1 I ' $ ’■ r1 ltd'll ft ( f aj£ eti r j'J- v y1 ) - U (VJL-aJt'J L$ So i£d. 7 ( I- Just as every one of you in Little Rock Central High School is part of the student body, so are you part of the PIX. Your laughter, your loves, and your activities are all reflected in this yearbook. As you turn through its pages, may you recall the experiences, gay or serious, that you have had this year. The architects of the present building must have known the type of people who would soon fill the halls with happiness and enthusiasm, be- cause they have presented characteristics of every student which they have placed in the statues on the facade of the building. We think these statues represent qualities in you, your character, and your inner feelings. They are Ambition, Personality, Opportunity, and Preparation. Just as the statues represent phases of your I character, we think that Bubba and Babs, our fictitious, yet typical boy and girl, represent your attitude toward life. They demonsrate your out- look toward matters of importance. As you see them living for you throughout the PIX, we be- lieve that you will see yourself also. As you see them, you will see that—YOU ARE THE PIX. We believe that you will wish to preserve this yearbook and cherish it. Then, in the years to come, you will treasure the pictures, the scenes, and the ideas that these pages contain. We sincerely hope that you enjoy the 1955 PIX note, and for the rest or your life. McLEAN Vice Chairman BOARD OF EDUCATION The Little Rock Board of Education is composed of men and women elected by the voters of the city to plan and direct the educational development of all the city's children. Serving unselfishly, they have, for many years, succeeded in maintaining the highest standard in the instructional staff, in general physical plants, and in all round program for pupil growth physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually. The continuous growth and the national rating of Little Rock schools are a tri- bute to the high character and the services of the men and women ivho compose the Board of Education. DR. EDWIN N. BLOSSOM, Superintendent of Schools Continually striving to better Little Rock through its youth, Superintendent Vir- gil T. Blossom leads and advises the entire school personnel. His confidence in the future and his willingness to help others are inspirations not only to the other members of the school board, but also to leading business men and women of the community. Little Rock Central High School owes much of its progress to Virgil T. Blossom, 1955 Superintendent of Schools. 7 v % J N, . Vi 4 S’ V I % V • v v V J ) om£a- . X 3 The quality of Ambition is best expressed in our faculty members. They have all achieved at least part of their ambition and are now suc- cessful instructors. They are encour- aging you and me to do our best. They stimulate our ambition. From our faculty members we may be in- spired to develop our otvn ambition and abilities into something far be- yond our present comprehension. Bubba and Babs may seem to be in trouble here, but they will profit by this experience. All teachers love apples, don't they? See if you don't find, in the pages that follow, a group of trustworthy and ambitious adults. 10 Faculty 7« i ' f V' N£5 ■v v ; . It is grad- uation day. when we. the seniors of high school, must realize that we are no longer chil- dren. After graduation, we jump into the lives of adult men and women. Our senior year is preparation for the difficult step. During this time, we are given many opportuni- ties to develop our minds, our bodies, and our personalities. Our senior year is a ne- cessity. Some day we will thank LRCHS. Yes. that day, when, with happy hearts and misty eyes, ice leave Little Rock Central High School, we will be very grateful for the preparation we made here. On the following pages ice will see the graduates, the well- rounded. yet a little green and immature adults of 955. 