Entered from Pu- Hard work never scared him' Sen ior Poetry Thoughts on Graduation THE GRADUATE Howard Butler The greatest thrill of all the year Is gradually drawing near; To lead the band and proudly say, “I am a man today.” HAIL, BROTHER, and FAREWELL Polly Stacy The short hour, the short time, the short day On swift, but sad or happy wings do fly; And friends leave each other to go on their wav With perhaps just a little sigh: For we know not where, or when, We ever shall meet again; And yet for this we pray, That we may meet again, some happy day. Many years have passed one by one Since first we met and knew each other; Our long sought for goal we have won. And we have learned to love our sister and our brother. The ways of the world hove been known Since the beginning of Time And seeds of joy or sorrow have been sown Both yours and mine. We want to see th ' world for our- selves No other can sec it for us. We'll leave our good deeds on the Time shelves, So those who came after may know us. And so in the future. Each one of us must go his way; And know not where, or when We ever shall meet again. But for this we’ll pray. That we may meet again, some happy day. Someday we'll meet again, face to face In that beautiful Eternal Land, Where shines the Master's face. Where deeds are worked on a place More stable than this earthly sand. This is Youth’s night— It is Youth for whom the lights are lit; Not for Childhood—nor Adoles- cence— For Childhood lies deaid ‘neath a pile of old school books And shinny-sticks and broken skates and headless dolls; And Adolescence is dying—dying— This is Youth's night— And Youth sits quietly for the first time in weeks. Realizing that whatever is done now Must be done with purpose; Must be done with firmness and de- cision. Youth realizes, yes. a little sadly. That this clay which he must mold Is not so pliable—nor so clean— As it once was; But he strides forward to grasp it— No hesitancy here, above all: No weakness! So I cry a toast: To American Youth: Born in equality, bred up in Truth; Brave in misfortune, bold to face life; Flinching back not from Adver- sity's knife; Thrown down, like that giant of ages past, He arises each time more strong than the last. So I cry a toast: To American Youth! For this is Youth’s night— April 11, 1938 Gene Haun SCHOOL DAYS By Howard Butler Day after day for twelve long years I've been in this place of know- ledge! And all that I've received in all this time, Just leads up to college. But I’ll go on for four more years, To make way for my profession. And now I'm telling you There’s nothing I can do. But study these mean old lessons. Now I am out and ready to shout. And tell them I'm no bum. I meant to be a preacher, but they made me a teacher. Back where I started from. D'S AND E’S By Thornton Burns I think that I shall never see, A grade better than a D”. D that looks a me all day. And says— More work -and less of play”. A “D that may in midterm be, A minus or an ugly E”. D's” are made by fools like me. But who—I asked—can make a B . With my profound and deepest apologies to Joyce Kilmer. Thus spakcth the humble re- reporter— O. Magic Mirror, allow us to see This graduating class in 1953.” The mirror answered— In fifteen years, in 1953, I see— The happy newlyweds. Dr. and Mrs. Cunningham, who after fif- teen years of waiting has learned his profession and was settled in business, were marrie i this month. While on the subject of marriage Algie Hampton was at last wedded to a rich St. Louis widow, who was formerly Miss Sally Wright. In the business world I sec Eu- gene Bailey who is making himself a name and fortune In his inter- national accounting office. After a hard struggle Howard Butler has finally risen from a popcorn boy to manager of our local theaters. Es- tes Coleman is now managing a concession stand at Madison Square Garden, and doing well, we hear, while across the street Elia Zini is the owner of the most popular restaurant in town. Billy Moore Clark, lawyer for the Herbert Thomas Insurance Firms, is now suing Jack Elliot, taxi driver, for accidentally hitting one of his clients. The ca. e js now in the supreme court and the de- cision depends upon the vote of the youngest member on the bench. Tom Burrow. Justice Burrow has recently been appointed by President Ord Kim- zey, who defeated the Democratic nominee. Clyde Campbell, in the last election. At the same time Miss Carolyn Buckley was elected as the second woman ever to be in the senate. And Mr. Kimzey appointed James Hill. Secretary of State and Robert Field, Secretary of the Treasury. In the night life we find Lee Fis- cr crooning with Evelyn McKim- my's all-girl band. At the time be- ing. they are engaged at the Tro- caedro, now owned by Jack Drees. Other performers are Lucy Guest (who is also under contract for the Chase and Sanborn Hour), singer, and the well-known and talented dancer. Miss Henrietta Wilson. I see at this same club one of the more popular society women of the day. Miss Mary Phillips on the arm of her still faithful admirer, the owner of the club. At one of the smaller tables I see C. L. Chambers, the U. S. tennis champion for the last three years, alone as usual. Entering. I see the world famous actress of Broadway and Hollywood. Miss Dorothy Hinton. She is es- corted by her constant companion and expert makeup artist, Jim Briscoe. At the same table are sev- eral of the brightest stars in the theater world. On Miss Hinton’s right is seated Henry Hodges, actor, who is said to have the largest fan mail in the colony. Next to him, his date. Miss Sarah Massenberg who is one of the most beloved and cap- able actresses on the stage. Dorothy Harden. Another well known face is that of J. O. Albright, character actor, and Jim Hall known as the second Bob Burns. Randall Falk, Jr., is now a fam- ous Rabbi in New York, and Mary Borden is an Evangelist. In the fields of journalism Mary Barbara Shuffield has risen high. She is now editor of the New York Times. Other