V . fin- --,ag SENIOR CLASS HISTORY enrollment of thirty ive A few weeks after school had commenced we held a class meeting and elected our oflicers After much debating we selected our colors flower and motto Miss Miars was chosen as the sponsor to guide us through the year Many parties and picnics were enjoyed during the year That we were very active was shown by our representation on both boys and girls basketball teams also by our help in making the operetta Cherry Blossoms a success At the close of school we bade our classmates goodbye and were all looking forward to our reunion to the place the following autumn Upon arriving at school on the 'drst day of our Sophomore year we were grieved to learn that many of our members had deserted u at the Hrst part We now numbered twenty six New oilicers were elected and our old sponsor rechosen for our second year This year our class was pleased to welcome two new members to our happy throng These were Allene Roper of Zanesville and Frederick Hofer of Blanchester This year the girls captain as well as several players for both basketball teams were chosen from our group On the opening day of our Junior year we learned that five more members of our class had fallen by the wayside leaving twenty one on the class roll Miss Hoppe was selected as sponsor for the third year This was by far the busiest year of our High School life. Besides our basketball and other activities such as the operetta In Old Louisana for which we furnished many of the characters which made it an out standing feature of the year we were engaged in the business of obtaining money with which to entertain the senior class at a banquet. Everyone assured us that our crowning fete of the year the Junior Senior banquet was a great success. At the end of this year s work we welcomed the vacation which would rest us for our fourth and inal year. The last year started with but eighteen members sixteen being of the original class. This year our sponsor was Mr. Porter. Again we were called upon for players on the basketball teams and for characters for the third operetta, Sunbonnet Sue. We decided to issue an annual, Morrownian Memoirs. The staff was chosen and everyone became busily engaged. Many Senior parties and also the JuniorfSenior banquet. were greatly enjoyed. At last Graduation Day dawned-a day of mingled joy and sadness as we were all sorry to see the old class separated, each to follow his own path in life. ' 7 1222 Morrownian Memoirs I! Immediately I recognized the pilot as Gerald Mengle who always boasted that he would be the class bachelor but he had broken the record a year after graduation. I then took a boat to Detroit and to my amazement I recognized the tall stately figure of our side center Eunice Ayers as Captain and Sadie Lilley as her assistant. To pass the time I visited the Ford plant where I found John Hill who had just completed an invention modeled from the parts of his old Ford. I was not a little surprised when I was told that Hallie Whitacre was making a tour of the United States lecturing on The Ways and Means of a Happy Home. After this I took a fast train to Cincinnati. The train was wrecked and I became unconscious but upon awakening I looked into the smiling eyes of Olive Slade who was now a nurse at Christ Hospital. In a few hours I was on my way home. Three miles out of Morrow I saw a small house with green shutters. To make the picture clearer flocks of poultry were here and there. Upon entering the house I found Zelia Corwin and her husband. I arrived in Morrow at night but my Erst thoughts were of my Alma Mater so I set forth upon my destination. As I approached I saw a light in the gym where six green and gold clad figures, under the eiiicient guidance of their coach, Edna Whitacre, were fighting their way to victory over an old opponent. The next morning I dressed in haste and set forth to End the last of my school' mates, Reba Coe. After much inquiry and searching I found her living in a beautiful home well upon the road to a peaceful, matrimonial life. At last I had seen them all-the schoolmates of my High School days-the best days of my life-the ones that I had loved best. But now I must go. -Rhoda M. She has been left in charge of Mr. and Mrs. Abijah Scrogges, a skinflint couple who have starved and stinted her. As the play opens, Mrs. Henry Colman, the president of the State Federation of Music Clubs, arrives in the village to conduct a contest for certain scholarships in music. She is accompanied by her daughter, Barbara, her son, Bob, and his chum, Jerry. The contest is held in the garden of Mr. and Mrs. Meadows, who are pros' perous and respected farmers, and whose daughter, Miranda, is among the contestants. On learning of the contest, Sue timidly approaches the ladies in charge and asks to be allowed to take part. They are willing, but Mrs. Scrogges, encouraged by her daughter, Evalina, harshly refuses to allow it insisting that she has no proper clothes for such an affair, and that she is needed for the endless dishfwashing of the Scrogges' household. Sue is discouraged, but on meeting Barbara, Bob and jerry, she tells her story and enlists their sympathy and support. Moreover, she tells them that she believes her parents left her some sort of property, but that the Scrogges refuse to divulge the nature of it. They promise to call on Ezra McSpavin, the village constable, and persuade him to intercede in the name of the law. The opening of the second act discloses all the young people of the village gathered for the music contest. Various members of the group take part until Mrs. Meadows declares that the list has been finished, but Mrs. Colman on consulting her paper, finds one more name, and announces Susan Clifton. The chorus is surprised at this unfamiliar name, but while they are speculating, Sue appears gorgeously dressed in the height of fashion complete even to jewels and a fan, having been completely outfitted