20 21 The Most Beautiful High School In America' LITTLE ROCK CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL 14th and Park Streets Little Rock, Arkansas Phone FRanklin 5 1285 May 1, 1955 Dear Seniors: The 1955 PIX makes another fine volume for Little Rock Central High School's pictorial record with much emphasis on the accomplishments of the Class of 1955. The story of the Class of 1955 is one of impressive achievements. Not the least of these is the fact that the members of the class from all sections of Little Rock and Pulaski County have learned to work together as a group, under their chosen otticers, for the accomplishments and objec- tives of the class. In doing so, they have developed new friendships and have discarded outgrown rivalries and old prejudices to develop new and wider loyalties. The individual accomplishments of the members of the Class of 1955 have been as noteworthy as their group achievements. In scholarship, so many have excelled that honor organizations have gone to a record enrollment. In citizenship, no class has had more to boast of. Members of the class have worked in service groups for the good of the school and the community never before equalled. In talent--scientific, musical, forensic, dramatic, litcrary-- the class can provide more than its quota. And each member of the class can feel a justifiable pride in his individual achievement, graduation from a high school which ranks with the best in the nation. As we say Good Luck to this, one of the last classes in which all geographical sections of Little Rock will be together in Central High School, we hope that the Fighting Tiger, the emblem whose unbowed spirit resists defeat and glories in victory, passed on to you by those who have gone before, will symbolize your courage and determination as you face the future. If the students of the present and the future will emulate the patterns you have set of wholesome activities and of scholastic attainment, Little Rock Central High School will move forward to greatly increased educational leadership and responsibility. Homeroom also means reading of the Bible and the daily bulletin. These things are routine. We don’t notice anything unusual about homeroom. Later, no doubt, there will be a chuckle and maybe a lump in our throat as ice recall our experiences of those early morning hours. As we turn through the next eleven pages, we will see the girl who so patiently helped with our math assignment, the fellow who always read the daily bulletin. the girl who brought the well-received Tigers into homeroom twice a month, and the boy who always seemed to be collecting money for something or another. Let’s see if ice don’t recall some very fond memories. 60 «•: 0' k vV y f f 5 , % i:®. omerooms 61 Homerooms 11A HOME ROOM 312-MISS LAURA PEDERSEN Left to Right: Top Row: George Adams, Bob Alexander, Albert Arendt, L. Classes come in all shapes and sizes . ... all sorts and types .... all grades and groups. Sometimes they seem to last forever, but some- times they seem to hurry by. Naturally without them, there would be no school. The teachers who drive us the hardest are the ones to whom we will be most thankful in the years to come; and we will hold good thoughts as we recall the helpful and consider- ate advisers. Maybe we spent our classtime as did Bubba and Bobs .... preparing . . . uh . . uh . . well . . Babs is preparing herself for life. Where is the next party? . . . I need some volunteers for the tele- phone committees . . . Will the meeting please come to order. Clubs form the backbone of Little Rock Central High School’s pupils social life. This is the way we develop our per- sonality. The clubs are our outlet from strenuous studies and trivial worries. The organizations have in them a few leaders, many followers, and very many happy pupils. I know that we, like Bubba and Babs. are very eager to see them so here they are. The highlights in our school year may have been the dances we attended, the scavenger hunts we were dunked at, or the happy hours we spent in chapel each morning. For Bubba and Babs, it was a dance, as you see here. There are many more activities at LRCHS. and most of them are recorded in the next few pages. Maybe our joys will be recorded in the memory pages that follow. 