Starting School Smooth opening greets both students, teachers; enrollment shows increase over previous year With no major problems and very few minor ones, the 1986-87 school year opened on Monday, August 25. “It was one of the smoothest openings we’ve had in many years,” Prin- cipal Everett Hawks said. The enrollment at the end of the first week of classes stood at 1,982 students. Of this number, 756 were sophomores, 616 were juniors, and 610 were seniors. Racially, 59 per cent of the student body was black. This was the same percentage of black students as during the previous school year. Total enrollment in the Little Rock School District on the fifth day of classes was 19,020, an increase of 169 students over the previous year’s enrollment at the same time. It was the first time in several years that the Little Rock District had shown an increase in enrollment. Most Central students said they were glad to be back in classes. Seniors especially said they were happy to be back in school and starting their final year. It was the 59th year for Central to be in operation at its present location, 14th and Park Streets.
