, Willows and Live Oak. They roared over every opponent this season loosing only twice. The Lions who were well organized, fought hard in every game. They displayed the finest qualities of a Championship team, sportsmanship and team-work at the head of the list. Coach Smith handled these boys in a super way and shared their success and delight. The B's lost the maior part of their games but showed all kinds of improvements as the season drew to a close. They provided many thrills for the fans and were never in a dull game. Many will be the backbone of next year's quintet. Th C's and D's under the coaching of Mr. Heilmann also started off slow but improved as the season rolled along. They will spark next year's B's. The basketball season this year can be called a near success and next year will show class A material. W. SMITH Graduate San Jose State Second year on coaching staff Baseball Football A-B basketball Couch. Turnout for track here this year was a very bright outlook for the sport. When the group picture was taken for this issue, the squad had many candidates out for positions on the three classifications teams, A, B, C. Track has been neglected in many of the schools of the valley during the war period, locally as well as others. The last real bid for track honors was in l94l when Live Oak took the league championship in the meet at Biggs. This year material goes to press for the Lions Pause before any reports can be on any results, ,but if enthusiasm counts, we predict a good showing for the season. A league meet will be held on May 9, with Live Oak Lions and Cubs being defending champions. Other meets were scheduled before this all-important event. Baseball took a nice upswing here this year with more candidates out for positions on the two teams than was possible to handle. Fifty four candidfites answered the call for the diamond, and had to be cut down to thirty before the season started in earnest. Experience gained in I946 season will be a factor for all, and with equipment being available again, hopes ran high for a better showing than last year. This year the league will include Sutter, Wheatland, Live Oak, East Nicolaus, Princeton, Arbuckle, Williams and Maxwell. .First game of the season was scheduled for Yuba City on March 21.