88 Inter-Club Council Sponsor: Mrs. Helena Quigley Top Row from Left: Brinton Ramoly, Eddie Hicks, Stan Daven- port, Rodney Jones, and Michael Johns Third Row: Betty Weiss, Ralph Goldman, Charles Vines, Robert Spector, Linda Holland, and Margie Compton Second Row: Sally Derbyshire, June Bourne, Carolyn Lee, Ellen Hawbecker, and Polly Duke Bottom Row: Jan Goodman, Beverly Cross, Letha Smith, Pat Patterson, Janet Spears, and Carol Tucker Activity Shots Bottom Left: Billy Doyle White placing coronation robes on ln,er-Club Council luncheon Presided over by the Valentine King and Queen, Jerry Hedges and Elsie RalPh Goldman Shipp 90 National Honor Society Sponsor: Miss Orlana Hensley Top Row: Fred Brandon, Ralph Goldman, William Shepherd, Neil Harper, Miles McPcek, Eddie Copeland, James Slaughter, Tommy Ashcraft, Jimmy Lee Harley, and Herbert Reed Seventh Row: Charles Thornton, Richard Jenkins, Herbert Rule, Billy Doyle White, Eddie Hicks, Carroll Lockridge, Charles Vines, Louis Henderson, Eugene Pfeifer, and Joe Hicks Sixth Row: Frank Dodson, Jere Johnson, Bill Perdue, Robert Hendrix, Jimmie Smith, Hoyt Pyle, Bobby Baird, Robin Jones, Pat Hurley, and Gene McNabb Fifth Row: Anne Wait, Ann Mack, Carolyn Giles, Ann Dick- inson, Rose Mae Bogan, Diane McMillan, Betty Weiss, Pat Porter, Gail Taylor, and Judy Barnes Fourth Row: Margie Browne, Carol Craig, Jane Parkin, Audrey Massey, Jo Ann Blancett, Joyce Holland, Donna Hopkins, Helen Ruth Scott, Raymell Pound, and Marilyn Dallas Third Row: Betty Emery, Betty Cleveland, Deronda Tucker, Karo Kampbell, Mary Ann Spoils, Doris Dodd, Barbara Henry, Helen Lawbaugh, Martha Harris, and Joan Rae Dodd Second Row: Jo Ann Alves, Elsie Hay, Jean Ray, Kay Smith, Mary Thomas, Jan Graham, Gertrude Cromwell, Virginia Rankin, Lorraine Harris, and Sue Cottrell Bottom Row: Jill Walton, Nikki Polychron, Sue Walters, Carmen Fuller, Mary Frances Jones, Virginia Steinert, Jane Saunders, Helen Moss, Shirley Grayson, and Jane Holmes 91 LRCHS Key Club Sponsor: Winston Faulknor Honorary Sponsor: Principal Joss W. Not every one in LRCHS is pictured in this division, but they are all worthy of this honor in their own way. We may be connected with the next section. Maybe we cast the deciding vote in the election of the Tiger Beauty Maids. Maybe ice were the campaign manager of the Student Body President. No two people are identical. Bubba and Babs are admiring each other’s photographs, because they merited a place in this desired spot of the PIX. At any rate, the pictures that follow are photographs of the pride of Little Rock Central High School. 124 125 JIMMY BURKETT DIANE McMILlAN 12 h Grade Representative Vice President Student Council Officers TERRY WATSON 11th Grade Representative ROY LEE HIGHT 10th Grade Representative President of IRCHS Student Body 127 Student Council Members Seniors Twelfth Grade Representatives Studont Council Top Row: Eddie Copeland, Jimmy Burkett, Brooks Robinson, Charles Vines, and Bob Baker Third Row: Ramon Sharp, Bob Boyd, Robert Castleberry Tommy Ashcraft, John lile, and Bobby Baird Second Row: Diane McMillan, Linda Worden, Linda Holland, Eleanor Massie, and Doris Dodd Bottom Row: Lorraine Funk, Sarah Newland, Rosclyn Parrish, Jan Goodman, Mary Thomas, and Jackie Howell Juniors Eleventh Grade Representatives Student Council Top Row from Left: Mike Johns, Raymond Hunter, Donald Morehart, Jerry Smith, Charles Carter, and Jerry Wilcox Third Row from Left: Leslie Grady, Bud 8rown, Howard Roland, Jimmy Wallace, Terry Watson, and Jimmy Hefley Second Row from Left: Jimmy Baird, Richard Tackett, Madra Ray, Linda Davis, Beverly Finch, and Vicki Park Bottom Row from Left: Beverly Sanford, Bucky Polk, Delrena Conner, Opal Mitchell, Jean Kizzia, and Pat Lynch Sophomores Tenth Grade Representatives Studont Council Top Row from Left: Jim Carvell, Phillip Keesc, Bill Shipp, Frances Mitchell, and Linda Houston Third Row from Left: Laura Hammock, Sylvia Swaim, Ann Trieschmann, Sherron Sipes, Pat Tuley, and Betty Curtis Second Row from Left: Kay Edwards, Nancy Plowman, Nona Proctor, Gwen McGee, Phyllis Alexander, and Carolyn Fitzgerald Bottom Row from Left: Sarah Hood, Gail Bosson, Jerry Masters, Jerry Wilbourn, Roy Lee Hight, and Mac Core 128 Principal s