All-vital! English, that essential suhject encompassing two of the three Ars, is a part of every student's life from primary to high school days. A roster without this fundamental course would be, not only a catastrophe, but a grave error. A concrete foundation for the great work of education is furnished by our mother tongue. Upon entering high school, the student realizes the fruits of a sound English background. There, she explores the subject more deeply and thor- oughly and with full appreciation and enjoyment. There, she delves into literature, which gives her a cultural hackground that is indicative of a well-rounded education. Through an extensive reading program, she becomes acquainted with the immortal names inscrilfed in litefary history. Latin, the source of all romantic languages, stands in high esteem at Little Flower. The four-year course offers to students the opportunity of meeting Cicero, Caesar, Vergil, Ovid. German, the basic source of the English tongue, has a growing mo- mentum of interest among the lan- guage-minded students. ln addition to learning to speak, write and read German, pupils delve into the folk songs and literature of Germany. The routine grind of vocabulary and syntax drills, necessary to the mastery of any language, is moti- vated in Latin and German classes by dramatizations and plays. The Latin Club delights those present at the Latin Rally with their entertaining play vivifying Greek mythology. Explaining a map of Der Deutschland, Sister Juventia, M.S.C., commands the interested attention of her students. These girls are eager to hear about the country whose language they are learning to speak, read, and write. IN MEMORIAM Sister Mary Celestis, M.S.C., a member of the original faculty at Little Flower, was called before the throne of God on january 17, 1947. However, her memory lingers in the school wherein she unselfishly gave eight years of her time and energy. For six years, she molded hearts and minds to God through the teaching of religiong for the last two years, she helped students acquire fluency in German. Her missionary zeal will long live in the hearts and minds of the students she taught so well and counseled so wisely. lA GUAGI CHllUW lfllmrvj Fourth year Latin students assemble in an in- formal class period to enjoy poetry selections from Vergil and Ovid. KCirclej There are jokes in Spanish, too-so discover these students of third-year Spanish. Literally, they are applying Sister Mary Dennis's suggestion, We have learned the principles of Spanish, now, let us enjoy it. Two words that have taken on magnanimous meaning in the world today are Intermltionzll Rela- tions. They spell the attitude existing between and among the nations of the earth. It is vitally impor- tant that the future adults of America understand the people and customs of these foreign nations. There is no surer way to a country's heart than through her language. Thus, our departments of French and Spanish answer this challenge by aiming, through the teaching of these languages, to bring the students to understand these romantic peoples and their social background. As a result, we students realize that France, Spain, and the Southern Repub- lics are not just far-away countries but truly our neighbors-real people who are as eager to know about us as we are to learn about them. YVe are thus becoming better ht to take our proper place in this era of expanding in- ternationalism, an era in which the Catholic press, through all languages, has a gigantic task to exe- cute - to bring the world back to Christ! fLeftj The Sisters of St. Joseph pilot us to the alluring countries of France, Spain, and South America via the S. Now, however, they are mas- ter craftsmen in homemaking. Younger editions of these alumnae attended, with their mothers, the baby party sponsored by the home economics depart- ment to celebrate the eighth birthday of our school. YVith enthusiasm, the home economics classes prepared artistic decorations and delightful refresh- ments, all of which was enjoyed by these ex-students and their tiny tots. It is no uncommon sight to sec a semicircle of teenagers bowed in prayer before her. However, the month of May is hailed by Little Flowerites as the time for honor- ing Mary in a special way-as our Queen, to whom we offer a special tribute in the form of a spiritual lfouquet. The May Procession bestows special glorification on our suppliant Queen and Mother as girlish voices are raised in hymns of praise and entreaty. Our crowne'r, surrounded by her court, approaches the celestial Queen and places a floral crown upon her brow. Qur Lady must smile in pleasure as she gathers the prayer flowers from her three thousand Little Marys, who gather around her shrine. 54.5 is ' W.. ,-,QW K' 5 I f,.H,Xa,s 2 '22 S E. Wife have a sound education, a cultural background, a thorough knowledge of the principles of our valiant press predecessors, and a firm faith in God, our Creator! With deep-rooted pride and staunch loyalty, we turn in gratitude to Little Flower, wherein we have learned the requisites necessary for following the road of Catholi- cism ourselves and for leading others to that road. We have, indeed. a real concept of the duties that lie before us. The walks of life are varied but not the way of life. We. the Catholic women of our generation, go forth to inject into the professions of our choice the tradition of Catholic ideals. Catholic viewpoint, and Cath- olic love for Him Whose love has captured men, converted nations, and revolutionized continents. Wle, tomorrow's press propagators, accept the treasured heritage of the Catholic Press with the deter- mination that through us it will continue to illuminate the uni- verse with the glory of its brilliant and undying flame of Truth! ,. ,W :LM , ,,.
