GARY PAGE GRAY POTTER Geokciz Votkuar jon RM BOYS' BASKETBALL The 1952-53 boys' basketball team, under the coaching ol John l'Vitt, proved to be one of the most formidable hardwood units ever to repre- sent Litton in the cage sport. Although the boys lost out during the final week of the season in their bid for the fourth place position in the l9th District, the starting live of Go-Captains Gray Potter and George Vol- kert, Gary Page, Joe Ray, and Larry Tillman was rated by many opponents as one of the best in the league. Their race-horse style of play was feared by many opponents, and the boys demonstrated some of the N. I. I..'s best basketball in their Fwmt Row: Ray Dickerson, George Volkert. A bright spot of the season was the sparkling court play of sophomore Phil Hargis and junior joe Ray, who was chosen on one of the All- Nashville teams. The Lions were knocked from tournament contention in the l9th District semifinals by Dt1Pont, following an early round victory over the Antioch Bears. George Volkert was chosen the most valuable player on the team, and Hargis was nominated as the most improved. liuck Row: Bobby Pennington, Gray Potter, I.arry Tilla man, joe Ray, Phil Hargis, Kenneth lVeatherford, Bobby Tillman, Ronald Smith. HA season of superlatives could well describe the 1952 football season as the Isaac Litton Lions roared to the greatest football year in the history of the school. Cliniaxing the fall by being selected the second best aggregation in the state, the Lions, under the able tutelage of Coaches Bob Cummings, John Wfitt, Ronald lN7ebb, and Herschel Moore, ended the regular season's play with a record of nine wins and one defeat-the lone loss being to the state's top-ranking team. The eleven closed an impressive year by de- feating Father Ryan's team in the annual Clinic Bowl tilt Thanksgiving Day in Vanderbilt's Dudley Stadium. Behind the vicious blocking and tackling of a stalwart forward wall, one of the hnest backhelds ever to perform on Hume Marshall Field paced the Lions in their soar to Hhigher ground. Seniors performing in their final season at Litton were Co-Captains Rip Nix and Charles Harmon, Gray Potter, George Volkert, Jerry Kemp, Larry Wray, L. F. McClellan, X'Vilson l'Vest, Wfalter Reasoner, Billy Belcher, Billy Mc- Mahon, Ralph McDonald, Gary Morgan, and john Gordy. Meriting positions on various all-star teams were George Volkert Qthe first player in the his- tory of Nashville high school football to make the All-American squadj, john Gordy, Gray Potter, L. F. McClellan, Rip Nix, and Jerry Kemp. This most eventful football season was ofhcial- ly closed at the football banquet with the pres- entation of the trophies designating Litton as the Wilmer ol' the N.I.L.'s Class AA division. The end of one milestone's in sightg We recollect those years, Some filled with gladness and delight And some perhaps with tears. The memories that we take away Will always prove a treasureg They'll never fail to shift our thoughts To many scenes of pleasure. I And we shall not forget our schoolg To Litton we'll he true, And in the future if we meet We'll cheer the Red and Blue! ' As down the path of life we go Both joy and grief we'll see, But smiles will come with memories of This Class of '53.