Cabinet in session Sponsors Mrs. Margaret Reiman Mrs. Helen Conrad, assistant Standing, from left: Bobby Baird, Student Body President; Jimmy Burkett, 12th grade representative; Diane McMillan, vice president; Terry Watson, 11th grade representative,- and Roy Lee Hight, 10th grade representative Seated: Mr. Jess W. The Tigers' devastating ground attack piled up a total of 305 yards rushing to wear down the Grizzlies almost completely. Fort Smith had a total of 124 yards, rushing. Scoring laurels were distributed evenly for the Tigers with Darryl Herbert, Ralph Gold- man, Hammond Satterfield, and Scott Woodmansee making one touchdown each. Although Halfback Jim Wetherington did not make a touchdown, he converted after all four touch- downs and played a fine game on defense. Playing an outstanding defensive game was Darryl Herbert who consistently came up from his linebacker position to make key tackles. Also playing well defensively were Richard Bell, Guard Richard Maxwell, and Halfbacks Bill Jones and Ralph Goldman. LRCHS vs. Istrouma, Baton Rouge Top row, from left. Roaring back the next week, the Bengals downed the hapless Hot Springs Trojans, 52-0, on October 1. Texarkana, Arkansas was Little Rock's next out-of-town foe, the Tigers winning, 27-7, on October 15. Then came El Dorado on October 22 and Tilghman High of Paducah, Kentucky on November 28. Little Rock won these games 21-7 and 28-12, respectively. imm Homecoming Activities Top row, from left. Queen was Kay Smith; her maids of honor were Tharon Criger, Jan Graham, Nedra Dodds, and Gwen Pounders. Other maids were Phyllis Alexander, Margie Brown, Kay Edwards, Charlene Grady, Martha Hackett, Annette Hoover, Martha Maley, Kathryn Polk, Nikki Polychron, and Ann Strawn. The Gold Jacket Club formed the aisle which the maids, maids of honor, and queen make their entrance. The game climaxed a week of activities urging the Tigers to beat Fort Smith. After a slow start, the Little Rock Tigers crushed the Memphis Central Warriors in the second half 14-0, on Ocfobeh 29, before a little less than 3000 shivering fans in Tiger Stadium. The Bengal's rushing attack rolled up a total of 240 yards compared to the Warrior's 97. The Tigers completed three out of nine passes for 25 yards. The Warriors connected on three out of 13 for a total of 66 yards. Fans saw a fine display of punting by Memphis' Don Griggs who punted seven times for an average of 42 yards per punt. But all his fine kicks were of no avail, for every time he would get off a good long one, the Tigers would quickly grind out yardage tc. escape from their own territory. It was the Tigers' sixth win of the season, and it evened their record against out-of-state competition at 2-2. 165 Big Seven Activities Top left, Robert Castleberry and Calvin Moore pull down Bessemer's star halfback. Members of the first offensive team from Little Rock were Tackle Frank Plegge, Guard Richard Maxwell, and Halfback Jim Wetherington. On the first defensive team were Tackle Eddie Copeland, Guard Warner St. John and Linebacker Darryl Herbert. Darryl Herbert is the only man on the Tiger squad to be chosen two consecutive years. Little Rock Central High Tigers began their football season in fine style as they over- ran the Memphis Treadwell Eagles, 34-13, before 7,000 fans in Tiger Stadium on Sep- tember 10. The Tigers three ace running backs, Darryl Herbert, Jim Wctherington, and Ralph Goldman, proved to be too much for the hapless Eagles as they paced the Tigers to a 34 to 0 lead at the end of the third quarter. Herbert led the scoring for the Tigers with two touchdowns, with Wctherington, Goldman, and End Richard Bell adding one each. Wetherington converted for the extra point after the last four TD's. Although the touchdowns were evenly spaced through all four periods, Little Rock's greatest show of power came in the second half when the Tigers scored three TD's. The Bengals were sparked by Halfback Jim Wethcrington who made touchdown runs of 58 and 51 yards, respectively. It was the Tigers' eighth win of the season and fifth win in the Big Seven conference. The Bessemer, Alabama, Purple Tigers came to life in the