St Therese of the Child jesus and of the Holy Face, Patroness of our school northeast section of our city there was chosen for this lilllldlllg a plot opposite Hunting Park from Lycoming to Luzerne Streets hetween Tenth and Twelfth Streets This ultra modern Little Flower Catholic H1gh School for Girls sponsored hy our Cardinal and dedlcated to the Little Flower St Therese became a reality and marked a new apex in the progress of the Catholic School System of the United States I Patroness 1n her g1rlhood innocence symbolizes the fulfillment of the aims of the Catholic high chool girls On October 5 1918 ground was broken and the first step was taken in the construction of the building This huilding was designed to take care of the Catholic From late 1938 when the work was begun untll the 1mportant ceremony of thc cornerstone laying which took place in May of 1939 great progre s was made Since this was to be a very modern high school no efforts were spared 1n planning and equipping the huilding attractive in its entire liyout from thc iron fence enclosing 1tS soft green lawn to the missivc edifice of red hrick with w8v windows It is a Fitting memorial to His Eminence and a constant reminder to Philadelphia Cathohcs that our Holy Mother Church keeps a protecting arm around her children 1 . . 3 ' , . , Q l . 1 i i V , ts , . . . 7 . . . . FIRST HTIITHTS UT LITTLE TLUTUEH ' x bl ACIOUS lwuilding, wellfconstructed and modern from the cornerstone to its metal cross thus stood The Catholic Girls' High School of Philadelphia. later known as the john VJ. Hallahan Catholic Girls' High School. ln 1912 this upftof date edifice marked the hcginning ol' something new in the parochial school system .1 diocesan girls' high school. The undertaking and successful completion of many enterprises hy the faculty composed of live teaching communities proved how mutually henelicial was this composite plan. Within the next few years. the enrollment in our parish schools was greatly augmented, and the need arose for another diocesan girls' high school. Consequently, in 1927, the imposing West Philadelphia Catholic Girls' High was opened. Vwfhen the dedication ceremony took place, another great milestone had heen reached in the development of the Catholic School System. As the Philadelphia area and population increased, our grade schools multiplied. With propitious foresight our heloved Archhishop--Dennis Cardinal Dougherty envisioned the necessity for a third Catholic girls' high. To accommodate pupils in the