members of this staff are Mayneal McCoy, front page edi- tor; and Carolyn Weisiger. is an able reporter. It is rumored that Richard Allen is still hoping that a scoop will come his way and he’ll get his lucky break. Working for Uncle Sam are Naval Commander Joe Mano; chief of en- gineers. Matt Jones; and French Conley, army flier. In New York Miss Betty Ruth Dortch has set up an art studio of her own. Dorothy Harden and Joyce Reid hold the positions of her as- sistants. While in this same city William Pace and Geraldine Chand- ler are now singing in the world famous opera Madam Butterfly. I see Lowell Martlndale as dean of athletics in Notre Dame. He has as his coaches Wesley Bernard, track coach: Leon Hoffman, foot- ball coach; and Myrl Hall, basket- ball mentor. With glasses on their noses these Masters and Misses have settled down to teaching; Mildred James, Gertrude Jarell. Marian McClain, T. P. Fleming and Elmore Lee. The former Susan Keliy is now Mrs. Wright, wife of the famous trans-Atlantic pilot, while Jean Mac- Duff is happily married to an oil magnate of Oklahoma. Gene Farrell and Tony Bishop re- signed to be married in the spring. John McAllister and Ewin Her- ron are now doing a great deal in the field of botany. They are known the world over for their unusual discoveries and experiments with hot house flowers. In Madison Square Garden at the big mid-winter boxing carnival, I see featherweight champion Cecil Red, challenging the new comer. Gene Haun. The bout is predicted to turn out in Red's favor for it is rumored that Gene would rather wield a pen than his fist. He is well-known in the literary world, however, boxing is his hobby. Hendrix Bowen has risen to the assistant manager of King’s drug store, but still he is sometimes forced to swallow his dignity and hop cars. A new' U-Sock-Em golf course has just been opened on the other side of town with Charles Wade as its manager. Dr. and Mrs. Har- old Bryan are said to be two of his steady customers. I see—and here the magic mir- ror's voice trailed off and we real- ized that our time was up. But we did catch a glimse into the fu- ture of some of these graduates and w’c hope we are able to see a few of them in fifteen years from the day of their graduation. Well. 529. we’ve plowed our row. and cooked our goose, paddled our canoe, made our beds and cakes! It took us three joyful years to do it, and now whether we eat our cakes, or whether anything will come up in our rows will be seen. As far as the past goes, when we recall our moves from the very first frightened day in LRHS till now. we kind of swell up inside and arc sort of proud to think that we have given something of benefit to the old faithful school that drove us and poked us and gave so much to us these three short happy years. Our history began when we. thinking ourselves grains of sand or maybe drops in LRHS' bucket, stumbled up the wide sweep of steps and saw for the first time Opportunity. Preparation. Ambi- tion. Personality staring at us from their pedestals over the entrance, and when we saw for the first time the “big bosses of our three year lives. All of us have answered, in some way. these four challenges in our school work and in our activ- ities among our friends. In all fields the senior class has made its mark. Its tale is told. The officers of the Senior Clas are: Tom Burrow, president: he is also a varsity letter man in foot- ball and track. Joyce Reid, vice- president: secretary of NHS. too. Carolyn Buckley, secretary: she is a debater and vice-president of stu- dent council. These officers took over the leadership of the class in March when they were elected by the Seniors. On the gridiron the Tigers scor- ed high! They beat the Zebras 13 to 12 in the game in ’36. Lowell Marti ndale was captain. He and Leon Hoffman were in the game. To repeat—W E BEAT PINE BLUFF! Members of the Tiger squad who will leave our eleven are Binks Bushmiacr. Wesley Bernard. J. Lin- den Rainwater. John Russell. Harry Carter. Alton Foster, and Roy Dwyer. Lowell Martindale in Little Rock athletics has stood out brilliantly. During the '35. '36. '37 seasons he was on the varsity squad, one year making all state full back. In '36, and '37 Lowell was captain, receiv- ing the Most Valuable Player Award, and All-State Quarter- back. Tennis balls for the glory of it have sprung from the rackets of Albert Gannaway. Bob Gray, Marietta Castlebery. Virginia Lee Hensley. Herbert Thomas, second singles in Arkansas '37. John McAllister for English. Bill Pace for Chemistry. Charles Keaton for Algebra. Gene Haun for Spanish. Gene Haun won first place in the United States in a UDC essay contest. Billy Moore Clark was picked as one of the ten national winners in a Quill and Scroll con- test this year. Here at home an outstanding award goes to Henry Willms. for distinctive work in science, he re- ceived the Bauch and Lomb award. The Tiger staff during these three years has reared in the Jour- nalism way each of the six mem- bers of its Editorial Board; it has seen them spring from buck private reporters to editors. The present members of the board are: Mary Barbara Shuffield. chairman. Billy Moore Clark. Mayneal McCoy. Jane Marshall Keats. Jean MacDuff, Anne McCall, and Virginia Harrison. Lowell Martindale is Sports Editor and Randall Falk. Jr. is Business Manager. Also for Journalism interests May- neal McCoy. Jean McDuff. and Clark Fisher motored to Des Moines. This year schools from all sections of Arkansas sent representatives to Little Rock for the fifth annual Journalism Day. and for the Second Annual State Convention of Na- tional Honor Societies. 12A's play- ed many of the parts of the days activities. Among the seniors were Billy Moore Clark, president of the Quill and Scroll and NHS. and Mary Barbara Shuffield. chair- man of the Editorial Board, and Randall Falk. Algie Hampton, Paul Jones. Mer- lin Kilbury, and Tom Curruthers have been our student managers. In Music circles LRHS has made its rounds also.