second quarter behind their brilliant Halfback Tommy Lorino to down the hard-fighting Little Rock Central High School Tigers, 20-7, on a mud-soaked terrain in Tiger Stadium on November 19. Lorino literally did everything for the Alabama aggrega- tion. He had been heralded as one of the finest backs to come out of Alabama in years,- he certainly proved it. Little Rock was by no means humiliated by the defeat. The local Bcngals played one of their finest games of the season and might have reversed the verdict if they had taken advantage of a couple of scoring opportunities. Little Rock out-gained Bessemer on the ground, by 209 yards to 142 for the purple crew. The difference being Lorino and Bessemer's fine passing attack. Coach Snitz Smider's team completed 7 of 12 passes compared to 3 of 15 by the Bengals. LRCHS vs. Texarkana, Texas From top to bottom. Texarkana, Texas, Tigers squeezed by the Little Rock Tigers by a narrow 2-0 margin September 17, before 5,000 drizzled-soaked fans in Tiger Stadium. The Texan's two points came midway in the first quarter when little Rock stopped a Texarkana drive on Little Rock's 40, where Don Carroll punted to the Little Rock 5. Jimmy Martin, Little Rock safety man, caught the ball and was immediately smeared and pushed into the end zone by Texarkana Guard Kenneth Green. It was the first time that Little Rock had failed to score since 1947 when they fought to a scoreless tie with El Dorado. Little Rock's defensive stars were Halfbacks Ralph Goldman and Billy Jones, who often came up from their halfback positions to make important tackles on the line of scrimmage. Also playing well for Little Rock were Halfbacks Jim Wctherington, and Jimmy Martin, Tackle Frank Plegge, and Guard Richard Maxwell. A Good Season Ends Top row, from left. The occasion was marked by a super-abundance of food and the lack of formality. As is always the custom, the football players themselves were the first to go down the line, heaping two plates each with everything good to eat, including baked ham, roast turkey and dressing, cranberry sauce and all other kinds of relish, beans, salads, stuffed eggs and other edibles too numerous to mention. Milk poured from the pitcher enabled the boys to drink their fill. Athletic director, Earl F. Quigley, was in charge of the Page 204). banquet. (See Pictures on Top row, from left. Lord of Boston University, nationally recognized authority on the relation of education to salary.) The originol data have been evaluated by the Equitable Life Insurance Company of Iowa to conform to the changed index of the purchasing power of the current dollar. 1. The Untrained Man: He goes to work at 14 and reaches his maximum income at 40 with a life average of less than $2,400 a year. Since his income is largely dependent on physical strength and manual dexterity, it falls off at 50 or earlier, often to a point below the level of self-support. More than 50 out of every 100 untrained workers are dependent upon others after the age of 60. Total Earnings From 14 to 60, About $110,403. 2. The High School Graduate: He goes to work at 18, passes the maximum of the untrained man within ten years, rises steadily to his own maximum at 50 with a life average of $4,000 annually and declines but little thereafter. Total Earnings from 18 to 60, About $168,000. 3. The Business School Graduate: His permanent earnings begin at 22. By the time he is 30 his income equals that of the high school graduate at 40, and continues to rise. Since his income is dependent upon his mental ability and training and is constantly improved by practice, it increases rather than diminishes. The graduate in business administration reaches his maximum at 60 and has a life average income of $1 1,000 annually. Total Earnings from 22 to 60, $300,000 to $418,000. For fifty years, Draughon School of Business, Little Rock, Arkansas, has accepted the responsibility of supplying business and industry within our area with properly trained office personnel. Won't you read and study this report and ask yourself this question: May I also receive profits and benefits by attending Draughon School of Business, Little Rock?