in secret by the sympathetic Barbara. She sings her solo and is immediately awarded the prize. Bob Colman, carried away by her beauty and charm immediately offers his heart and hand, but Sue, supposing that his interest is based on sympathy for her poverty and misfortune, refuses to listen, saying that she would be willing to consider him if only she were wealthy and independent. Bob goes in quest of the constable, and meanwhile Jerry and Barbara come to a romantic agreement and the chorus gathers to dance in their honor. Constable McSpavin arrives to say that he has searched the Scrogges home, and found a dispatch box containing Sue's effects, and among them is a deed to a town lot in Los Angeles, which proves to be of immense value. This proof of property removes the last barrier to the match, and the curtain falls on the prospect of a double wedding. Ample humor is afforded by various comic types, including Mr. Scrogges, the henfpecked husband, Jerry, the breezy college youth, Evalina, the shrewish vixen, and Reuben McSpavin the simple son of -Con' stable McSpavin. That evening they left school arm in arm and each was simply dying with sup pressed excitement Barbara dropped the first hint by asking casually Know anything? Yes just loads' replied Phyllis and immediately she launched into a discussion of school events including the inevitable he said and she said She ended with a remark about Miss Hasting the new teacher who had come to fill out the term Isnt she just adorable? she said Barbara was very much interested in all this discussion but in her mind was the epi sode of the note She just then noticed a small end of green ribbon identical with the piece which she was carrying in her pocket peeping from the covers of Phyllis s Soci ology book She quickly snatched it out and then reaching in her own pocket she held up the two pieces The two girls compared notes on how they had received them Phyllis said that she was standing in a dark cor ier of the assembly when someone rudely jostled her and before she had a chance to give that person her candid opinion of her she had gone and left her holding in her hand that note Barbara had found hers in her Civics book and she had been so excited over it that she hadn t done a thing all day Phyllis was dubious about going but at last Barbara persuaded her to go Friday evening found them waiting impatiently for eight o clock to come They decided to meet at the corner drug store and go together. At seven thirty they were seated at one of the small tables slowly consuming that enticing drink ' coco cola. They had not been able to discover anyone else who was going so they hoped to reach the Shamrock a little early in order that they might see exactly who was there. However upon entering the theater they were immediately shown to a reserved section where about a dozen girls were seated. After their eyes had become accustom ed to the dark theater they looked the crowd over and found that all of them were Seniors and that seated two rows in front of them was Miss Hastings. All during the play an air of suppressed excitement hung over the party. What was the meaning of it all? As the play drew to a close word was given to go to the Candy Shoppe next door. After being ushered to one of the private rooms their orders were taken. Miss Hastings then arose and said: 1 You know girls a secret organization was beginning to show signs of being de veloped in our school and so I was asked by your principal to see what I could do with you. I have formed this plan and if you like it you may use it. Why not have a sorority? But you know this is a democratic high school in a democratic country, so why should you want to have an exclusive sorority? I do not mean that we should have everyone in it, but we will make qualifications such that only the best and peppiest girls may belong. Of course we will have parts of it a secret and you make it as mysterious as you care to. Now do you wish to say anything? Enthusiasm reigned. Of course we want it. - Why not? - Isn't she darling? It is needless to say that the new sorority was a success and the members were the most popular girls in school because of the snappy parties they gave. -Allene Roper y' 'Z .. Most everyone would be interested in knowing of its struggle for championships. In the year of 1925 and 1926 a very good team represented Morrow High, but in the semi finals of the County Tournament it was defeated by Franklin. By this defeat they were forced to take third place. But still they did not give up but determined to do better the following year. The next year due to their determination and fighting spirit they played Franklin in the finals but were defeated by a small margin. Thus they had climbed up the ladder one more step and now stood second in the county. The season of 1927 and 1928 brought out one of the best teams that Morrow High has ever had. With greater determination than before they entered the tournament and by a large margin defeated their old opponent, Franklin, and were proclaimed County Champions. Not a single-defeat was handed the girls during the entire year. The present year showed the same old spirit and the only thing that caused even a slight pause in their progress was the removal of two old players because their four years had expired. Their successors showed real ability and during the last semester held their respective position down as well as any player on the team. Only one defeat was suffered by the girls during the entire season. At the tournament our team was again victorious so Morrow High girls are still Champions. Although four valuable players are leaving we know that Morrow High possesses students that have basketball ability. We are sure that the oncoming team will possess the same old fighting spirit and keep for them- selves the envied title of Champions YEMEN tx 1 ' 1:-: 1:-:fu :-: 1929 5-:xx-zxz-:xx-:x x j fl Fe T X, 7 X 4 L 5' :S U' l C .: .I U.: l I .
