Lepak The first Manawa team to compete on the court in the new fieldhouse finished the confer- se season with a record of 10 wins and 4 losses to wind up in a second place tie with Mar- 1 behind W1ttenberg's champions. Arlln Becker was one of the leading scorers in the con- -ence, and his play earned him a first-team All-Conference berth. Tom Hoffmann and Ronald :trzak were given Honorable Mention. The close of the conference season meant that tournament time was here, and Manawa was st to a sub-district tournament including teams from Bear Creek, Marion, Shiocton, Tiger- 1, Weyauwega, and Manawa. The Wolves defeated Marlon in the finals for the right to meet sholt, the winner of the Amherst sub-district tournament. After defeating Bosholt for the strict Championship, the Wolves met Highly rated Westfield on the Amherst court in a Dis- Lct play-off. A sound defeat of Westfield gave the Wolves the right to enter theSec- anal Tournament at Wisconsin Rapids, the first time in the history of Manawa High School at a team has earned that honor. We drew Stevens Point, eventual State Champions, and its Sn and 6'?' skyscraper centers, as our first-round opponents and fought mightily before we upped the game to this excellent team. Coach B111 Mathwig began the season at the reins until ilness forced him to relinquish a command. 'B' Team Coach Len De Baker directed play from the date of the Wittenberg game home through the remainder of the season. Letter winners included: Seniors Tom Hoffmann, Don Craig, Ronald Kostrzak, Tom Bonikow- a, Allen Bradway, and Jerry Kimber, Juniors Arlin Becker and John Baffing and Sophomores re Peterson and Charles Jepson. The 'Bn Squad also completed one of its best seasons in many years, finishing the season th a 15 won--2 lost record. The reserve squad's only loss came at the hands of Wittenberg 1 Waupaca on their home courts, and those defeats were avenged in. later meetings with ase teams on our home court. Like their big brothers the 'A' Squad, the 'B's' won all of air home games, keeping the new fieldhouse won-lost record spotless. Junior Don Flanagan, phomores Dave Peterson, Charles Jepson, and Carley Lepak, and Freshman Tom Martin led the 's to an average of nearly 40 points r game, while hol6 oonents to30. - g . Led by a star-studded group of seniors and ably assisted by some fine Junior and sophomore talent, Coach Len De Baker's boys stormed thr all opposition, finishing the season with a perfect slate of seven victories and no defeats For their exploits, the team was rated highly by state newspapers all season and wound up 1 the press polls as one of only 13 undefeated, untied teams in the state. Indicative of their offensive and defensive strength, the fighting Wolves amassed 182 point to their opponents' 533 gained a total of 1934 yards to the opponents' 8003 out-first-downs the enemy, 103 to 423 and punted only 10 times all season, forcing their opponents into pun formation 23 times. Behind Quarterback Tom Hoffmann, who directed the team very skillfully, Don Craig and Sophc more Dave Peterson were the chief ground gainers, gaining over 700 of the team's yards betwee them for an average of better than six yards per try. Hoffmann's favorite passing targets wer and Arlin Becker, who caught 21 passes for 360 yards: and fullback John Baffin, who caught 2 for 235 yards. Hoffmann and Becker each scored 7 touchdowns to lead scoring, although Tom' ll extra points gave him a slight edge. A total of 8 boys scored at least one touchdown in th well-balanced scoring attack. The high point of the season was, of course, the Homecoming game with Waupaca, which th Wolves won very very handily, 32-O. Defensive play was superb as the Comets were held to minus yardage for the game. The Wolves' powerful 8-man line, spearheaded by Dave Sturm, Alle Bradway, Verlyn Strebe, Alfred Thiel, and Lee Oppor drove through constantly to nail Waupaca' ball carriers before they were able to get started. Perhaps the most memorable play of the season, and one that will long live in the memory c L.W.H.S. was the last-second scoring play at Marion which gave us a 7-0 victory over the Pigec team. A pass from John Baffin to Tom Hoffmann did the trick, and our perfect record was saved The Wolves dominated the first all-conference team with five selections--center Dave Sturm tackles Allen Bradway and Verlyn Strebeg quarterback Tom Hoffmann, ana halfback Don cra1g. . total of 19 boys were awarded letters for the season, among them all ten of the seniors on th squad. Teammates selected Don Craig as their Most Valuable Player and Tom Hoffmann as Honoran Captain of this year's team. -5u-
