Within this short time, Alma Mater has become a symbol of achievement, a Catholic ideal! The torch of tradition, lighted by the first Little Flowerites ten years ago and nourished by the contributions of their successors who have zealously borne aloft this special her- itage, still burns steadily. Thus, as today's Little Flowerite emerges from the first decade, the glow of this torch casts its brilliance upon her, refiecting a culmination of traditions gathered through ten years. This heritage she passes on, with added glory, to the Flowerites of tomorrow. This her- itage, seen through life at Little Flower during 1949, we present in the TENTH ANNIVERSARY EDITION OF ..... However. his more intimate Philadelphians associate this name with gentleness, a scholarly intellect, sincere interest. and a Zeal- ous priestly spirit. Born in Homesville, Pennsylvania, on August lb, 1865, our Cardinal holds the distinction of being the only prelate to rule over four dioceses in succession, the only native American Cardinal to serve as a missionary Bishop on foreign soil, and the only native American to serve as Papal Legate beyond the United States. Following his ordination on Hay 31. 1890, in the Basilica of St. .lohn Lateran, Rome. the Reverend Dennis Dougherty returned to the St. Charles Seminary as professor. This thirteen-year mission was interrupted by another call to Rome. where. on june I-l, 1903, Father Dougherty became Bishop. This appointment took His Pixcellency to the Philippine lslands. where he capably fitted himself to his new role of missionary at llaro. The success of this mission proved the practicability of his creed. VVork overcomes everything! Upon the death of :Xrchbishop lfdmund I . Prendergast. Bishop Dougherty received a series of new titlesf Cardinal Archbishop and fourth Archbishop of Philadelphia. Be- ginning with this appointment on Xlay 1, 1018, and continuing to the present, his Eminence has championed a forward movement of Catholicity in America. His reorganization and augmentation of the Philadelphia Catholic school system is of especial interest. The establishment of one hundred six new parishes increased the num- ber of parish schools in Philadelphia. ln time, this step effected another necessary increase-the diocesan high schools. To meet the demands of the rising enrollment in secondary schools. diocesan high schools were constructed. Today, in Philadelphia alone, there are five diocesan high schools for boys and four for girls. The com- bined enrollment of these nine schools totals approximately 2l,UUO. Throughout his priestly career, Cardinal Dougherty has main- tained and fostered devotion to St. Therese of the Child Jesus. His was the distinguished privilege of assisting at the canonization of this saint. ln her honor, he bestowed the title of Little Flower upon our beloved school. The undying ardor of his devotion to St. Therese has won for Dennis Cardinal Dougherty the title Cardinal of the l.ittle Flower. In tribute to our zealous Prelate. we Ll -ites claim for him the title Little Flowerls Cardinalul rh- , ra ,WmJ sk W AV bymfmwnd J ..., . asf E if 1 A share in our traditions from our beginning! Fortified by the exhilarating triumphs and humbling defeats of the past, we sparked our activities with a singular tenth-anniversary spirit. Plays, musicales, proms, sports, student government, publications, debates, clubs, the junior Adoration Society--all crowd Little Flower's ever-increasing span of activi- ties. Whether before the footlights, on the court, upon a platform, or among the cheering ranks of faithful rooters-we all tugged together, tightening the link that welds us with the thousands who have worthily carried the maroon-and-white before us Our joyful acclaim rises in ever increasing volume that will keep alive forever the cherished past and pave the way for a brilliant tomorrow for the future EQ . .
